The month of May is here and that means streaming subscribers are in for a big month filled with new entertainment to enjoy. Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu, Peacock, Paramount+, and Prime Video are all preparing for a horde of new movies and TV shows over the course of May. Whether you’re into popular action movies from years past or you get excited about buzzy new original shows, there’s something to look forward to next month.
Disney+ has a few titles worth marking the calendar for in May. The month will kick off with the finale of Moon Knight, the acclaimed new Marvel series, on May 4th. Later in the month, the new Chip and Dale: Rescue Rangers movie will debut exclusively on the service, followed by the premiere of the highly anticipated Star Wars series Obi-Wan Kenobi.
May 27th might be the single biggest day for streaming we’ve seen in quite a long time. The first two episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi debut on Disney+, while the first half of Stranger Things Season 4 are released on Netflix. Two of the most talked-about new shows of the entire year are arriving on the same day.

The month of May is here and that means streaming subscribers are in for a big month filled with new entertainment to enjoy. Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu, Peacock, Paramount+, and Prime Video are all preparing for a horde of new movies and TV shows over the course of May. Whether you’re into popular action movies from years past or you get excited about buzzy new original shows, there’s something to look forward to next month.
Disney+ has a few titles worth marking the calendar for in May. The month will kick off with the finale of Moon Knight, the acclaimed new Marvel series, on May 4th. Later in the month, the new Chip and Dale: Rescue Rangers movie will debut exclusively on the service, followed by the premiere of the highly anticipated Star Wars series Obi-Wan Kenobi.
May 27th might be the single biggest day for streaming we’ve seen in quite a long time. The first two episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi debut on Disney+, while the first half of Stranger Things Season 4 are released on Netflix. Two of the most talked-about new shows of the entire year are arriving on the same day.

While the film does have plenty of edgy humor, it isn’t without it’s moments of chills and suspense and offers up some truly inventive special effects and gore in the process. At a brisk 90 minutes, Re-Animator is an uncomprimising, hilarious, yet orignal dose of body horror that both delights and disturbs in equal measure.
3 The Fly

A list of the finest body horror has to offer couldn’t possibly not include the mastero of the genre, director David Cronenberg. While he has many films that could easily land on this list, his 1986 remake of The Fly feels the most appropriate, somehow simultaneously his most mainstream and perhaps his most icky. The film tells the tragic story of Seth Brundle (Jeff Goldblum) who suffers freak accident involving an experiment and begins to slowly morph into a human-fly hybrid.
The film’s visual effects are notiably grotesque, but Cronenberg also utilizes the body horror aspect for geuine emotion as well. The way he depicts Goldblum’s character transformation slowly adds to the tragedy and suspense, so while The Fly delivers plenty of the gore and thrills fans look for in the genre, its mature storytelling and affecting performances elevate it to masterpiece status. The Fly proves that body horror can be equally adept at pulling the heartstrings as it is at turning our stomachs. Since then, it’s continued to be critically acclaimed and has joined the ranks of other great, award-winning horror films.

The 1956 film offers a chilling commentary on McCathisim while also being an intelligent and crafty thriller that expertly plays off of paranoia.

