The perception might be that Nicole Kidman has countless scripts sent her way. Too many, in fact, to choose which to pursue. That directors are knocking down her door, begging her to be in their project. But Kidman says that is not the case.
“It’s not like there’s a bunch of scripts coming at me every week with these fabulous filmmakers [attached] and you’re just going, ‘Yes. Yes. No. Yes,’” says the Oscar-winning actress and mother of four, including two teen daughters with husband Keith Urban. “It might appear like that but it’s definitely not like that.”
However, she acknowledges that — thanks to a mix of tempting offers and her own producing initiative — her career is flourishing just fine, jumping in recent years between eye-catching miniseries Big Little Lies, The Undoing and Nine Perfect Strangers (all of which she executive produced), and films such as Bombshell, The Prom and this year’s awards contender Being The Ricardos, for which she is SAG-nominated.
“I’m sort of astounded at what possibilities have arisen,” says Kidman. She will often express this shock to her mother, who will say in return, “But you’ve worked hard, nothing’s been given to you on a platter,” relays Kidman. “And I go, ‘Yeah, okay.’ There have been ups and downs, but I would never have thought at this age [54], at this time of my life, there would be the hope and the possibilities that there are. Not just as an actress, but as a producer and the ability to jump-start people and work with people who [deserve opportunities].”
Indeed, Kidman is most excited to hold other women up by using her name and her influence. Under the umbrella of her production company, Blossom Films, which she started in 2010 with Per Saari, she is finding much joy in helping progress other people’s careers. She recently executive produced Apple TV+ anthology series Roar, and was able to award Australian director Kim Gehrig, who had prioritised raising her kids while helming commercials and music videos, her first television assignment. Kidman is also producing Expats as part of her overall deal with Amazon Prime Video, which she is keen to mention because of its actors.
“I’ve got a show right now where the two leads are Korean-American and Indian-American women and I’m the supporting role,” she explains. “They would never have gotten those leads; we had to advocate [for them]. They’re not stars but they will both become huge stars, mark my words. [These] are the sort of things that are exciting for me right now.”
Behind the curtain
Of course, getting to play iconic comedian Lucille Ball in Amazon Studios’ Being The Ricardos, under the wing of Oscar-winning screenwriter-turned-director Aaron Sorkin, is also exciting. But despite the handful of auteurs over the years who personally reached out to Kidman to express interest in working with her — including Jane Campion, Baz Luhrmann, Lars von Trier and Stanley Kubrick — it was surprising to Kidman that Sorkin wanted to collaborate.
“I’m idiosyncratic,” says Kidman, “as I think all the directors [who ask to work with her] are. So it’s finding people who see something in you, and are interested in whatever is in you that maybe doesn’t appeal to everyone.”
When it came to playing Ball, Kidman felt a kinship with the I Love Lucy star in many respects: “The pressure and the struggle, and the desire to have a home and a loving marriage and kids, and yet also to fulfil a creative path. And then the ups and downs of that path based on age, opportunity and how people view you.” But otherwise, getting into character required a sort of rewiring of Kidman’s brain.
Not least, there were two Balls that Kidman had to play: the Lucy that 60 million people saw every week in their living rooms; and the woman who was married to Desi Arnaz (played by Javier Bardem), trying to run her business, run her home and be happy and fulfilled. This was the primary guidance she received from Sorkin, along with his desire not to carbon copy Kidman into Ball.
“It’s Lucille Ball who creates the character of Lucy Ricardo,” says Kidman. “[Sorkin] didn’t want me imitating the I Love Lucy show because everything that he’d absorbed and read and then written [in the script] was very different; it was the woman behind the curtain. That is the fascinating part of the storytelling.”
Collaborative effort
The search for rich storytelling saw Kidman team up with Reese Witherspoon and her production company Hello Sunshine to option 2014 novel Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty; it was developed into David E Kelley’s hit HBO series of the same name. Kidman then optioned Moriarty’s Nine Perfect Strangers for the Hulu miniseries — although its author admitted she had written the role of wellness resort founder Masha Dmitrichenko with the actress in mind, making it not so much kismet as collaboration.
“[Other offers] didn’t have the substance that I [was] craving,” says Kidman, who is busier at the moment with developing projects than she is with fielding scripts for potential roles. “I think as you get older, if you’ve lived a life, you have a lot to give. There’s an enormous amount there waiting to be used, mined, explored and shared.
“My [own] life, it’s obviously private, but it’s a very real life. I don’t need to go into detail, but I am dealing with what probably many other people at my age are dealing with: teen girls, mothers, you know — just deeply embedded in intimate relationships in my family and all those things that go with it.”
This introspection goes even further for Kidman as she admits to examining her own “sense of mortality” and her “physical limitations”. Though you wouldn’t know it, judging by her experience on Robert Eggers’ The Northman — which The Lighthouse filmmaker shot in Ireland and Northern Ireland from August to December 2020, and is set in 10th-century Iceland.
“I loved the mountain and the biting cold wind and night-shooting at 2am in the mud,” Kidman recalls, with audible excitement, of playing Queen Gudrun opposite Alexander Skarsgard. “I thought it was going to kill me but I rose up. I must have some Viking blood in me because I came alive in those conditions. I was hearty. I never got sick. I never got hurt.”

