“This positive association for both partners is unquestionably the most widespread and important form of ‘mutualistic symbiosis’ in terrestrial ecosystems.”
Carteron has a Ph.D. in biology from Université de Montréal and is currently working as a post-doctoral researcher in the Department of Environmental Science and Policy at the University of Milan, Italy.
In botany, mycorrhizal fungi have long been known to provide plants with significant nutritional benefits by extending their root systems up to 10 times the initial root surface and enabling them to better absorb water and minerals from the soil. For instance, mycorrhizal fungi are able to dissolve phosphorus in the soil, making it available to plants. In return, the plant provides the fungi with sugar produced through photosynthesis.
“For some time now, there has been growing interest in the important role of mycorrhizal fungi in plant biodiversity,” said the supervisor of the study, Etienne Laliberté, Canada Research Chair in Plant Functional Biodiversity at Université de Montréal.
Two strategies for fungi
The two main types of mycorrhizas, ectomycorrhizas and arbuscular mycorrhizas, seem to influence the diversity of tree species in forests in different ways.
Ectomycorrhiza affects about 2 per cent of plant species, mostly conifers in Northern Hemisphere forests. Arbuscular mycorrhiza, the oldest and most widespread form of symbiotic association between fungi and plants, affects 80 per cent of terrestrial plants. The two differ in the way the fungus attaches to the plant’s roots.
Scientists have observed that forests with soils colonized by arbuscular mycorrhiza are more diverse. Species-rich tropical rainforests, for instance, are composed mainly of arbuscular mycorrhizal trees, while species-poor boreal forests are dominated by ectomycorrhizal trees.
For this reason, researchers believed that arbuscular mycorrhiza promotes coexistence and diversity of plant species, while ectomycorrhiza promotes the dominance of one or only a few species.
Experimental studies of saplings and large-scale observations in different terrestrial biomes (geographical areas that share a similar climate, fauna and flora) also appeared to support this hypothesis. It is challenged, however, by the new study.
More than 80,000 forest plots analyzed
Forest trees interact with each other and with mycorrhizal fungi at a very localized level (within a few meters) over periods of several decades. Carteron and Laliberté therefore had to test the hypothesis on forest plots (i.e. an area of a few hundred square metres) in a multitude of forests to determine whether the results could be generalized.
“We analyzed about 82,000 forest plots across the United States and concluded that plots that were very strongly dominated by either ectomycorrhiza or arbuscular mycorrhiza had lower tree diversity,” explained Carteron. “Surprisingly, it was the forests with a mix of both mycorrhizal strategies that had a greater number of tree species. So our results indicate that dominance of any one mycorrhiza, regardless of its type, appears to decrease forest tree diversity.”
Can mycorrhizas help fight climate change?
While mycorrhizal dominance can be determined at several scales, such as the root system, forest plot and biome, this study underscores the importance of considering the impact of mycorrhiza on ecological processes at the forest plot level. At this scale, the study shows, the coexistence of mycorrhizal strategies can promote plant diversity.
“Sometimes forests with a mixture of mycorrhizal strategies are overlooked by biologists because they’re considered less abundant,” the researchers noted. “However, our study has shown that this is not always the case and these mixed types could, in fact, make up a large part of the world’s forests.”
Such forests may represent a crucial avenue for forest research and management targeting greater ecosystem services: “Combating and adapting to climate change is a good example of the services an ecosystem can provide, because a thriving forest with high tree diversity constitutes a reservoir favourable to climate balance,” Carteron pointed out.

1. He’s from Colorado
He was born in Colorado, and he lived there for a long time. His mother is an American, but his father in English. We don’t know how or when the couple met, but they did – and then they had their son. He’s an American citizen.
2. He’s Still Young
He’s a 90s baby, but he didn’t live long enough in the 90s to really reap the benefits of growing up in one of the simplest, greatest, and most fun decades. He was born on October 25, 1996. He didn’t get to grow up without social media, even though it wasn’t prevalent until he was in his teens. What a lost generation that is.
