Gestational diabetes causes blood sugar levels to rise, creating risks for baby and mother alike. “As pregnancy complications continue to rise worldwide, there have been increasing efforts to study with urgency the first-trimester as a window of opportunity for early identification and prediction of GDM, and the optimal point to take action to prevent maternal disease,” said Dr. Sherin Devaskar, lead author of the study and physician-in-chief of UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital and distinguished professor of pediatrics at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.
Identifying biomarkers of GDM in early pregnancy could lead to better monitoring and development of safe and timely interventions and treatments that would reduce disease severity, thus improving long-term health prospects for mother and offspring.
For the current study, researchers focused on extracellular vesicles (EVs), circulating “communicators” that carry and deliver microRNA genes (miRNAs) within maternal blood. They are secreted from the placenta, and play a key role in pregnancy and in complications of pregnancy, including GDM. Researchers took blood samples during each trimester and at delivery from miRNA expression in EVs in 24 pregnant women and found there was distinct expression of miRNA in EVs isolated from blood samples taken in the first trimester, from women eventually diagnosed with GDM compared to those with normal healthy pregnancies. The authors noted changes in these miRNAs prior to clinical diagnosis, suggesting that they were involved in the development of the disease rather than due to factors secondary to the condition itself or treatments like insulin, which may influence miRNA content of circulating EVs.
Researchers also found upregulation in certain miRNA in first trimester pregnancies that went on to be diagnosed with GDM, further suggesting that the miRNA cargo within circulating EVs may be communicating with other maternal organs and cell types, and interacting with signaling pathways involved in metabolism and inflammation, which could be influencing the maternal metabolic adaptions observed in women who develop GDM.
“This is a promising initial step in finding a robust and accurate biomarker panel that performs much better than one single feature in predicting GDM during early pregnancy,” said Dr. Devaskar. “This study provides more evidence that GDM is a condition that begins developing far earlier than when currently clinically diagnosed, after the midpoint of pregnancy — when sadly, complications may already be irreversible. As providers of care for high risk pregnant patients and their babies, we are excited about this step towards the potential of more reliable and earlier diagnosis so that we may intervene before the development of adverse conditions for mother and baby that are often lifelong.”
The authors say further study is needed to investigate the mechanistic role of circulating EVs during pregnancy, their role in pregnancy complications and utilization of EV associated miRNAs as noninvasive predictors of disease in pregnancy, but that EV-associated miRNAs from the first trimester of pregnancy have the potential to act as an early gestation predictor of the subsequent development of GDM, prior to the emergence of characteristic clinical or biochemical features.

Gestational diabetes causes blood sugar levels to rise, creating risks for baby and mother alike. It can lead to high blood pressure, risk of future diabetes and a higher chance of c-section in the mother as well as excessive birth weight, premature delivery and other issues in her baby. Diagnosing the condition currently relies on conventional screening and lab work in the late second and third trimesters. The ability to predict the condition earlier is one key to reducing its impact.

The first Doctor Strange was a psychedelic, thoughtful affair that, while certainly having some offputting imagery, wasn’t meant to be a horror movie. The sequel, however, absolutely was. Multiverse of Madness is filled with disturbing imagery, jump scares, and gruesome kills, especially for a PG-13 movie. To fans of the director, Sam Raimithis was no surprise. However, to casual moviegoers, this was a radical change and has proven to be polarizing among fans. That being said, for those that enjoyed the horror elements, you might be searching for some more campy scares to scratch that macabre itch.

‘Evil Dead 1 and 2’
The Evil Dead is where the now accomplished director, Sam Raimi, got his start. The original Evil Dead was a surprise indie hit, celebrated by fans and critics. Despite being shot on a shoestring budget, Raimi was still able to nearly perfectly blend comedy and horror to create what is now one of the most well-known horror movies of all time. Evil Dead 2 improved upon the foundations of the original and is generally regarded as the best of the trilogy. While less scary than the original, Evil Dead 2 injected excellent slapstick comedy and some vastly improved makeup and gore effects. While the third, Army of Darkness, is undoubtedly fantastic, it can hardly be considered a horror movie.
Seeing how both Multiverse of Madness and The Evil Dead have the same director, they share more than a few similarities. All three movies feature numerous dissolves, canted camera angles, one-liners, and some shocking yet comical death scenes. The Evil Dead movies are much campier and less polished than Doctor Strange 2but they’re still a blast to watch. If you’re interested in seeing Raimi’s roots, then The Evil Dead 1 and 2 is for you.