Not only is he set to star in AMC’s Preacher, he’s just snapped up roles in Amazon’s The Tick and Nikolaj Arcel‘s Stephen King adaptation The Dark Tower. Not surprisingly, given his knack for playing colorful and creepy characters, he’ll be playing villains in all of them.
Let’s start with The Dark Tower. Deadline reports Haley is in negotiations to play Richard Sayre, whom they describe as “a menacing humanoid who is the vampire leader and kowtows to no one.” In the books, the character makes his debut in Wolves of the Calla — the fifth installment of King’s eight-part saga — but as we’ve heard before, Arcel’s film adaptation will be shaking up the structure, mixing and matching from different parts of the source material.
The Dark Tower stars Idris Elba as Roland the gunslinger, who chases the Man in Black (Matthew McConaughey) across a post-apocalyptic landscape in search of the Dark Tower, the nexus of all universes. Also starring are Tom Taylor as Jake Chambers and Abbey Lee as Tirana. The Dark Tower began shooting this week for release on February 17, 2017, so expect to hear even more casting news out of this one in the coming weeks.
Moving on, Deadline also broke the news that Haley is set to appear in Amazon’s The Tick, a revival of the brilliant-but-cancelled 2001 superhero series from Ben Edlund. The Tick only has a pilot order from Amazon right now, but if it get picked up to series Haley will be a regular. Peter Serafinowicz leads as the new incarnation of the bright blue musclebound superhero (replacing Patrick Warburton), and Griffin Newman plays his sidekick Arthur. Valorie Curry is Arthur’s sister Dot.
Haley will be The Terror, the supervillain leader of a league of evil. He’s “our world’s epitome of the criminal mastermind, a hooded ancient villain barking at his minions whose incredible will power and tenacity have powered an underworld syndicate for decades.” The character appeared in one episode of the earlier incarnation of The Tick live-action series, where he was played by Armin Shimerman.
All of this follows the recent news that Haley was cast as bad guy Odin Quincannon in AMC’s Preacher series. Haley, an Oscar nominee for Little Children, is also known for playing Rorschach in Zack Snyder’s Watchmen and Freddy Kreuger in the Nightmare on Elm Street remake. Mike Flanagan is one of the most prominent names in the horror genre today. From Stephen King adaptations, such as Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep, to his original movies like Hush, Flanagan has produced his fair share of iconic horror pieces. His deal with Netflix has led to three excellent horror miniseries: Haunting of Hill House, Haunting of Bly Manor, and Midnight Mass.
His most recent release, Midnight Mass, was delayed — as most productions — due to Covid-19 restrictions. It was supposed to start production in March 2020 but started only in October of the same year. There is no doubt, however, that the wait was worth it, and filming during the pandemic while stuck together on a small island created even more intimacies. It’s a heartbreaking, masterful story that built gradually until audiences closed their eyes in fearful anticipation. Flanagan is known for his slow-burn stories – this one is no different.

What is Midnight Mass? The show tells the story of a secluded island that starts to experience miracles after a charming young priest arrives. However, there is always a price for supposed miracles in this broken world, and the town’s citizens have to quickly figure out if they are willing to pay or not. Brilliantly using the vampire legend to critique religious extremism and the excuses people give themselves to ease their minds, here is why Midnight Mass was the best horror series of 2021.
A Necessary Story
Netflix
Flanagan is known for making his characters’ drama the most important element, and the horror is used to enhance them and in service of the drama, not the other way around. He does this expertly in Midnight Mass, using the drama to tackle a lot of current issues and also personal battles.
The story starts with Riley, played by Zachary Gilford, sitting on a curb on the street. In front of him: a car crash and a body of a young girl receiving CPR. Riley is drunk and is the reason why all of this is happening; he ends up going to jail because of the drunk driving manslaughter. Flanagan explained that this scenario was his worst fear while struggling with alcohol. Riley then goes back to Crockett Island, where he was once a carefree teenager, and there he has to face both the religion (which was a big part of his life) and people he left behind.

The creator of the show commented in an interview that even though there are a lot of religious elements in Midnight Mass (as there are in many great works of horror), the narrative he wanted to create was about faith itself. Flanagan has said, “It is not a show about religion, is a show about faith itself and how corruptible that can be”.
A character who best represents this is Bev, played by Samantha Sloyan, who is the most fanatic Catholic practitioner on the island. Bev witnesses a gruesome murder but quickly finds a meaning as to why that happened in the Bible, justifying the murderous act in a heartbeat. She continues to do this for the rest of the series, twisting the proverbs to fit the narrative she created; in theology, this is called ‘proof-texting.’ It can be even be inferred that Flanagan was trying to make a point: something evil (for example, the vampire) can be perceived as something heavenly when it helps us get what we want; Bev certainly thought that way.
Faith can be a beautiful thing, but it can also be a reason to have prejudices over other people. Atheists are looked down upon by people like Dev, but so are those of other faiths. The town’s new law enforcement is Sheriff Hassan, played by Rahul Kohli, a Muslim who faces a lot of problems with the townspeople because of it.
Midnight Mass is so scary because of just how accurate its representation of fanaticism is. There is no denying that the vampire is scary, but he is the background for unspeakable acts to be justified. Flanagan has said, “I’m fascinated by how our beliefs shape how we treat each other […] Looking at politics and the world today, so many of us are behaving based on the belief that God is on our side, and that God dislikes the same people we do.”
Clever Use of Vampirism
Flanagan’s latest miniseries features a character which we have seen countless times in films, TV, and books: the vampire. However, he does something very different with this blood-thirsty monster that enhances the terror and creativity of the series. He did something extremely clever: there is no indication in the miniseries’ trailer that the monster is a vampire. He avoided Midnight Mass being branded as ‘that new vampire Netflix series’ and used that in his favor. The trailer is intriguing enough to make you want to see the series but does not give anything away from the plot. In fact, the vampirism of the plot doesn’t even reveal itself until several hours in, and is all the better and more mysterious because of it. He told the ReelBlend podcast that, “Netflix I think did such a beautiful job marketing the show because they managed to sell the show for exactly what it is without telling you exactly what it is.”
Aside from the way Flanagan reveals the vampire (and the ingenious way it is confused with an angel of God), the filmmaker avoids visuals that audiences usually associate with the creatures. It is not a mysterious, tall pale man who comes into town; it is a demonic-looking monster that scares viewers from the get-go. His appearance could be considered a nod to the famous German silent film Nosferatu— which has a very different aesthetic from modern productions of the monster. Also, when someone gets transformed into a vampire, there is no major change in their appearance: only their eyes change. This makes it eerier, because you can’t know from afar who was turned and who is still human.
To intelligently enhance Flanagan’s previous choices, not once in the series do we even hear the word ‘vampire.’ He utilizes the elements that give us fear while not having to explain how this creature works (daylight hurts him, he has bat-like behavior, etc.). Flanagan stated that was an intentional effort because, “It’s a word that evokes a very specific reaction.” He distances it from the traditional connotations of vampirism, actually associating it with a divine, heavenly messenger at first before revealing its more terrifying aspects. In this sense, he reinvents the vampire to fit his purposes.