3. He Was Homeschooled
Most of his life was spent at home with his family. He and his younger brother, Cade, were homeschool students. We assume one of his parents taught them, which is a huge commitment. Ask any 2020 school-age parent about that kind of commitment and they will tell you all about it!
4. He’s Always Been Into the Arts
From the time he was a child, he’s shown an aptitude and a great interest in the arts. He’s always had had an interest in photography, dance, acting, music, and anything that allows him to show off his talents and his creativity. We can see now that he’s probably always wanted to go into this line of work.
5. He Was In an Award-Winning Play
His first acting role came at the age of 11. He was cast in a performance in Denver. After that, he was cast in a Broadway musical. Maybe you’ve heard of it? It’s called “Billy Elliot,” and it went on to win a Tony for the Best Musical. That was in 2008. His family knew then and there that their son would do something special.
6. His Family Downsized for Him
His family made a big decision following his Broadway debut. They sold their home in the Denver suburbs and moved to New York City. Everyone knows that the cost of living in NYC is high, and his family sacrificed significantly for him. They moved into an apartment that sat atop a pub and a restaurant, and it had only 500-square-feet. My pool deck is three times larger than the entire apartment was.
7. His Family Loved New York
Despite living in a closet as a family of four, they loved the city. Keean was able to spend his evenings performing on Broadway (he did more than 300 shows!) while his family was there to support him. He and everyone else fell in love with the city, and we can understand why. It’s one of our favorite places.
8. He’s in LA Now
While performing in hit plays, he was noticed by a casting director by the name of Claire Simon. She felt it would be best for him and his family to leave the city behind and head to LA so he could spend his time studying acting and drama – and she encouraged him to try out his hand at auditioning for film and television roles. They did, and he did, and it all worked out.
9. He Has a New Hobby
Living in Denver and then New York City while working on Broadway doesn’t leave a lot of time or ability to do things like surf. However, now that he’s in LA, he’s learned to surf. He loves it, and that’s what he’s doing when he’s not working. He’s at the beach, in the waves, catching them as they crash into the shoreline.
10. He Keeps to Himself
There’s a real misconception that young people spend all their time on social media showing the world what they are eating and doing at every waking moment. It’s not always true. Perhaps of some, but not of this young actor. He’s spending his time keeping his very personal details to himself, and that’s a real skill.

It makes sense that people would be eager to use such scary and intriguing source material and tell a longer story across several episodes. Sometimes this doesn’t work out, as I Know What You Did Last Summer isn’t the most well-done series. But it’s always interesting to see what will be great and what will get lost in translation.
While several horror films have TV adaptations, there are just as many that haven’t been given the small screen treatment. These horror movies would make amazing TV shows and it would be cool to see how the premise and characters would translate.

There are some underrated TV shows based on horror movies and there are just as many great horror films that could be turned into TV series. The 2011 remake of 1985’s Fright Night stars the late Anton Yelchin as Charley Brewster, a teenage boy who starts worrying about his neighbor Jerry Dandrige (Colin Farrell).
The movie is definitely scary, as Jerry is a vampire, but it also has a lot of humanity to it as Charley has a love interest Amy (Imogen Poots) and a strong single mother Jane (Toni Collette). The film’s story could be slowed down to fit an entire season of TV, focusing on Charley and Jane’s dating lives along with the horror living right next door.
Unfriended is a unique horror movie and it would make for a cool TV series. The show could focus on the same story: a group of teenagers who are connected to a classmate’s dark and tragic death and who are talking online when her ghost begins stalking them.
The film is so good that it would be nice to spend more time with this fascinating story. One potential criticism of the movie is that while Blair Lily (Shelley Henning) is focused on quite a bit, the others don’t get as much explanation or backstory. Each episode could focus on how each character is tied to Laura Barns (Heather Sossaman), which would flesh each person out a bit more.