‘Nightmare on Elm Street’
Wes Craven’s Nightmare on Elm Street is up there with some of the most popular and most successful horror movies ever made. With more than four sequels, a reimagining, a reboot, and a TV show, Freddy Krueger was everywhere in the ’80s. However, despite the volume of Nightmare content, nothing has lived up to the first movie.
Like The Evil Deada Nightmare on Elm Street is equal parts comedic and frightening. Robert Englundwho plays Krueger, does a phenomenal job of intimidating the audience while still spouting off one-liners and bad jokes. Nightmare on Elm Street and Multiverse of Madness both have dream walking, supernatural antagonists who have a flair for the dramatic. If you want to see some creative kills performed by a ludicrously entertaining antagonist, Nightmare on Elm Street is for you.
‘Brightburn’
James Gunn’sBrightburnflew under the radar upon release. Between heavy hitters such as Avengers: Endgame and highly acclaimed Oscar winners like Parasite, Brightburn was a bit of a miss in 2019. Middling box office numbers and mediocre reviews caused this superhero horror to be dead on arrival. Brightburn follows the story of a young alien who falls to earth and finds out he has extraordinary abilities (similar to Superman). However, soon after realizing these powers, he begins to go on a murderous rampage throughout his hometown.

Brightburn was a fun, if unremarkable, film in most aspects. The story was lazily written, and most characters are unlikable. However, where this movie shines is its kills. The gore makeup and blood VFX are outstanding, and most kills are very creative. If nothing else, Brightburn is worth watching for the final sequence alone. If you enjoyed seeing a fallen hero mercilessly stalk and murder everyone in her way in Multiverse of Madnessyou’d probably enjoy Brightburn.
‘Drag Me to Hell’
Drag Me to Hellshares many similarities with The Evil Dead. Seeing as how this was also directed by Sam Raimi, this is unsurprising. Drag Me to Hell was released in 2009 to decent critical and commercial success and has garnered a cult following in the years since its release. Considered by many to be a spiritual successor to The Evil Dead, Drag Me to Hell follows a young woman as she tries to free herself from a demonic curse that threatens to, as the title implies, drag her to hell.
The gore and camp were more reined in for Drag Me to Hell. Studios were worried about Raimi’s style appealing to the masses, so as a result, the film was made to be PG-13 and a bit more serious than Raimi’s previous work. As a result, Drag Me to Hell has more in common with Multiverse of Madness than The Evil Dead trilogy does. Multiverse of Madness is also PG-13 and can push the envelope for violence in the same way that Drag Me to Hell did. If you enjoyed the campy side of Multiverse of Madness but still want enough scares to satisfy you, Drag Me to Hell is for you.
‘Halloween’ (2018)
The Halloween series is one of the longest-running and most recognizable franchises in horror movie history. The original redefined the genre and introduced audiences to the terrifying Michael Myers. In 2018, Halloween was revitalized for a new generation, directed by David Gordon Green. Taking place 40 years after the original, this legacy sequel wowed critics and fans and proved itself to be a fresh new take on a dormant series.