Incredible Cinematography
It is no surprise that Flanagan cares about cinematography. This element is very clear from his previous movies and miniseries. The low saturation present in Midnight Mass enhances the violence of the dark red of the blood, especially when it is spilled against the background — which happens various times in the series. The low saturation makes the blood even more disgusting due to the color contrast. It almost hurts to look at it, because the audience gets accustomed to seeing only sepia colors in the beach-side town.
The use of various wide shots makes the viewer uneasy even if they don’t understand why. As viewers, we are used to being shown exactly where and what to look. So, when we have an open shot, it urges us to look at the edges of the frame; and Flanagan is known for placing ghosts in hidden locations. In Midnight Mass, the scenes are much shorter. However, there is a seven-minute scene with no cuts at the beginning of episode two, “Book II: Psalms.” This external shot at the beach had a lot of technical difficulties, such as the clouds that would change the lighting and the ocean that would carry the props (hundreds of dead cats) away from the scene. The realism of a small town getting together once a strange event happened was enhanced by the absence of cuts and made the scene tenser, following the characters in real-time as they comb the beach in confusion. This can also be seen when the characters sit down and talk, especially the scenes between Riley and Father Paul Hill, played by Hamish Linklater. Linklater also makes the show a must-watch — he does an incredible job playing the priest everybody loves, and balancing the genuine compassion of the character with his tragic misunderstanding of the evil that’s right in front of him.
A gripping story from beginning to end, combined with technical excellence and theological provocation, Midnight Mass was undoubtedly the best horror series released in 2021. What’s next for Mike Flanagan? The director is currently filming his new miniseries, The Fall of the House of Usher, which adapts the father of horror short stories, Edgar Allan Poe. He’s also bringing Midnight Club to Netflix, starring Nightmare on Elm Street icon Heather Langenkamp. If these are only half as good as Midnight Mass, they’d still be pretty great.

Mike Flanagan is one of the most prominent names in the horror genre today. His deal with Netflix has led to three excellent horror miniseries: Haunting of Hill House, Haunting of Bly Manor, and Midnight Mass.
His most recent release, Midnight Mass, was delayed — as most productions — due to Covid-19 restrictions. It was supposed to start production in March 2020 but started only in October of the same year. There is no doubt, however, that the wait was worth it, and filming during the pandemic while stuck together on a small island created even more intimacies. It’s a heartbreaking, masterful story that built gradually until audiences closed their eyes in fearful anticipation. Flanagan is known for his slow-burn stories – this one is no different.

What is Midnight Mass? The show tells the story of a secluded island that starts to experience miracles after a charming young priest arrives. However, there is always a price for supposed miracles in this broken world, and the town’s citizens have to quickly figure out if they are willing to pay or not. Brilliantly using the vampire legend to critique religious extremism and the excuses people give themselves to ease their minds, here is why Midnight Mass was the best horror series of 2021.
A Necessary Story
Netflix
Flanagan is known for making his characters’ drama the most important element, and the horror is used to enhance them and in service of the drama, not the other way around. He does this expertly in Midnight Mass, using the drama to tackle a lot of current issues and also personal battles.
The story starts with Riley, played by Zachary Gilford, sitting on a curb on the street. In front of him: a car crash and a body of a young girl receiving CPR. Riley is drunk and is the reason why all of this is happening; he ends up going to jail because of the drunk driving manslaughter. Flanagan explained that this scenario was his worst fear while struggling with alcohol. Riley then goes back to Crockett Island, where he was once a carefree teenager, and there he has to face both the religion (which was a big part of his life) and people he left behind.

The creator of the show commented in an interview that even though there are a lot of religious elements in Midnight Mass (as there are in many great works of horror), the narrative he wanted to create was about faith itself. Flanagan has said, “It is not a show about religion, is a show about faith itself and how corruptible that can be”.
A character who best represents this is Bev, played by Samantha Sloyan, who is the most fanatic Catholic practitioner on the island. Bev witnesses a gruesome murder but quickly finds a meaning as to why that happened in the Bible, justifying the murderous act in a heartbeat. She continues to do this for the rest of the series, twisting the proverbs to fit the narrative she created; in theology, this is called ‘proof-texting.’ It can be even be inferred that Flanagan was trying to make a point: something evil (for example, the vampire) can be perceived as something heavenly when it helps us get what we want; Bev certainly thought that way.
Faith can be a beautiful thing, but it can also be a reason to have prejudices over other people. Atheists are looked down upon by people like Dev, but so are those of other faiths. The town’s new law enforcement is Sheriff Hassan, played by Rahul Kohli, a Muslim who faces a lot of problems with the townspeople because of it.
Midnight Mass is so scary because of just how accurate its representation of fanaticism is. There is no denying that the vampire is scary, but he is the background for unspeakable acts to be justified. Flanagan has said, “I’m fascinated by how our beliefs shape how we treat each other […] Looking at politics and the world today, so many of us are behaving based on the belief that God is on our side, and that God dislikes the same people we do.”
Clever Use of Vampirism
Flanagan’s latest miniseries features a character which we have seen countless times in films, TV, and books: the vampire. However, he does something very different with this blood-thirsty monster that enhances the terror and creativity of the series. He did something extremely clever: there is no indication in the miniseries’ trailer that the monster is a vampire. He avoided Midnight Mass being branded as ‘that new vampire Netflix series’ and used that in his favor. The trailer is intriguing enough to make you want to see the series but does not give anything away from the plot. In fact, the vampirism of the plot doesn’t even reveal itself until several hours in, and is all the better and more mysterious because of it. He told the ReelBlend podcast that, “Netflix I think did such a beautiful job marketing the show because they managed to sell the show for exactly what it is without telling you exactly what it is.”
Aside from the way Flanagan reveals the vampire (and the ingenious way it is confused with an angel of God), the filmmaker avoids visuals that audiences usually associate with the creatures. It is not a mysterious, tall pale man who comes into town; it is a demonic-looking monster that scares viewers from the get-go. His appearance could be considered a nod to the famous German silent film Nosferatu— which has a very different aesthetic from modern productions of the monster. Also, when someone gets transformed into a vampire, there is no major change in their appearance: only their eyes change. This makes it eerier, because you can’t know from afar who was turned and who is still human.
To intelligently enhance Flanagan’s previous choices, not once in the series do we even hear the word ‘vampire.’ He utilizes the elements that give us fear while not having to explain how this creature works (daylight hurts him, he has bat-like behavior, etc.). Flanagan stated that was an intentional effort because, “It’s a word that evokes a very specific reaction.” He distances it from the traditional connotations of vampirism, actually associating it with a divine, heavenly messenger at first before revealing its more terrifying aspects. In this sense, he reinvents the vampire to fit his purposes.