Freaky is a horror movie version of Freaky Friday as teenage girl Millie Kessler (Kathryn Newton) and serial killer the Blissfield Butcher (Vince Vaughn) swap places. It’s a hilarious and scary film that would lend itself perfectly to a TV show.
Whether the TV series featured new characters or the same ones, it could keep the same idea of having two unlikely people live each other’s lives. The story would need to be stretched across several episodes, so it would take longer for people to realize what was going on. If Freaky was a TV show, this would also allow more time for viewers to really get to know the two main characters as their likes, dislikes, and backstories could be explored more. Horror movies that are funny tend to be the best TV shows as Scream and Chucky both retain the film franchises’ sense of humor.
Horror fans love the Trick ‘r Treat monster Sam and he is so interesting to watch that’s one reason to turn this beloved horror movie into a TV show. There’s also the fact that this is an anthology film made up of a few different stories, and it would be easy to tell a different scary tale in each episode.
Trick ‘r Treat works so well because it’s set on Halloween, and a TV adaptation could definitely focus on October 31st as well since there are countless scary stories that could be told about this holiday. It would also be possible to have some fun with other holidays and have a few episodes about Christmas or Valentine’s Day.
The urban legends in the ’90s horror movie could each be their own TV episode, making Urban Legend another good choice for a movie-to-TV adaptation. The show could be an anthology with a totally separate and fresh story being told in every episode.
One season could focus on several high school students and another could keep the movie’s setting at a beautiful college campus which would provide some variety and give the show more to work with. Many of the stories told in the horror film, from “the babysitter and the man upstairs” to the disturbing “kidney heist” tale, could each be its own episode. An Urban Legends TV show could also be a slasher story and feature a killer who is also using these famous legends to hurt people and get their message across. And if the show kept the corny vibe of the movie, that would be fun, too.

Freaky is a horror movie version of Freaky Friday as teenage girl Millie Kessler (Kathryn Newton) and serial killer the Blissfield Butcher (Vince Vaughn) swap places. It’s a hilarious and scary film that would lend itself perfectly to a TV show.
Whether the TV series featured new characters or the same ones, it could keep the same idea of having two unlikely people live each other’s lives. The story would need to be stretched across several episodes, so it would take longer for people to realize what was going on. If Freaky was a TV show, this would also allow more time for viewers to really get to know the two main characters as their likes, dislikes, and backstories could be explored more. Horror movies that are funny tend to be the best TV shows as Scream and Chucky both retain the film franchises’ sense of humor.
Horror fans love the Trick ‘r Treat monster Sam and he is so interesting to watch that’s one reason to turn this beloved horror movie into a TV show. There’s also the fact that this is an anthology film made up of a few different stories, and it would be easy to tell a different scary tale in each episode.
Trick ‘r Treat works so well because it’s set on Halloween, and a TV adaptation could definitely focus on October 31st as well since there are countless scary stories that could be told about this holiday. It would also be possible to have some fun with other holidays and have a few episodes about Christmas or Valentine’s Day.
The urban legends in the ’90s horror movie could each be their own TV episode, making Urban Legend another good choice for a movie-to-TV adaptation. The show could be an anthology with a totally separate and fresh story being told in every episode.
One season could focus on several high school students and another could keep the movie’s setting at a beautiful college campus which would provide some variety and give the show more to work with. Many of the stories told in the horror film, from “the babysitter and the man upstairs” to the disturbing “kidney heist” tale, could each be its own episode. An Urban Legends TV show could also be a slasher story and feature a killer who is also using these famous legends to hurt people and get their message across. And if the show kept the corny vibe of the movie, that would be fun, too.

In diesem Beitrag zeige ich, mit welchen Winteraktivitäten abseits der Piste die Region Klewenalp-Vierwaldstättersee bei mir punkten konnte.
Wintersafari – ein Winter-Erlebnis abseits der Piste
Skifahren mit Blick auf den Vierwaldstättersee – dass man das in den beiden verbundenen Wintersportgebieten Klewenalp und Stockhütte kann, weiss ich seit einigen Jahren. Das Panorama hier oben ist grandios! Ebenfalls fantastisch ist der Einfallsreichtum der regionalen Touristiker. Die haben nämlich kurzerhand eine Safari zusammengestellt, auf der man sich auf die Spur der hiesigen «Big Five» begeben kann.