This week on Shudder, the horror-centric subscription streaming service available through Amazon Prime, the fourth episode (of a five-episode second season) of Cursed Films drops. The episode covers Wes Craven’s 1988 voodoo horror film The Serpent and the Rainbow, and deals with, among other strange occurrences during the filming, the fact that the screenwriter Richard Maxwell at one point believed that he had been possessed by some kind of Haitian demon, and had to leave the production. But crucially, what the show – directed, edited, and written by Jay Cheel – doesn’t do is pretend that Maxwell actually was possessed. What it does do, in this and all other episodes from both seasons, is explore how strange yet explicable occurrences — and occasionally horrible tragedies — can plague the making of certain films, and how these can cause myths to arise around them, and subsequently perpetuate a kind of mystical, conspiratorial form of critical thinking.
The first season of Cursed Films, which aired on Shudder in 2020 right at the beginning of the COVID pandemic, was heavily focused on “cursed” horror movies. That season covered The Exorcist, The Omen, Poltergeist, The Crow, and Twilight Zone: The Movie. As Cheel explained in an episode of Film Junk, the highly idiosyncratic film podcast he co-hosts with Sean Dwyer and Frank Knezic, there was an intended arc to the order of these episodes that was rearranged due to Shudder having streaming rights to The Exorcist, but nevertheless the philosophy of the show couldn’t have been clearer from the beginning. The title Cursed Films seems to have thrown some people off, believing that it took the idea of curses seriously, but all you have to do to figure out where Cheel is coming from is watch the Poltergeist episode. This remains my favorite of the two seasons, and details the belief the film was hexed due to, among other reasons, the tragic early deaths of Heather O’Rourke and Dominique Dunne. One reason some claim Poltergeist was cursed is that in the famous climactic scene featuring JoBeth Williams’s panicked swim amongst a pool full of skeletons, those skeletons were real, not models (not an unusual practice), thereby bringing the wrath of, I suppose, the dead down upon the film. O’Rourke died of a rare disease, and Dunne was murdered by a stalker. In the episode, regarding these sad deaths, Craig Reardon, one of the film’s special make-up effects artists, says “The idea of having a few [real skeletons] on the set of Poltergeist and killing two lovely young girls is a pretty pernicious idea. It’s an insult to the memory of a very sweet little girl, Heather O’Rourke, and it’s worse than that: Dominique Dunne was strangled to death by her boyfriend, which had fuck-all to do with a skeleton.”
In season two, it would appear that, given the success of season one, Shudder has allowed Cheel to branch out, and cover films outside of the horror genre. While horror is still represented here – an episode about Rosemary’s Baby has already aired, and the last episode will take a look at the, to me, inexcusable Cannibal Holocaust – we also get explorations of The Wizard of Oz and Andrei Tarkovsky’s Stalker. These last two are my favorites of the season thus far. Cheel has a particular sense of humor which he injects into the episodes on occasion (there’s a cut to a City Slickers poster in season one that killed me), and in the one about The Wizard of Oz he brings in comedian Gregg Turkington, playing the character of “Gregg Turkington” made famous on the web series On Cinema at the Cinema that he hosts with Tim Heidecker. On that show, Turkington’s version of himself is a clueless cinephile, a gullible film expert, who knows far less than he thinks he does and has shit taste. On this episode of Cursed Films, he shows up to praise the much-reviled Under the Rainbow, the 1981 Chevy Chase comedy that attempted to keep alive the legend that the actors who played the Munchkins in Victor Fleming’s 1939 classic went wild in their hotel during production. This, among many other myths surrounding Oz, are debunked throughout the episode, except by Turkington. The choice to bring in Turkington has apparently baffled some, to the extent that they think Cheel believed Turkington was on the level. But of course the assumption is that the viewer will get the joke, and understand that Turkington represents everyone who has bolstered this kind of nonsense for the past several decades.
The Oz episode ends with a long section about Judy Garland and her life and career after that film. There is, of course, a lot of sadness in that story, and Cheel unfolds it with great sensitivity. Being able to include this and the Turkington section in one 40ish minute episode, and make it all work, is perhaps his greatest gift. But he also knows when to step away from that kind of ironic juxtaposition. The best episode of season two, so far, is the one about Stalker, a film that, as anyone who’s seen it knows, has a connection to The Wizard of Oz. In this episode, Cheel deftly describes the making of the film, the near un-making of it, and the terrible circumstances which may have led to the early deaths of Tarkovsky and two of the film’s lead actors. Yet it’s also a tribute to a cinema classic, a one of a kind science-fiction masterpiece. The stories told throughout both seasons of Cursed Films are often tragic, even, at times, infuriating. But they are also illuminating, human, and humane.

If you are a Disney fan, then you are in luck, because the company just dropped some news about their upcoming plans for Halloween at Disneyland.
The first major announcement is that Oogie Boogie Bash – A Disney Halloween Party is back. This after hours event at Disneyland lets you party with one of the scariest Disney characters, Oogie Boogie from The Nightmare Before Christmas, and some other fan favorite Disney icons dressed up for the haunting occasion on select nights in 2022. On that same costume front, Disney also showed off what Mickey and Minnie will be wearing at the park during Halloween. Both are rocking adorable homemade costumes, with Mickey being an adorable pumpkin, while Minnie is a purple cat.

Also, if you wish you could have some Halloween fun at Disneyland right now, there are various different treats to warm your cobweb filled heart. From now until May 4, California Churro is offering a spooky churro — rolled in cinnamon sugar, cut in half, drizzled with peanut butter and chocolate sauce, and topped with orange, yellow and brown peanut butter candy pieces. This is a mouth watering treat fit for a Disney Halloween king, and will be sure to have you bounce around the park like you’re Jack Skellington discovering Christmas for the first time. On top of that, now through May 1, Blue Ribbon Corn Dogs is also celebrating with a very orange cheddar pickle dog.