Incredible Cinematography
It is no surprise that Flanagan cares about cinematography. This element is very clear from his previous movies and miniseries. The low saturation present in Midnight Mass enhances the violence of the dark red of the blood, especially when it is spilled against the background — which happens various times in the series. The low saturation makes the blood even more disgusting due to the color contrast. It almost hurts to look at it, because the audience gets accustomed to seeing only sepia colors in the beach-side town.
The use of various wide shots makes the viewer uneasy even if they don’t understand why. As viewers, we are used to being shown exactly where and what to look. So, when we have an open shot, it urges us to look at the edges of the frame; and Flanagan is known for placing ghosts in hidden locations. The New Mutants star Henry Zaga still thinks it’s possible the film’s characters could crossover into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Originally shot back in 2017, The New Mutants was supposed to be released to theaters in 2018, before experiencing multiple, seemingly endless release date delays from both Fox and Disney. After several years of waiting, The New Mutants finally debuted in open movie theaters last week, much to the surprise of everyone who had become convinced the film would never see the light of day.
In the days following its long-awaited release, The New Mutants has gone on to rake in some relatively strong box office numbers (considering the current state of the world). However, it’s also left viewers wondering about its peculiar place among comic book films. Specifically, many have questioned whether they’ll ever get to see the film’s version of its characters on the screen ever again, or if instead, The New Mutants is destined to be remembered as a one-and-done job for all those involved.

In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Zaga, who plays Roberto da Costa/Sunspot in the film, voiced belief in the potential for either a self-contained The New Mutants sequel or a follow-up that sees the characters cross over into the MCU. When asked what he knows about any possible sequel plans, Zaga said:
The sky is the limit. I think if fans show up and if people give it a huge thumbs up and call for another one, we’ll go and make it. It’s really up to everyone… There is a possibility of joining the MCU, and there is a possibility of just being its own thing in its own timeline and narrative. It’s all up in the air. Fingers crossed.
While Zaga’s comments are understandably optimistic, they come just after The New Mutants director Josh Boone said there have been, up until this point, no discussions with Marvel Studios about transitioning the characters into the MCU. Additionally, although the film is performing admirably in theaters right now, it was met with mostly negative reviews from critics upon its release. Zaga’s co-star Maisie Williams even jokingly acknowledged one of the film’s scathing reviews on social media. Combined, these two details make a The New Mutants sequel or bringing the film’s characters into the MCU seem overwhelmingly unlikely.
There is, of course, always the potential for Marvel to surprise audiences, especially if The New Mutants goes on to gain a massive online following. The very existence of things like Fox’s Deadpool films or the Snyder Cut of Justice League are proof of what can happen when a large number of very vocal fans push studios hard enough for what they want. Whether The New Mutants will ever garner the same level of online support those projects did is a mystery. So, for right now, the chance of The New Mutants becoming a legitimate ongoing franchise will have to remain slim, at best.

What was the toll of this stress and adversity on the long-term health of its population? And could exposure to extreme weather events accelerate the aging process?
“While everyone ages, we don’t all age at the same rate, and our lived experiences, both negative and positive, can alter this pace of aging. One negative life experience, surviving an extreme event, can lead to chronic inflammation and the early onset of some age-related diseases, like heart disease,” said corresponding author Noah Snyder-Mackler, an assistant professor at Arizona State University’s School of Life Sciences. “But we still don’t know exactly how these events get embedded in our bodies leading to negative health effects that may not show up until decades after the event itself.”
As the final impact on the survivors’ mental and physical health remains to be tallied, a group of biologists led by Snyder-Mackler have looked toward one of our close evolutionary cousins for the first clues.
Along with the human toll, the devastation impacted all the island’s wildlife, including a group of free-ranging rhesus macaques living on the isolated Cayo Santiago island near Puerto Rico. The animals have lived on the island since 1938, when the Caribbean Primate Research Center field station first opened.
Now, the ASU team, led by Snyder-Mackler and lead author Marina Watowich-a graduate student at the University of Washington and research scientist at ASU, and their collaborators at the Caribbean Primate Research Center, University of Pennsylvania, University of Exeter and New York University, have published (will include DOI) one of the first results that shows the effects of natural disasters may have molecularly accelerated aging in the monkeys’ immune systems.
Accelerated aging
As a high-end category 4 hurricane, Maria caused massive devastation to the natural habitat and research infrastructure on Cayo Santiago. Remarkably, only 2.75% of the macaque population died in the immediate aftermath of the storm. And in the year after the hurricane, there was no difference in survival. But, was the health of the hurricane survivors affected in other ways?
People of the same chronological age- the number of years since birth-can differ in when and if they develop disease. It is well-established that people who have suffered extremely adverse experiences have higher risk of developing heart disease and other diseases more common in older individuals. How these detrimental experiences ‘get under the skin’ to promote disease is still unknown. One idea is that this phenomenon is potentially due to extreme adversity ‘aging’ the body. People can differ in their biological age, which can be measured by molecular signposts embedded in our genes, immune system and physiology.
“From this study, we have measured the molecular changes associated with aging, including disruptions of protein-folding genes, greater inflammatory immune cell marker gene expression and older biological aging,” said Watowich.
After a careful analysis of the genes expressed in the macaques’ immune cells, the researchers found that the adversity resulting from the hurricane may have accelerated aging of the immune system.
“On average, monkeys who lived through the Hurricane had immune gene expression profiles that had aged 2 extra years, or approximately 7-8 years of human lifespan,” said Watowich.
The findings suggest that severe weather events — -which are becoming more frequent and severe due to climate change — may lead to biologically detrimental consequences for those who experience them. This is especially pressing given that hurricanes and other extreme weather events are becoming stronger and more common with climate change.
Biological aging
One kilometer off the southeastern coast of Puerto Rico lies Cayo Santiago, a 15.2-hectare island home to a population of 1,800 free-ranging rhesus macaques that have been studied for almost a century.
“Cayo Santiago was the first part of Puerto Rico hit by Hurricane Maria and took on the full force of the category 4 storm,” said Snyder-Mackler. “The hurricane destroyed homes and infrastructure across Puerto Rico, and on Cayo Santiago it decimated most of the vegetation, as well as the water cisterns and research infrastructure needed to maintain the field station.”
The rhesus macaques share many behavioral and biological features of people, including how their bodies age, but compressed into a lifespan one quarter of ours. By studying the macaques, the scientific team knew they could get estimates of aging in years rather than the decades from equivalent human studies.
To test how Hurricane Maria influenced immune cell gene regulation and aging, Marina Watowich and the rest of the team were able to leverage a collection of blood samples and history of detailed demographic data from age-matched subsets of the Cayo Santiago rhesus macaque population.
By performing a global analysis of immune gene expression, they found 4% of genes expressed in immune cells were altered after the hurricane. Of these, genes that had higher expression after the hurricane were involved in inflammation, and genes dampened by the hurricane were those involved in protein translation, protein folding/refolding, the adaptive immune response and T cells.
The down regulation of so-called heat shock genes, which promote the proper function of protein-making in our cells, was most affected, some with two-times lower activity after Hurricane Maria. These genes have also been implicated in cardiovascular and Alzheimer’s disease.
Remarkably, they found a strong correlation in the hurricane exposure and aging effects on gene expression, where the effect of the hurricane was similar to the effect of the immune system getting older.
To understand how the hurricane may have affected amounts of immune cell populations, they looked at profiles from single-cell RNA sequencing to identify genes that are preferentially expressed in key immune cell types.
“Overall, cell-specific markers of canonical pro-inflammatory immune cells, such as CD14+ monocytes, had higher expression in older individuals and those that experienced the hurricane. Further, expression of helper T-cell genes, an anti-inflammatory cell type, decreased in older animals and those after the hurricane. Getting under the skin
From their long-term studies, as part of a collaboration with the Caribbean Primate Research Center, University of Pennsylvania, University of Exeter and New York University, they had four years of data prior to Hurricane Maria (n = 435) and one year after (n = 108) Hurricane Maria. They hypothesized that exposure to the hurricane would recapitulate molecular changes associated with the natural process of aging.
“Our findings suggest that differences in immune cell gene expression in individuals exposed to an extreme natural disaster were in many ways similar to the effects of the natural aging process,” said Snyder-Mackler. “We also observed evidence for accelerated biological aging in samples collected after animals experienced Hurricane Maria.”
“Importantly, we identify a critical mechanism-immune cell gene regulation-that may explain how adversity, specifically in the context of natural disasters, may ultimately ‘get under the skin’ to drive age-associated disease onset and progression,” said Watowich.
Interestingly, not all monkeys responded similarly to the hurricane. For example, some monkeys’ biological ages increased much more than others. The team hypothesizes that there may be other aspects of the monkey’s environment that can influence their response to adversity.
For example, just like in people, social support is a critical aspect of the ability to help cope and deal with adversity. It is possible that monkeys with greater social support after the storm were better able to overcome any detrimental effects-an aspect the team hopes to investigate soon. The study did have its limitations, foremost, that they could not measure aging rates within the same individuals before or after the hurricane.
For future studies, they hope the work can expand to include longer-term studies of for every individual within a population to learn more about the intersection between biological aging, adversity and social structures and in the face of a natural disaster.
Lastly, they hope their results will encourage efforts to develop a better understanding of aging and adversity and one day, even a successful mitigation strategy to lessen the toll from natural disasters.