There aren’t many similarities between Halloween (2018) and Multiverse of Madness on the surface. There’s very little comedy in Halloween, and there are no big action setpieces. However, what both movies do incredibly well is create a sense of being stalked. Both Michael and Wanda are constantly moving, and both are unstoppable forces of nature. If you liked the inclement dread present in Multiverse of Madness, Halloween (2018) is for you.
‘Malignant’

Malignant is a recent release, premiering on HBO Max and in theaters on September 10th, 2021. Directed by James Wan, Malignant follows the story of a young woman who is plagued with visions of a serial killer murdering his victims. Critics seemed to like it, and fans of Wan loved it. Malignant harkened back to thrillers of the ‘70s, drawing heavy inspiration from Giallo films.
Like Multiverse of Madness, Malignant was goofy, bloody, and a lot of fun. Both movies feel incredibly unique and representative of their directors. Malignant is technically rooted in science rather than dark magic, but that doesn’t detract from the madness in the slightest. Malignant is an excellent campy horror movie for the modern-day, as it succeeds in being brutal without taking itself seriously. If you enjoyed the cheesy gore of Multiverse of Madness, Malignant is for you.
‘House’
Putting it bluntly, House is totally off-the-rails. Released in September of 1977, House is a Japanese comedy-horror about a girl and her friends going to her aunt’s house. House was directed by Nobuhiko Obayashi for an astonishingly low budget. To the studio’s surprise, it was a massive hit in Japan and is now considered a classic by both horror aficionados and film fans.
House features abstract imagery, nonsensical story beats, and hauntingly strange VFX. While Multiverse of Madness is nowhere near close to topping Housethe two do share similarities. House embraced its absurdity and ran with it, and Multiverse of Madness does the same. Equal parts funny and disturbing, both films focus on the visuals and the emotion of a scene rather than telling an airtight narrative. If you liked the wild visuals and the looser story threads of Multiverse of Madnessthis film is for you.

