A Blind person can’t see so they must be unable to read books or watch television, for instance. That we typically use our eyes to read books or watch TV is a signal that, without the sense of sight, the ability to do these things is seemingly impossible. That’s a problem: more than ableist, this sentiment shows a profound ignorance of accessibility and assistive technologies—which, given technology’s capabilities nowadays, can feel downright insulting.
So it goes with building and working with machinery. At first blush, the idea that Blind people could work with CNC machines seems ludicrous because, of course, one couldn’t operate the machines if they can’t see the controls. Such logic follows conventional wisdom. The faculty at Davis Technical College is putting this misconception to bed by running a CNC machining program specifically designed for Blind and low vision students who want to get into the machining industry. At the completion of the program, students earn a certificate and are ready for employment. The certification also means they are halfway to an Associates degree as well.
“With this program, our goals were to expand access to new types of manufacturing jobs and trainings to the blind and visually impaired community and to help integrate these students into machining roles at the companies where we are already placing our CNC Machining students,” said Geoff Vincent, a CNC Machining instructor at the school, in a recent interview with me conducted over email.
The overarching goal of the program, Vincent told me, is to “show [CNC machining] employers that these students are just as capable, smart, skilled, and ready to get to work.” Davis’ program is the only one of its kind in the country, and its origin story is one of diversity and inclusion. The school’s president and chief executive, Darrin Brush, learned of a Blind machinist in Seattle and took another instructor, Troy, to meet them. After talking with the person and touring the facility, Brush and Troy resolved to “create a program to teach this [Blind and low vision] community machining” upon returning to Utah. The school consulted with members of the Division of Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired in Salt Lake City, who would tinker around the machine shop and advise on necessary safeguards and accommodations. Vincent said Davis “[works] with the students to see what modifications they need” like touchscreens so someone can zoom into controls. “We were adamant about creating a real-world environment that would mirror what the students would experience in professional shops [with] small modifications,” he said.
Vincent explained roughly 10% of the Blind community is fully blind; this means those in this group do not perceive light. The other 90% does have light perception. Vincent shared an anecdote about a student who’s 98% Blind; she uses a tablet with a Braille keyboard to help her operate the machines. Text changes as the screen changes, and “she can plug in measuring equipment and read it back in Braille,” he said.
“The interesting thing about machining is that none of us can really see what’s happening in the machine anyway, you have to listen,” Vincent said. “Many Blind and visually impaired students have an amazing ability to hear what’s happening in the machine, often catching specific noises—and therefore problems—that many of us wouldn’t have noticed. The students are also trained to feel the parts in the machine to ensure smooth edges.”
An integral component of the CNC program’s success is Autodesk. Vincent said the company’s contribution to the CNC program comes by way of its Fusion 360 software, which he described as “way more accessible than other [CAD] programs we have at the school.” Vincent said of Autodesk’s solution: “As we train the students on Autodesk Fusion 360, they’re learning the tool they’ll be using in future careers. We incorporated touch screen monitors into the shop so the students can zoom in on the screen to use the software, hovering over certain areas to learn about different functionalities.” He added, coupled with Windows’ speech recognition technology, students can control Fusion 360 through what he called “audible commands.”
Feedback on the CNC program from Davis Tech students has been overwhelmingly positive. One such participant is Marley Passey, who said in a statement machining is an area of great interest and she “leapt at the chance” to be part of the school’s pilot. While Passey was initially skittish at running the machines and using measuring tools, the confidence and skills gained from the program have inspired her to “find success just like any sighted machine worker” in the field. Passey said “the sky is the limit” and hopes someday to work in auto manufacturing, the aerospace industry, or even art.
“I gained so much from the CNC Enhanced program that I never would have thought possible otherwise,” she said.
As for the future, Vincent believes it is bright for Davis’ unique program. They modified the class curriculum and began integrating the Blind and low vision students into the CNC Enhanced course last month. In addition to the three original students in the pilot, Vincent noted there will be two more joining at the start of the next term.
“Our success in the CNC Machining program shows the possibilities for creating similar training opportunities in other focus areas here at Davis Tech, including composites, automation or robotics,” Vincent said. “When you can see what these blind and visually impaired students can do, the list of what they can’t accomplish is miniscule. Given advancements in technology, the barrier to entry is growing smaller by the day and I’m excited to see what lies ahead for these incredible students.”

Marchin’ Forward is a group show that puts forth the artists’ positive outlook despite the ongoing crises of the world today through their work.
In the midst of the worldwide pandemic and economic constraints caused between different countries, the artists’ seek to find a silver lining and a reason to keep marching forward, so to speak, towards a more hopeful future.
“Kaleidoscope”
Olivia d’Aboville

Kaleidoscope is a fitting title to describe the works included in Olivia d’Aboville’s ninth solo exhibition, composed of works that feature her signature textured fabrics — fragmented pieces of silk stitched together and manipulated through shibori and appliqué techniques — that explode into a prismatic sea of colors.
D’Aboville has always used Philippine silk as one of her mediums of choice, but the show is a departure from her usual collections typically infused with elegance, movement, and flow. These works are instead covered in its entirety with a smattering of fragmented and distorted pieces of silk that come together to make a whole, giving each new piece a bolder feel, with the illusion of fraction, distortion, and an eruption of textures and hues.
The works were inspired by a frenzied yet fulfilling period for the artist, which kept her busy at home with her family. D’Aboville relates these frenetic works to her experience as a mother during the pandemic, which she describes as chaotic, overwhelming, but nonetheless beautiful and exciting. These musings take shape in the work, with d’Aboville layering textiles upon textiles, resulting in works that are both unrestrained yet methodical in its manipulation of the artist’s chosen mediums.
The stitched together layers of fabric is d’Aboville’s attempt to stitch fragments of her life together and create something meaningful out of the waves of new feelings and experiences that washed over her during this period. They’re also a subtle an ode to being a mother and the tumultuous feelings that come with the role.
“Where We Land”