What was the toll of this stress and adversity on the long-term health of its population? And could exposure to extreme weather events accelerate the aging process?
“While everyone ages, we don’t all age at the same rate, and our lived experiences, both negative and positive, can alter this pace of aging. One negative life experience, surviving an extreme event, can lead to chronic inflammation and the early onset of some age-related diseases, like heart disease,” said corresponding author Noah Snyder-Mackler, an assistant professor at Arizona State University’s School of Life Sciences. “But we still don’t know exactly how these events get embedded in our bodies leading to negative health effects that may not show up until decades after the event itself.”
As the final impact on the survivors’ mental and physical health remains to be tallied, a group of biologists led by Snyder-Mackler have looked toward one of our close evolutionary cousins for the first clues.
Along with the human toll, the devastation impacted all the island’s wildlife, including a group of free-ranging rhesus macaques living on the isolated Cayo Santiago island near Puerto Rico. The animals have lived on the island since 1938, when the Caribbean Primate Research Center field station first opened.
Now, the ASU team, led by Snyder-Mackler and lead author Marina Watowich-a graduate student at the University of Washington and research scientist at ASU, and their collaborators at the Caribbean Primate Research Center, University of Pennsylvania, University of Exeter and New York University, have published (will include DOI) one of the first results that shows the effects of natural disasters may have molecularly accelerated aging in the monkeys’ immune systems.
Accelerated aging
As a high-end category 4 hurricane, Maria caused massive devastation to the natural habitat and research infrastructure on Cayo Santiago. Remarkably, only 2.75% of the macaque population died in the immediate aftermath of the storm. And in the year after the hurricane, there was no difference in survival. But, was the health of the hurricane survivors affected in other ways?
People of the same chronological age- the number of years since birth-can differ in when and if they develop disease. It is well-established that people who have suffered extremely adverse experiences have higher risk of developing heart disease and other diseases more common in older individuals. How these detrimental experiences ‘get under the skin’ to promote disease is still unknown. One idea is that this phenomenon is potentially due to extreme adversity ‘aging’ the body. People can differ in their biological age, which can be measured by molecular signposts embedded in our genes, immune system and physiology.
“From this study, we have measured the molecular changes associated with aging, including disruptions of protein-folding genes, greater inflammatory immune cell marker gene expression and older biological aging,” said Watowich.
After a careful analysis of the genes expressed in the macaques’ immune cells, the researchers found that the adversity resulting from the hurricane may have accelerated aging of the immune system.
“On average, monkeys who lived through the Hurricane had immune gene expression profiles that had aged 2 extra years, or approximately 7-8 years of human lifespan,” said Watowich.
The findings suggest that severe weather events — -which are becoming more frequent and severe due to climate change — may lead to biologically detrimental consequences for those who experience them. This is especially pressing given that hurricanes and other extreme weather events are becoming stronger and more common with climate change.
Biological aging
One kilometer off the southeastern coast of Puerto Rico lies Cayo Santiago, a 15.2-hectare island home to a population of 1,800 free-ranging rhesus macaques that have been studied for almost a century.
“Cayo Santiago was the first part of Puerto Rico hit by Hurricane Maria and took on the full force of the category 4 storm,” said Snyder-Mackler. “The hurricane destroyed homes and infrastructure across Puerto Rico, and on Cayo Santiago it decimated most of the vegetation, as well as the water cisterns and research infrastructure needed to maintain the field station.”
The rhesus macaques share many behavioral and biological features of people, including how their bodies age, but compressed into a lifespan one quarter of ours. By studying the macaques, the scientific team knew they could get estimates of aging in years rather than the decades from equivalent human studies.
To test how Hurricane Maria influenced immune cell gene regulation and aging, Marina Watowich and the rest of the team were able to leverage a collection of blood samples and history of detailed demographic data from age-matched subsets of the Cayo Santiago rhesus macaque population.
By performing a global analysis of immune gene expression, they found 4% of genes expressed in immune cells were altered after the hurricane. Of these, genes that had higher expression after the hurricane were involved in inflammation, and genes dampened by the hurricane were those involved in protein translation, protein folding/refolding, the adaptive immune response and T cells.
The down regulation of so-called heat shock genes, which promote the proper function of protein-making in our cells, was most affected, some with two-times lower activity after Hurricane Maria. These genes have also been implicated in cardiovascular and Alzheimer’s disease.
Remarkably, they found a strong correlation in the hurricane exposure and aging effects on gene expression, where the effect of the hurricane was similar to the effect of the immune system getting older.
To understand how the hurricane may have affected amounts of immune cell populations, they looked at profiles from single-cell RNA sequencing to identify genes that are preferentially expressed in key immune cell types.
“Overall, cell-specific markers of canonical pro-inflammatory immune cells, such as CD14+ monocytes, had higher expression in older individuals and those that experienced the hurricane. Further, expression of helper T-cell genes, an anti-inflammatory cell type, decreased in older animals and those after the hurricane. Together, this possibly implicates more inflammatory activity in animals after storm, similar to what we see in older individuals,” said Snyder-Mackler.