The findings, published May 26 in JAMA Network Open, highlight the need to better manage antibiotic use outside hospital settings.
“Inappropriate prescribing of antibiotics is unfortunately very common and leads to adverse drug events and millions of dollars in avoidable health-care costs,” said lead author Anne Mobley Butler, PhD, an assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Washington University. “Sometimes parents think that the worst that could happen is that the antibiotic just won’t help their child. But antibiotics are not harmless — they can cause adverse drug events. Clinicians needs to insure that antibiotics are only used in the way that is most likely to benefit the patient.”
Antibiotics kill bacteria, not viruses, but doctors still frequently prescribe antibiotics for viral infections. For bacterial infections, antibiotics can be helpful, but it is important to choose an appropriate antibiotic agent, and doctors do not always follow guideline recommendations. A previous study suggests that about 29% of antibiotic prescriptions for nonhospitalized children nationwide are inappropriate.
On a population level, antibiotic use drives the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Such bacteria cause difficult-to-treat infections that lead to 35,000 deaths in the U.S. each year. But less is known about the individual health risks and economic costs associated with inappropriate antibiotic use.
The researchers analyzed private health insurance claims data for children ages 6 months to 17 years who were diagnosed with any of eight common infections — three bacterial (ear infections with pus, sore throats and sinus infections) and five viral (ear infections without pus, bronchitis, bronchiolitis, influenza and colds). In total, they identified 2.8 million children who were seen for such infections in clinics, emergency rooms, urgent care centers and doctors’ offices at some point from April 1, 2016 to Sept. 30, 2018.
Unnecessary and inappropriate antibiotic prescriptions increased the chance that children would experience certain medical complications. Children who received a non-recommended antibiotic for bacterial infections experienced three to eight times higher risk of developing Clostridiodes difficile (C. diff) infection, a potentially life-threatening intestinal infection with diarrhea and inflammation that is associated with disruptions to the community of helpful bacteria that normally live in the gut. They were also at elevated risk of developing diarrhea not caused by C. diff; nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain; and serious allergic reactions such as anaphylaxis. For some viral infections, children who unnecessarily received antibiotics had higher risk of developing skin rashes or unspecified allergies compared to children who appropriately did not receive an antibiotic.
“Taking antibiotics when they’re not needed, or taking the wrong antibiotic when one is needed, accelerates the threat of dangerous superbugs, and has serious consequences for individual patients,” said David Hyun, MD, who directs The Pew Charitable Trusts’ antibiotic resistance project and is a co-author of the study. “We hope this research will serve as a roadmap to help health systems, insurers and other health care organizations as they work to strengthen efforts to improve antibiotic prescribing, protect children’s health and save money.”
Apart from causing avoidable misery, inappropriate antibiotics are expensive because they lead to antibiotic treatment failures and additional medical complications that require follow-up health-care visits and prescriptions. In 2017, inappropriate antibiotic selection for bacterial ear infections cost families and insurance companies an average of $56 per case, which comes out to $25.3 million in excess health-care costs nationally, just for children with private insurance. The total cost for all children is likely much larger. Inappropriately treated sore throats amounted to $21.3 million, sinus infections $7.1 million, influenza $1.6 million, and common colds $19.1 million nationally among children with private insurance. Unnecessary antibiotic prescriptions for viral bronchitis or bronchiolitis did not lead to either additional medical complications or excess costs.
Remarkably, inappropriate prescriptions for viral ear infections actually saved $96 per case, for a reduction of $15.4 million nationally for health-care costs for children with private health insurance. The researchers suspect that this may be at least partly due to errors in diagnostic coding, in which some bacterial ear infections were wrongly classified as viral ear infections. In other words, the benefit seen in this study may be due to correctly prescribing antibiotics for mislabeled bacterial ear infections rather than incorrectly treating viral ear infections.
Many hospitals have established so-called antibiotic stewardship programs to promote the appropriate use of antibiotics and thereby reduce the spread of antibiotic resistance, decrease the number of infections caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria and improve patient outcomes. Such programs are less common in outpatient settings such as urgent care centers and doctors’ offices.
“This study continues to show that we have to do a better job of making sure antibiotics are used appropriately in all health-care settings,” said senior author Jason Newland, MD, a Washington University professor of pediatrics in the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases. “Our failure to do so has real costs, both to the health of children and to our collective wallet. Hope you’ve already got to know our new challenge – Three Steps to Summer! Thanks to it, we will prepare for summer and take care of ourselves, not only in the context of the figure. I have prepared three elements for you, i.e. the title steps that will allow us to take care of our activity, diet and care, and thus develop good habits that will serve us even after summer is over. Are you ready? I do! So here we go with the steps – in this text I will focus primarily on the third one!
Step 1: Physical Activity
You know, I couldn’t start with anything else. Briefly – for three weeks, 5 times a week, we see each other at training LIVEs, and then in my application, where you will find a detailed training plan for the 3 weeks of the challenge. We train regularly! They are not only about achieving our goals, but also about making physical activity an integral part of our day. What is the most important thing? Regularity. At least 20-30 minutes a day!
Exercise serves us to strengthen the body – but not only. It cannot be overestimated how regular physical activity improves our mood! Thanks to it, we reduce the risk of low mood states and improve it in general. Exercise also helps to reduce the level of stress that so often accompanies us every day.

Step 2: Diet
If this word scares you, I reassure you. These three weeks are intended to teach us that a healthy diet is not only important, but also fully achievable without much sacrifice. And with it – better well-being and more energy, which we gain by providing the body with the necessary nutrients in the right doses.
We will learn what is healthy, balanced eatingbut at the same time we will treat ourselves to it sugar detox. For the duration of the challenge, we will try to put aside unhealthy snacks full of refined sugar, beverages sweetened with it and stop sweetening coffee and tea with it. Additionally we will learn the basics of proper supplementation – because it is often the case that even despite a healthy diet, we lack something in the body (I’m looking at you, vitamin D). There is nothing wrong with the correct, balanced supplementation of minerals and vitamins! Finally, we will reinforce the habit I repeat like a mantra because it is so incredibly important – irrigation. We need water not only for survival, but also for a healthy, full life! We feel water shortages in every possible way, our condition, well-being, concentration, skin, hair, nails, but also the immune, digestive and blood systems suffer from them. We lose our strength without water, which is why fluid replenishment is crucial!