Im Fokus stehen für einmal keine Wildtiere, sondern Transportmittel. Bemerkenswert finde ich, dass die gesamte Transportkette Teil des öffentlichen Verkehrs ist. Für GA-Besitzer/-innen bedeutet dies: maximaler Spass bei minimalen Zusatzkosten. Und alle anderen können dank einem eigens dafür kreierten Rundreise-Ticket an einem Tag nahezu die gesamte Bandbreite des regionalen Personenverkehrs erleben.
Mit der Luftseilbahn aufs Sonnenplateau
Unsere Wintersafari startet in tristem Januar-Grau. Der Hochnebel sitzt an diesem Sonntagmorgen nicht nur über Zürich fest, sondern hat sich bis ins Herzen der Zentralschweiz ausgedehnt. Dementsprechend wuselig geht es an der Talstation der Luftseilbahn Beckenried-Klewenalp zu und her. Der Sonnenhunger treibt nicht nur uns in die Höhe. Auch wenn wir dies bei der Anreise via Bahnhof Altdorf insgeheim gehofft hatten – wir waren nämlich die Einzigen im Postauto von Altdorf Richtung Stans. Allzu lange müssen wir uns zum Glück trotzdem nicht gedulden, bis wir mit der Luftseilbahn die Nebelgrenze durchstossen und bald schon auf das Wolkenmeer runter schauen. Was für ein Traumtag!
5 leichtfüssige Kilometer auf dem Klewenalp-Stockhütten-Weg
Von hier folgen wir dem ausgeschilderten Winterwanderweg Richtung Stockhütte. Der bestens präparierte Weg führt nahezu steig leicht bergab und ist dementsprechend sehr angenehm und gemütlich zu gehen. Schweisstreibende Aufstiege? Fehlanzeige. Auf dem Klewenalp-Stockhütten-Weg steht der Genuss im Vordergrund. Der Winterwanderweg ist gleichzeitig als Schlittelweg ausgeschildert.
Gerade wer die Wintersafari mit Kindern unternimmt, der erhöht mit dem Mitbringen eines Schlittens den Spassfaktor. Rund um den Klewenstock erwarten euch einige lässige, kürzere Abfahrtsstrecken. Und die Kleinsten lassen sich auf dieser Runde natürlich auch warm eingepackt gut auf einen Schlitten packen. Ob mit Kindern, Hund, in trauter Zweisamkeit oder mit einer Handvoll Family & Friends – lassen wir die folgenden Bilder für sich sprechen. Winterwandergenuss vom Feinsten!
Eckdaten der Winterwanderung Klewenalp – Stockhütte
Nachfolgender Karte könnt ihr den Routenverlauf des Klewenalp-Stockhütten-Wegs entnehmen. Die Strecke weist eine Distanz von 5 Kilometer auf. Dabei geht es nur marginal bergauf (30 Höhenmeter) und mehrheitlich bergab (340 Höhenmeter). An zwei, drei Stellen verläuft der Weg parallel zur Skipiste – dies ist jeweils entsprechend markiert. Kreuzt der Winterwanderweg die Skipiste, dann ist dies auch entsprechend signalisiert. Falls euch auf halber Strecke die Puste ausgehen sollte, dann bietet sich auf Höhe Emmetten Aengi die Möglichkeit, mit dem Sessellift wieder Richtung Klewenalp umzukehren.

Mit Postauto, Standseilbahn und Schiff retour zum Ausgangspunkt
Während wir kurz nach dem Mittag nach einer Pause beim Berggasthaus StockHütte Richtung Emmetten talwärts gondeln, bewegt sich die Mehrheit der Tagesausflügler in die Gegenrichtung – hinauf aufs Sonnenplateau. Und auch wenn wir uns ausgesprochen gern gegen den Strom bewegen, sind wir doch einen kurzen Moment unschlüssig, ob wir bereits jetzt wieder in die Nebelsuppe abtauchen möchten. Doch unsere «Kühnheit» soll belohnt werden. Vorbei an der an der Talstation wartenden Schlange begeben wir uns zur Postautohaltestelle.