Questione di format sicuramente, ma soprattutto di attenzione (verrebbe da dire maniacale) nell’interpretarlo. Il Mystery Shopper realizzato da BVA Doxa in esclusiva per Food, dedicato questo mese a Iper La grande i, conferma le ottime performance delle grandi superfici nell’andare incontro alle attese della clientela non solo in termini di assortimento – il che appare scontato –, ma anche di immagine e percepito del punto vendita, qualità del servizio offerto dal personale, adozione di accorgimenti resi necessari dal perdurare della pandemia. Nel caso dell’insegna del Gruppo Finiper, tutto ciò è svolto con una precisione che si traduce in un risultato clamoroso, migliore sotto alcuni aspetti persino di quanto fatto registrare da Esselunga, che pure si attestava su un livello di assoluta eccellenza (vedi Food 11-2021, pag. 34). Un testa a testa che – al netto delle differenze tra le due catene in termini di caratteristiche del concept e numerosità dei negozi – mette in luce un approccio sistematico e ‘industriale’ al tema della qualità complessiva del ‘prodotto’ punto vendita.

GLI INDICATORI SINTETICI
L’indagine su Iper La grande i è stata realizzata da BVA Doxa lo scorso novembre su un campione di 15 ipermercati situati per la quasi totalità in Lombardia, tranne due superfici collocate rispettivamente in Veneto e Piemonte. In verità stavolta parlare di campione appare riduttivo, visto che nel complesso la catena conta 21 ipermercati e un superstore. “Il primo dato che balza all’occhio – dichiara Andrea Tozzi, Research Manager di BVA Doxa – è il livello elevatissimo dei risultati ottenuti, con cinque negozi che vanno dai 96 a 99 punti nell’Overall Score, cioè l’indicatore sintetico che fotografa la valutazione complessiva data dal mystery shopper. Uno solo dei 15 iper visitati non ha guadagnato giudizi ottimi e ha quindi influito negativamente sulla media, che però si attesta comunque su un lusinghiero 89%, cioè due punti in più rispetto a Esselunga e cinque lunghezze sopra il risultato di Bennet, altro operatore comparabile” (vedi Food 9-2021 pag. 44, ndr).
Più nel dettaglio, in fatto di prodotti a scaffale Iper La grande i incassa sempre il massimo del punteggio, ma emerge benissimo anche sotto il profilo della tenuta degli addetti (90%), dell’interazione di reparto e delle misure anti-Covid (entrambi a quota 87%). “Relativamente all’ultimo ambito – continua Tozzi – il 20% dei mystery shopper segnala la presenza all’ingresso di un’apparecchiatura per misurare automaticamente la temperatura. Nel 93% dei casi, sempre all’entrata del negozio sono posizionati dei dispenser per gel disinfettante, tutti giudicati funzionanti ‘bene’ o ‘molto bene’ e per il 93% complessivamente puliti. L’80% delle volte, inoltre, i dispenser sono visibili anche in altri spazi della superficie commerciale, come la zona casse, dove nell’87% delle visite effettuate per conto di BVA Doxa è stata fatta rispettare la distanza interpersonale di sicurezza di un metro tra le persone in fila per pagare, contro il 73% di Bennet e il 53% di Esselunga”.
L’AMPIEZZA DELL’OFFERTA
Tornando all’inizio del percorso d’acquisto, tutti i mystery shopper entrando hanno avuto la percezione di un punto vendita complessivamente pulito e per il 93% di loro anche complessivamente ordinato. Iper La grande i fa il pieno di consensi con riguardo alla voce dell’aspetto dell’addetto di reparto (100% complessivamente curato) e sempre in divisa, accompagnata dal badge nel 40% dei casi. La mascherina indossata in modo corretto appare una costante (93%), inoltre tutti gli addetti a cui il mystery shopper si sono rivolti erano intenti a sistemare prodotti a scaffale e ben l’87% ha ascoltato con attenzione la domanda posta. Nel rispondere il 33% ha dato l’idea di impegnarsi molto, a fronte di un 60% che si è impegnato abbastanza e di un 7% percepito come meno partecipe. Tutti hanno però mantenuto un’espressione sorridente e disponibile.
L’insegna dà comunque il meglio di sé nel capitolo della scelta dei prodotti: “Abbiamo preso in esame le insalate in busta – premette Tozzi – e la varietà in termini di tipologie ha ottenuto il miglior giudizio possibile, cioè ‘molto ampia’, dal 93% dei mystery shopper, con il restante 7% che l’ha definita ‘ampia’. Queste due opzioni hanno prevalso anche con riguardo alla varietà dei formati, ‘molto ampia’ per il 67% e ‘ampia’ per il 33 per cento. In più della meta delle visite, precisamente il 53%, l’assortimento di insalate in busta è sembrato costituito in egual misura da marche del distributore e brand industriali. A certificare però la continua e accorta manutenzione dell’offerta presente a scaffale è la totale assenza di referenze scadute nell’ambito della categoria, così come non sono state segnalate insalate in busta con scadenza ormai prossima, cioè entro un giorno”.
LA CONCLUSIONE DELL’ESPERIENZA D’ACQUISTO
Insomma, un’autentica marcia trionfale quella di Iper La grande i, che però incontra qualche piccolo ostacolo nella conclusione del percorso d’acquisto. “Se volessimo individuare una possibile area di miglioramento nell’ambito di una performance comunque eccellente – evidenzia Tozzi – allora forse dovremmo guardare alle casse, percepite come complessivamente pulite e ordinate dal 94 dei mystery shopper, ma con il rimanente 6% non proprio soddisfatto”.