Step 3: Care
Now we come to the step I want to focus on the most today. You know – warm months are approaching, i.e. the season for shorts, dresses, short sleeves, and finally also for swimsuits. Wouldn’t it be good to enjoy firm and smooth skin to match the set with a great frame of mind and a dream figure? 🙂
This is why body care rituals will be among the habits we will work on. I got you used to the fact that we usually pay the most attention to the face, but not this time! If we want to feel as beautiful as possible in our skin, we have to take care of it! I already tell you how to do this.
We start in the morning, of course. Those of us who like morning showers (but also those “evening” ones!) Should definitely reach for a shower gel (RE)START, BABYwhich contains a large dose of probiotics. It not only perfectly cleanses the skin and refreshes us with the scent of citrus, but also “feeds” the naturally occurring beneficial bacteria on the skin. The proper microflora of the skin is its first shield against harmful microorganisms, it allows it to maintain its balance and strengthens it. In addition, the gel moisturizes the skin and brings it wonderful relief!
After showering, we must not forget about the balm, which will additionally protect the skin, strengthen it and nourish it. While there are plenty of horror movies that are set during the summer months, there are also some scary films that have a summertime feeling of spending time outside, having fun, and thinking that anything could happen. Of course, in these movies, what does end up happening is terrifying and dangerous.

Scream fans love the Woodsboro setting, and the fact that the movie is set in a small California town makes it great viewing in the summertime. But while it’s a smart film with some big themes, it also has a fun summer vibe as the main characters are trying to have an enjoyable summer. But their peaceful hang-outs become scary as they get deeper into the mystery of Mackey.
While Fantasy Island is a Blumhouse horror movie that fell flat, it does work as a summer movie, as long as audiences ignore the confusing plot points and lack of character development. It’s not the scariest film ever or the most interesting, but it does have a very cool atmosphere, which makes it work in the summer.
The setting works well when the weather heats up outside, as the characters arrive in this beautiful location and wonder if their dreams really can come true here. If audiences ignore the scary events happening, the resort on the island does feel like the perfect, idyllic vacation spot, and it’s easy to want to stay here (minus the fact that the main characters start fighting for their lives, of course).