Finally, the last announcement was made by Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness actress Xochitl Gomez. She revealed via video that her new character America Chavez is coming soon to Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure. Disney admitted that this was not necessarily a Halloween announcement, but it can be argued that superheroes are just as synonymous with the holiday as Freddy Krueger or Michael Myers. Also, Multiverse of Madness has been described as the MCU’s first horror movie with “jump scare moments” and haunting imagery. Because of that, Chavez’s inclusion in this announcement is actually quite fitting.

Finally, the last announcement was made by Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness actress Xochitl Gomez. She revealed via video that her new character America Chavez is coming soon to Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure. Disney admitted that this was not necessarily a Halloween announcement, but it can be argued that superheroes are just as synonymous with the holiday as Freddy Krueger or Michael Myers. Also, Multiverse of Madness has been described as the MCU’s first horror movie with “jump scare moments” and haunting imagery. Because of that, Chavez’s inclusion in this announcement is actually quite fitting.
It is never too early to celebrate Halloween, and the countdown to this devilish holiday has officially begun. Disney will be making more Halloween park announcements soon, and you can read more about the existing plans on the Disney Pakrs website.

Peele gained the attention of horror fans everywhere with his first film, Get Out. The movie was a massive success and even earned Peele an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. His follow-up, Us, also did well at the box office and received praise from critics and audiences.
His next film, Nope, doesn’t have many known story details, which makes the mystery even more intriguing. Nope centers around caretakers at a California horse ranch who encounter an otherworldly force that begins to affect the behavior of people and animals. The movie stars Keke Palmer, Daniel Kaluuya, and Steven Yeun.
The first trailer gave a brief glimpse of what we can expect from Peele’s latest. Not many story details were shown, but it appears to be showcasing a haunting, alien presence. Audiences will most certainly be yelling “nope” at the screen.

On April 27, Universal held a panel at CinemaCon 2022 where they presented many of their upcoming movies including Jurassic World Dominion and Minions: The Rise of Gru. One of their upcoming movies is Nope. During the presentation, Peele said that Nope speaks to how the audience often reacts during horror movies. He wants Nope to be for people who are often skeptical of horror movies but still enjoy them.
“This film is definitely a ride. The title speaks to the idea of being in tune with what the audience is thinking and feeling in the theater,” Peele said (shared by Entertainment Weekly). “I know a lot of people who say, when it’s a scary movie, they say, ‘Nope!’ Especially Black audiences, right? We love horror but there’s a skepticism.”
Peele often finds joy in listening and participating in audiences’ reactions to horror films. He wants Nope to be a film that people can enjoy together and compares watching horror movies to an amusement park ride.
“I love a rapt audience saying, ”Nope!’ or, ‘Get out the house!’ I love to encourage that interaction because that’s what’s giving the audience a unique experience,” Peele shared. “Rollercoasters aren’t fun alone. Being scared isn’t fun alone. You need that energy.”
While Nope does star Daniel Kaluuya, Nope is not labeled as a sequel to Get Out. Kaluuya will be playing a different character. So, don’t expect Nope to set up the Jordan Peele cinematic universe.
However, it could have themes similar to Get Out as Peele often likes to tie in his disturbing material with relevant social commentary. Nope also has a title that is something audiences often yell at the screen while watching a horror movie.
Nope arrives in theaters on July 22, 2022.

As Team Flash scrambles to stop the villainous Deathstorm from claiming any more victims in Central City, the super-powered empath Cecile Horton takes point on tracking the fiery serial killer down. Tapping into S.T.A.R. Labs’ advanced systems, Cecile is able to interface with Deathstorm’s mind, only to find herself terrifyingly possessed by the supervillain as he continues his deadly rampage. For The Flash series star Danielle Nicolet, this sinister turn was a sheer joy to play as Season 8 continues.
In an exclusive interview with CBR, Danielle Nicolet shared the fun of painting with darker colors in her performance. She also reflected on Cecile’s journey into becoming a bona fide superhero and hinted at what audiences can expect as The Flash Season 8 nears its finale.