Va detto innanzitutto che il personale di cassa è promosso nell’aspetto – ritenuto ‘impeccabile’ nel 20% dei casi, ‘molto curato’ in un altro 47% e ‘curato’ nel rimanente 33% – ed è sempre in divisa, con in più il badge nel 53% delle visite. In quest’area la mascherina è indossata correttamente da tutti gli addetti, cosa che fa il paio con la totalità di postazioni dotate di un divisore in Plexiglass tra cliente e cassiera, soluzione ormai consueta in Gdo. “Qualcosa in più forse è possibile fare in termini di interazione – sottolinea Tozzi – perché se è il 73% dei cassieri ha salutato e sorriso al mystery shopper, ce n’è un altro 20% che ha solo salutato e un 7% che non ha fatto né l’una né l’altra cosa. E lo stesso è sostanzialmente accaduto al termine delle operazioni di pagamento, con il 67% degli addetti che ha salutato e sorriso, il 27% che ha solo salutato e un 6% che non ha messo in pratica nessuno dei due comportamenti. Non sorprende, quindi, che a ringraziare per la spesa effettuata sia stato il 73% del personale di cassa, un dato importante ma passibile di miglioramento”.
Qualche traccia di questa conclusione non sempre impeccabile dell’esperienza di acquisto si ritrova nelle valutazioni finali, che però riflettono anche la cura messa da Iper La grande i sugli altri fronti, a cominciare dalla diligente adozione di una serie di misure volte a contenere il rischio contagio: “Il 27% dei mystery shopper – chiarisce Tozzi – ha avuto la percezione di trovarsi in un ambiente ‘sicurissimo’, a fronte di un 33% che ha preferito l’opzione ‘molto sicuro’ e di un 40% che si è orientato su quella ‘sicuro’. Nessuno ha quindi ha avuto una percezione di scarsa sicurezza ed è giusto rimarcarlo. Quanto al Net Happiness Score, cioè l’indicatore che richiede al mystery shopper di riferire la sua sensazione dell’atmosfera che si respirava nel punto vendita e quindi se le persone che vi lavoravano gli sono sembrate ‘felici’, il +41% è una soglia davvero alta e inferiore, nell’ambito delle catene finora oggetto dell’analisi realizzata da BVA Doxa in esclusiva per Food, solo al +60% di Esselunga”.
Va ricordato che il punteggio finale è la differenza tra i voti molto positivi (9 e 10) e quelli molto negativi (da 6 in giù) che in questo caso arrivano al 6 per cento. E sono gli stessi shopper che hanno segnalato una chiusura poco gratificante del percorso d’acquisto, con cassieri che non hanno né salutato, né sorriso. Un’ulteriore riprova di quanto il congedo alle casse pesi nella percezione e influisca sulla valutazione di un’insegna nel suo insieme.
IL CONFRONTO CON I COMPETITOR
Ma qual è il giudizio complessivo dell’esperienza vissuta nel punto vendita Iper La grande i? E come si colloca la catena rispetto a Esselunga e Bennet, competitor già analizzati a suo tempo da BVA Doxa con la stessa metodologia? “Nel caso di Iper La grande i – afferma Tozzi – le cinque stelle, sigillo di un’esperienza molto positiva, raccolgono il 47% di preferenze e una percentuale identica di mystery shopper opta per le quattro stelle”. Solo il 6% assegna due stelle, ma abbiamo visto essere questa una netta minoranza di ‘scontenti’ ricorrente nella ricerca. Bennet, l’altro specialista del format ipermercato, aveva ottenuto risultati sicuramente positivi ma mediamente più bassi. Ad attribuire le cinque stelle era stato infatti il 27% dei mystery shopper, mentre un altro 40% ne aveva indicate quattro, con poi il 20% attestato sulle tre stelle e un 13% fermo a due stelle.
“Nel caso di Iper La grande i – osserva Tozzi – l’equa suddivisione dei giudizi tra cinque e quattro stelle, opzioni scelta ciascuna dal 47% dei mystery shopper, è una perfetta esemplificazione dei risultati della ricerca, mentre nel caso di Esselunga si ravvisava una maggiore polarizzazione sull’eccellenza. In quel caso, infatti, il punteggio massimo era stato scelto dal 53% dei mystery shopper, ma le quattro stelle scendevano al 20%”. Rimarcate queste differenze, non c’è dubbio che entrambe le insegne abbiano ampiamente superato l’esame dei mystery shopper, proponendo esperienze d’acquisto di assoluto valore, che rappresenteranno dei punti di riferimento nel prosieguo dell’indagine. Il Mystery Shopper realizzato da BVA Doxa in esclusiva per Food, dedicato questo mese a Iper La grande i, conferma le ottime performance delle grandi superfici nell’andare incontro alle attese della clientela non solo in termini di assortimento – il che appare scontato –, ma anche di immagine e percepito del punto vendita, qualità del servizio offerto dal personale, adozione di accorgimenti resi necessari dal perdurare della pandemia. Nel caso dell’insegna del Gruppo Finiper, tutto ciò è svolto con una precisione che si traduce in un risultato clamoroso, migliore sotto alcuni aspetti persino di quanto fatto registrare da Esselunga, che pure si attestava su un livello di assoluta eccellenza (vedi Food 11-2021, pag. 34). Un testa a testa che – al netto delle differenze tra le due catene in termini di caratteristiche del concept e numerosità dei negozi – mette in luce un approccio sistematico e ‘industriale’ al tema della qualità complessiva del ‘prodotto’ punto vendita.