A lot of distributors have voiced their commitments to theatrical, but few have put their money where their mouth is in the same way as IFC Films president Arianna Bocco.
The executive is helping to save a century-old movie theater (Jack Nicholson was an usher!) in Bradley Beach, New Jersey, where Bocco relocated to from New York City during the coronavirus pandemic.
Bocco banded together with a group of people, including New Jersey native actor Patrick Wilson, who were interested in reviving the space. The group of investors purchased the building and are in the middle of fundraising for renovations, with plans on reopening it as a three-screen, first-run movie theater known as The Bradley.
As for her day job, Bocco has helped oversee increased buying at the indie distributor, which picked up seven titles out of both this year’s Sundance Film Festival and SXSW, including Thandiwe Newton starrer God’s Country and comedy Spin Me Round, fronted by Aubrey Plaza and Alison Brie.
Ahead of Cannes, Bocco talked to THR about running IFC Films, the shifting sentiment around day-and-date releases and acquiring titles with such AMC Networks sister companies as Shudder, RLJE and AMC+.
Do you think Zoom dealmaking is here to stay? We got used to an efficiency of doing the market meetings on Zoom, but what I really missed was the in-person [element]. It’s the same concept with going to see a movie in a theater, which was also a part of Cannes, albeit with no air conditioning, which is really hard, but you cannot replace the in-person, face-to-face meeting. It was just really going to Cannes last year that reinforced that not only do I think it will come back, but it will come back in force.
Did COVID change your strategy in what you bought? COVID did shape our strategy in multiple ways. Part of it is what we bought because of how it performed better on a strategy that pivoted to digital. And part of it was also what was available in the marketplace, and a lot of what got made during COVID was genre films. They are more contained, and they are not super expensive in general to make. Our company strategy also changed during COVID in how we were going out buying. Now, I look at strong divisions, like Shudder and like RLJE, which enable us to use our collective buying power in the market versus operating as separates, working against each other.
How do you decide when to partner with RLJE or Shudder on an acquisition? [Shudder] has a very specific audience base. They have a very clear idea of the kinds of movies that they are acquiring that fit their audience best. In years past, we overlapped in that space, frequently. Now, it’s more beneficial to lift both of our brands to do what we do best, which is to position the film and the filmmaker from a marketing PR standpoint in the theatrical window and to create an awareness for the film and then to partner with Shudder on the first pay window. So, when it gets to them, we have created this awareness for the film. We’ve worked together on marketing materials and PR to really ensure that it’s worked for both of our platforms and both of our windows
How has it been to see the major studios in the pandemic shift more regularly to day-and-date? I read recently that (former WarnerMedia CEO) Jason Kilar had said that they invented day-and-date. They started it. My friends at Magnolia and even Tom Quinn who started at Radius, we all kind of laugh because we have 15 years of experience of doing films day-and-date. I think it’s amazing that the industry has finally shifted to where we knew it was always going to be going. Once that wall with exhibition crumbled a little bit in terms of the windowing, it really opened up a door for larger companies and studios to experiment with something that we already knew. Which is that you’re not losing your audience but you are using dual streams to boost your audience — to get more out of your marketing dollars. When we started day-and-date 15 years ago, I remember people saying, “You’re killing cinema. How can you do this?” We always took the approach that our goal was to get as many people to see a film. We cannot release movies in the same way we did 20 years ago. Audiences have changed. Generations are different. Teenagers now are going to have different habits as adults than we did when we were that age.
How vital is theatrical to your business model? It is still very vital. It is still the way that we can really get our press and our publicity and our marketing out there. And you can never place that magical in-person experience of seeing a film in a dark theater. Once we, as distributors, are able to make sure that we’re giving audiences the best experience, they will keep coming back. It’s still the cheapest form of entertainment. In terms of going out for a night for entertainment, it really is. I just don’t see that kind of experience going away anytime soon.
Do you think the art house theatrical market is fundamentally changed after the pandemic? It’s fundamentally changed, but I’m not sure that’s a negative thing yet. There’s a certain aspect of the audience that we have lost for sure, probably the older art house audience. But I think what we’re seeing is that younger audiences are engaging more than they have. It’s a bit of a trade-off and that could potentially shape what is being acquired and what is being put into theaters. If younger audiences are coming to the theaters then, as distributors, our job is to cultivate that audience and to engage with that audience. [But also] not to leave out our core art house audience of older art house goers — to make sure that they’re getting films that they are engaging with. But trying to get them back? I’m not so sure. The general feeling is we have lost a certain percentage of that audience.
Filmmakers have been jerked around a lot in the pandemic and after when it has come to distribution. What do you tell filmmakers who may feel disheartened by the current distribution process? I felt for so many filmmakers, how they never got to have a festival experience or their film got sold to another company. We tried to be very, very transparent with our filmmakers. I would say, you know, to filmmakers to try to have a really amazing support system in who’s guiding you through these processes and for transparency. But also try to understand the marketplace and not just sort of the first 30 days, but what’s the whole picture. What is the life of the film looking like?
The big streamers are picking up packages earlier, leaving smaller films at the market.Have you been noticing this trend? We have noticed it and we have also been participating in it. We are getting involved at earlier stages, in pre-buy script packages. Competitively, it became a necessity. Our film slate for the year used to be 95 percent acquired on the open market. It’s harder and harder to do that nowadays when you have people like Netflix or Amazon who we can’t compete with in an open market on a finished film, but we can, when we get in at earlier stages. It’s easier when those conversations start earlier. COVID stopped production, so there was less to buy, and it forced us into a place where we had to. The market wasn’t offering up finished films.
In the pandemic, you have started work on reopening an old movie theater in a small town in New Jersey. How did that happen? This happened in very beginning in 2020. I have a beach house in this town, and in March of 2020, when everything was shut down, I just decided to move there. It’s a very small town in New Jersey, and I found myself loving it. I heard that the movie theater, which is a hundred-year-old movie theater, it started as a Vaudeville theater, and Jack Nicholson was an usher there. I heard that an evangelical church put an offer on it and my heart broke because it is a part of our main street, and it created a culture in the area. So, I just called the mayor and I said, “How can I help?” And that was it. I was done for. [Laughs]