Mit dem Postauto geht’s nun weiter bis nach Seelisberg, Bahnhof und von dort mit der Standseilbahn hinunter nach Treib. Die Fahrt mit der Seelisberg-Treib-Bahn stand schon länger auf unserer Bucket List. Safari sei Dank ist es an diesem Tag nicht nur endlich «so weit», sondern wir geniessen die stotzige Talfahrt hinunter ans Vierwaldstättersee-Ufer exklusiv für uns allein.
Wie gesagt: es lohnt sich, Ausflüge antizyklisch zu planen – im Sommer ist hier nämlich garantiert mehr los. 4 der 5 «Big Five» haben wir nun bewältigt – ebenso die richtig tolle Winterwanderstrecke dazwischen. Für die letzte Etappe steht nun noch eine knapp 30-minütige Schifffahrt auf dem Programm. Und siehe da: Pünktlich hierfür hat sich der Nebel aufgelöst und wir kommen nochmals den Blick auf die mächtigen Mythen. Diese sind nämlich auch auf den Klewenalp-Stockhütten-Weg immer mal wieder zwischen den Tannen durch zu erspähen.
Ein toller Abschluss, eines – wie erwartet – von A bis Z abwechslungsreichen Tagesausfluges. Ich kann die Wintersafari allen empfehlen, die einen kurzweiligen und aussichtsreichen Wintertag am Vierwaldstättersee verbringen möchten. Und für mich ist die Wintersafari auch gleichzeitig eine Art «Geheimtipp» für alle, die ein GA haben. Maximaler Bahnspass bei minimalen Kosten.
Praktische Tipps für deine Wintersafari auf der Klewenalp
Das Rundreiseticket kann sowohl ab Beckenried als auch ab Brunnen gelöst werden. Erwachsene bezahlen regulär 62 CHF (ab Beckenried) bzw. 66.50 CHF (ab Brunnen). Die Tickets für Kinder Kosten 15.50 / 18:00 CHF. Das Hundeticket kostet unabhängig vom Startort 20.50 CHF. Das Halbtax ist gültig (32/34.50 CHF). Mit Juniorkarte und GA ist die Rundreise gratis. Für alle, die aus der Region Zürich mit dem öffentlichen Verkehr anreisen, würde ich als Start-/Endpunkt der Wintersafari Brunnen empfehlen.
Das Rundreiseticket kann für die Variante Beckenried-Beckenried über den Shop von Luzern Tourismus online gekauft werden (beachtet, dass das Ticket an der Talstation der Bergbahnen Klewenalp-Stockhütte jedoch umgetauscht werden muss). PERSETERUAN Vicky Prasetyo dan Kalina Oktarani kian memanas. Kalina bahkan curiga bila mantan suaminya itu berniat menjatuhkan kariernya usai cerai.
Meskipun begitu, dia sama sekali tidak takut. Pasalnya, dia juga memiliki sejumlah bukti bahwa tak pernah menelantarkan ibunya sendiri selama ini.

“Subhanallah, mas Vicky yang tanggung hidup saya sekarang. Mas Vicky memang pecicilan tapi faktanya subhanallah sama orangtua,” ujar Erlan Wardhania.
Tahu hal ini, Kalina justru berderai air mata saat mendengar tudingan ibunya sendiri. Seperti diketahui, belum lama ini Mama Een, sapaan akrabnya, menuding Kalina telah menelantarkan dirinya selama sakit.

O dia amanhecia em São Paulo, mas dentro do Hell´s Club a atmosfera era escura e enfumaçada, propícia para quem queria esticar a existência além das 5 da manhã, hora em que o after hours mais famoso do país começava a funcionar na metade dos anos 90.