GLI INDICATORI SINTETICI
L’indagine su Iper La grande i è stata realizzata da BVA Doxa lo scorso novembre su un campione di 15 ipermercati situati per la quasi totalità in Lombardia, tranne due superfici collocate rispettivamente in Veneto e Piemonte. In verità stavolta parlare di campione appare riduttivo, visto che nel complesso la catena conta 21 ipermercati e un superstore. “Il primo dato che balza all’occhio – dichiara Andrea Tozzi, Research Manager di BVA Doxa – è il livello elevatissimo dei risultati ottenuti, con cinque negozi che vanno dai 96 a 99 punti nell’Overall Score, cioè l’indicatore sintetico che fotografa la valutazione complessiva data dal mystery shopper. Uno solo dei 15 iper visitati non ha guadagnato giudizi ottimi e ha quindi influito negativamente sulla media, che però si attesta comunque su un lusinghiero 89%, cioè due punti in più rispetto a Esselunga e cinque lunghezze sopra il risultato di Bennet, altro operatore comparabile” (vedi Food 9-2021 pag. 44, ndr).
Più nel dettaglio, in fatto di prodotti a scaffale Iper La grande i incassa sempre il massimo del punteggio, ma emerge benissimo anche sotto il profilo della tenuta degli addetti (90%), dell’interazione di reparto e delle misure anti-Covid (entrambi a quota 87%). “Relativamente all’ultimo ambito – continua Tozzi – il 20% dei mystery shopper segnala la presenza all’ingresso di un’apparecchiatura per misurare automaticamente la temperatura. Nel 93% dei casi, sempre all’entrata del negozio sono posizionati dei dispenser per gel disinfettante, tutti giudicati funzionanti ‘bene’ o ‘molto bene’ e per il 93% complessivamente puliti. L’80% delle volte, inoltre, i dispenser sono visibili anche in altri spazi della superficie commerciale, come la zona casse, dove nell’87% delle visite effettuate per conto di BVA Doxa è stata fatta rispettare la distanza interpersonale di sicurezza di un metro tra le persone in fila per pagare, contro il 73% di Bennet e il 53% di Esselunga”.
L’AMPIEZZA DELL’OFFERTA
Tornando all’inizio del percorso d’acquisto, tutti i mystery shopper entrando hanno avuto la percezione di un punto vendita complessivamente pulito e per il 93% di loro anche complessivamente ordinato. Iper La grande i fa il pieno di consensi con riguardo alla voce dell’aspetto dell’addetto di reparto (100% complessivamente curato) e sempre in divisa, accompagnata dal badge nel 40% dei casi. La mascherina indossata in modo corretto appare una costante (93%), inoltre tutti gli addetti a cui il mystery shopper si sono rivolti erano intenti a sistemare prodotti a scaffale e ben l’87% ha ascoltato con attenzione la domanda posta. Nel rispondere il 33% ha dato l’idea di impegnarsi molto, a fronte di un 60% che si è impegnato abbastanza e di un 7% percepito come meno partecipe. Tutti hanno però mantenuto un’espressione sorridente e disponibile.
L’insegna dà comunque il meglio di sé nel capitolo della scelta dei prodotti: “Abbiamo preso in esame le insalate in busta – premette Tozzi – e la varietà in termini di tipologie ha ottenuto il miglior giudizio possibile, cioè ‘molto ampia’, dal 93% dei mystery shopper, con il restante 7% che l’ha definita ‘ampia’. Queste due opzioni hanno prevalso anche con riguardo alla varietà dei formati, ‘molto ampia’ per il 67% e ‘ampia’ per il 33 per cento. In più della meta delle visite, precisamente il 53%, l’assortimento di insalate in busta è sembrato costituito in egual misura da marche del distributore e brand industriali. A certificare però la continua e accorta manutenzione dell’offerta presente a scaffale è la totale assenza di referenze scadute nell’ambito della categoria, così come non sono state segnalate insalate in busta con scadenza ormai prossima, cioè entro un giorno”.
LA CONCLUSIONE DELL’ESPERIENZA D’ACQUISTO
Insomma, un’autentica marcia trionfale quella di Iper La grande i, che però incontra qualche piccolo ostacolo nella conclusione del percorso d’acquisto. “Se volessimo individuare una possibile area di miglioramento nell’ambito di una performance comunque eccellente – evidenzia Tozzi – allora forse dovremmo guardare alle casse, percepite come complessivamente pulite e ordinate dal 94 dei mystery shopper, ma con il rimanente 6% non proprio soddisfatto”.

“DMX is not the greatest rapper alive, I understand that. Everybody talks about Tupac. Everybody talks about Biggie. Everybody talks about Jay Z, Andre 3000, Eminem, Kendrick — got it. But DMX spoke to me in a way that no other rapper did. DMX was our heavy metal.”
He continued, “I grew up with DMX in my ears the whole time. Listen, I would be blessed, I would honor his memory in such a way, and I would be honored and humbled. From your lips to God’s ears… We’ll see.”

DMX’s story would be powerful to portray on the big screen. From 7 to 14, he was in and out of institutions. At 14 years old, he was tricked into using crack by a trusted older mentor.
In 2019, the rapper told GQ about abuse from his mom when he was six years old, “[My mother] beat two teeth out of my f**king mouth with a broom.”
In his autobiography, he also revealed his father was completely absent from his life and never even called for his birthday.
DMX, whose legal name is Earl Simmons, battled substance abuse for years and went to rehab several times. His most recent inpatient treatment was in 2019.
That said, the rapper poured his pain into his music, delivering classic hip hop records and sold 74 million records worldwide.
On April 9, 2021, DMX died due to complications from a drug overdose.

DMX’s story would be powerful to portray on the big screen. From 7 to 14, he was in and out of institutions. At 14 years old, he was tricked into using crack by a trusted older mentor.
In 2019, the rapper told GQ about abuse from his mom when he was six years old, “[My mother] beat two teeth out of my f**king mouth with a broom.”
In his autobiography, he also revealed his father was completely absent from his life and never even called for his birthday.
DMX, whose legal name is Earl Simmons, battled substance abuse for years and went to rehab several times. His most recent inpatient treatment was in 2019.
That said, the rapper poured his pain into his music, delivering classic hip hop records and sold 74 million records worldwide.
On April 9, 2021, DMX died due to complications from a drug overdose.