CBR: Danielle, you’ve gotten to show Cecile possessed by a villain in Season 7, but how was it channeling your inner Pazuzu as she is possessed by Deathstorm in this episode?
Danielle Nicolet: I love horror movies more than anything in the world, so anytime [showrunner] Eric Wallace throws a script my way that lets me do scary movie stuff, I get really happy. I know that makes me strange, but it is who I am. [laughs] Anytime I can be possessed, tossed around by evil spirits, anything that’s just wilding out, I have the time of my life doing it. I had so much fun being possessed by Deathstorm!
Were there any specific horror movies or lines in the script that helped inform the Deathstorm-Cecile side of your performance?
Cecile has been possessed a number of times, for example, in “Masquerade” in Season 7. That was probably more possessed than anything because it was a different her coming through, and for that I tried to reference the physicality a lot. Knowing we were shooting it like a horror movie, with Rachel Talalay directing, I really tried to do it like a Japanese horror movie in The Ring-style, where physical movements were really stilted.
With this episode, Deathstorm is more using her as a conduit, so in that sense, possession-wise, it was very much like an Exorcist thing where I lowered the register of my voice, understand what was going to happen to my eyes in post, and try to use that physicality that went from being still to moving really quickly in a threatening way. Obviously, you can tell I’m super into this. [laughs]

In talking about directors, how was it working with Phil Chipera on this particular episode?
Phil is great, and he’s worked with us for a really long time. He used to be our first assistant director, and he’s directed several episodes of the show now over the years. It’s so nice to work with someone you’re that comfortable with, and he has so much love and respect for the cast and crew that the day felt really easy. When you’re doing wild stuff, like being possessed by the otherworldly Deathstorm, as an actor, it’s so much easier to let yourself go there when you have a director that you know you can trust and is never going to make you look bad.
It’s really easy to look silly doing these things and having a director who knows the show they’re directing, that gives me the freedom to go for it because I know, no matter, he’s only going with the takes that work for the story and won’t make me look ridiculous.
Cecile has kind of become Team Flash’s Jedi Master, able to sense disturbances in the Force but also be overcome by pure emotion. What’s your north star in the scenes where you sense emotions or are overcome by them in more charged moments?
On the one hand, I’ve been aware for this whole season that as these things are happening this season, and she does get overwhelmed by emotion, grief, pain, and suffering. The intensity in which she feels things this season has risen. That’s all going someplace that will be revealed in the last three or four episodes. My north star, on the one hand, is knowing some of these things will be Easter eggs that are leading up to a discovery before the finale of this season.
On the other hand, just from an acting perspective and embracing the character, it’s really fun to play a character that has powers. I try, as an actor, to not judge the circumstance or script at all and just really let myself feel what we’re playing in the scene. I feel the more honestly I play that, what Cecile feels in a given moment, the more honestly it’s going to read and relate for the audience — at least that’s my intention!

In sitting down with Eric Wallace, was there any direction you or he wanted to take Cecile in The Flash Season 8?
A part of that I can’t answer without major season spoilers. [laughs] Just know that that means that it went good for me! My whole thing with Cecile is, ever since I joined the show, I loved that I knew she was going to get powers, and, most importantly, I never wanted to play a weak woman. She is smart. We know that she had a family that supported her as she grew up, went to law school, and raised a kid on her own. This is an intelligent woman who became the District Attorney of Central City, and her getting powers should only amplify her strengths, just in a different way.
I’ve been really grateful because it’s really easy on a show like this for the writers to fall into a hole that lets girls be rescued by boys. Especially with Cecile being in a relationship with a cop, it would’ve been really easy for her to get [to] that space, where the bad guy kidnaps Cecile and Joe has to save her. It’s been a joy to have this progression of Cecile getting stronger and more clear of purpose, in terms of her context in Team Flash. This season especially, that all really comes together, and Cecile is a strong voice in the team and a fight force. That’s what I was really hoping for, and I’m really excited that I’ve gotten to experience that with her.
I feel like we haven’t seen you much with Jesse L. Martin this season or seen the legal side of Cecile’s professional background.
Over the course of the next handful of episodes, there will be a lot more of that. I think this season in particular — because “Armageddon” was five episodes long, we spent the first five episodes [of Season 8] living in what we believed to be a post-Joe world, in a space 10 years from now and what we all became when we lost Joe, which we ultimately didn’t.
I think it feels like it’s taken a while to get to everyone’s personal stories because it’s been a much more truncated period, in that sense. [In] Episode 6, we essentially hit the reset button. Barry figured it out: Reverse-Flash was fooling us all along. We got Joe back, and then we were able to move into real life again. Over the next handful of episodes, that’s when we’ll really be back in that as we make our way. We’ll pick up to Armageddon-level craziness for the last several episodes. The last three are going to be a massive finale, and everyone is all up in it.