Pelas mãos do DJ Mau Mau, residente da “noite”, uma faixa entrava em ação através dos toca-discos: uma batida seca, pesada e mal-humorada, como uma martelada na moleira. Não existem hihats para marcar o ritmo. Nem congas, nem baixo. Poum Poum Poum Poum Poum. Aos poucos um som de videogame Atari que tomou um banho de café funcionava como um backbeat. A coisa vai crescendo até que um som rasgado, sujo, como um grito animal alienígena, vai chegando, vai entrando, e vai tomando conta de tudo. Começa meio grave e depois vai se abrindo para um agudo epopeico, de arrancar a tampa da cabeça.
A chegada de Homework
São Paulo ouvia pela primeira vez Rollin’ & Scratching, do Daft Punk, parte do celebrado álbum de estréia da dupla, Homework.
O disco, impecável, era assunto no mundo inteiro e ovacionado pelas revistas especializadas. Apesar de bem pouco fácil de digerir, principalmente para quem ainda estava conectado ao sistema baixo, guitarra voz e bateria, surpreendeu ganhando o mundo pop de assalto, ajudados por excelentes videoclipes, que já em um álbum de estréia foram entregues a nomes como Spike Jonze e Michel Gondri.
O cuidado com os videoclipes era apenas parte de um longo cuidado conceitual que ajudou a cristalizar a mítica do Daft Punk. O duo criou personas para representar seres futuristas alienígenas tocadores de música (dá-lhe Bowie), transformou suas apresentações em espetáculos visuais eletrônicos e fugia de entrevistas e programas de TV (dá-lhe Kraftwerk) enquanto dominava o mundo. Teasers com apenas um loop da música repetido por horas foram lançados no Youtube, gerando milhões de visualizações. O ponto alto era a guitarra de ninguém menos do que Nile Rodgers, fundador e guitarrista do Chic, um dos ícones da Disco Music. Nile já havia trabalhado com nomes como Madonna, MichaelJackson, MickJagger, DavidBowie, Diana Ross e Duran Duran. O curioso é que o romance entre Niles e o Daft Punk começou 16 anos antes, quando o guitarrista contou aos dois o quanto havia gostado da música Da Funk, presente no álbum de estréia. Desde então tentaram trabalhar juntos algumas vezes sem sucesso. Get Lucky traz de volta a característica que elevou o Daft Punk ao Olimpo com Homework: a de fazer música pop sem perder a alta qualidade das composições e produções. Como parte do cuidado visual e conceitual que a dupla sempre teve, é obvio que os figurinos iam ter uma atenção bastante especial. “Without a more robust approach to the evaluation and implementation of AI, given the unabated adoption of emergent technology in clinical practice, we are failing to learn from our past mistakes in mammography,” the JAMA Health Forum editorial states. The piece, posted online Friday, was co-written with Christoph I. Lee, MD, MS, MBA, a professor of radiology at the University of Washington School of Medicine.
One of those “past mistakes in mammography,” according to the authors, was adjunct computer-aided detection (CAD) tools, which grew rapidly in popularity in the field of breast cancer screening starting more than two decades ago. CAD was approved by the FDA in 1998, and by 2016 more than 92% of U.S. imaging facilities were using the technology to interpret mammograms and hunt for tumors. But the evidence showed CAD did not improve mammography accuracy. “CAD tools are associated with increased false positive rates, leading to overdiagnosis of ductal carcinoma in situ and unnecessary diagnostic testing,” the authors wrote. Medicare stopped paying for CAD in 2018, but by then the tools had racked up more than $400 million a year in unnecessary health costs.
“The premature adoption of CAD is a premonitory symptom of the wholehearted embrace of emergent technologies prior to fully understanding their impact on patient outcomes,” Elmore and Lee wrote.
The doctors suggest several safeguards to put in place to avoid “repeating past mistakes,” including tying Medicare reimbursement to “improved patient outcomes, not just improved technical performance in artificial settings.”