Where We Land is a series of works inspired by Virginia Woolf’s To The Lighthouse. Visual artist Tammy De Roca portrays specific memories progressing in motion, captured and relived over and over. Standing from a single viewpoint, the memory split into different iterations. The said past event is then reconstructed, affecting a present experience, to create a new perspective.
“Therefore, memories are a series of reoccurring events on a personal timeline that are altered slightly with each reconstruction.” (Lamb, H. 2014)
De Roca explores how textures build images through paintings, sculptures, and other forms. She continues to study and experiment on how our perception of appearances and images are challenged or supported by what textures represent.
Citing Elaine Navas and Mark Rothko as recent influences, she creates powerful, highly textured works of art that emphasize movement and flow. With regards to early inspiration, De Roca mentions surrealist and hyperrealist works, especially those by Camille Dela Rosa, Jon Jaylo, and of course, Ronald Ventura. She also mentions Filipina artists like Yasmin Sison and Geraldine Javier as favorites.

Marchin’ Forward is a group show that puts forth the artists’ positive outlook despite the ongoing crises of the world today through their work.
In the midst of the worldwide pandemic and economic constraints caused between different countries, the artists’ seek to find a silver lining and a reason to keep marching forward, so to speak, towards a more hopeful future.
“Kaleidoscope”
Olivia d’Aboville

Kaleidoscope is a fitting title to describe the works included in Olivia d’Aboville’s ninth solo exhibition, composed of works that feature her signature textured fabrics — fragmented pieces of silk stitched together and manipulated through shibori and appliqué techniques — that explode into a prismatic sea of colors.
D’Aboville has always used Philippine silk as one of her mediums of choice, but the show is a departure from her usual collections typically infused with elegance, movement, and flow. These works are instead covered in its entirety with a smattering of fragmented and distorted pieces of silk that come together to make a whole, giving each new piece a bolder feel, with the illusion of fraction, distortion, and an eruption of textures and hues.
The works were inspired by a frenzied yet fulfilling period for the artist, which kept her busy at home with her family. D’Aboville relates these frenetic works to her experience as a mother during the pandemic, which she describes as chaotic, overwhelming, but nonetheless beautiful and exciting. These musings take shape in the work, with d’Aboville layering textiles upon textiles, resulting in works that are both unrestrained yet methodical in its manipulation of the artist’s chosen mediums.
The stitched together layers of fabric is d’Aboville’s attempt to stitch fragments of her life together and create something meaningful out of the waves of new feelings and experiences that washed over her during this period. They’re also a subtle an ode to being a mother and the tumultuous feelings that come with the role.
“Where We Land”

Where We Land is a series of works inspired by Virginia Woolf’s To The Lighthouse. Visual artist Tammy De Roca portrays specific memories progressing in motion, captured and relived over and over. Standing from a single viewpoint, the memory split into different iterations. The said past event is then reconstructed, affecting a present experience, to create a new perspective.
“Therefore, memories are a series of reoccurring events on a personal timeline that are altered slightly with each reconstruction.” (Lamb, H. 2014)
De Roca explores how textures build images through paintings, sculptures, and other forms. She continues to study and experiment on how our perception of appearances and images are challenged or supported by what textures represent.
Citing Elaine Navas and Mark Rothko as recent influences, she creates powerful, highly textured works of art that emphasize movement and flow. With regards to early inspiration, De Roca mentions surrealist and hyperrealist works, especially those by Camille Dela Rosa, Jon Jaylo, and of course, Ronald Ventura. She also mentions Filipina artists like Yasmin Sison and Geraldine Javier as favorites.

There was “True Grit,” a traditional oater showcasing an Oscar-winning performance from the Western’s greatest star, John Wayne. The buddy movie “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” offered Paul Newman and Robert Redford with a mixture of ’60s-style irony and cool. Italian filmmaker Sergio Leone’s latest spaghetti Western, “Once Upon a Time in the West,” came over from Europe to roil the genre’s conventions.
And there was director Sam Peckinpah’s “The Wild Bunch.” No one had ever seen anything like its opening and closing shootouts — bloody and balletic with explosions erupting and bodies flying in slow motion. Coming during the war in Vietnam and political violence at home, its visceral scenes overshadowed a multilayered story about loyalty and betrayal, sin and redemption, the past versus the future. Critics were divided over whether it was an outstanding film or the year’s worst.
In his detailed and passionately argued history of “The Wild Bunch,” writer W.K. Stratton takes the debate to a higher level and convincingly positions the film as the best Western ever made — and among the greatest of movies.
Stratton collects the kinds of elements required for a lively movie backstory: a talented if irascible director, quirky cast and crew members, a difficult location shoot and a controversial reception by moviegoers and critics. Best of all, he recounts how an idea becomes a film and the creative, economic and fate-driven roadblocks it faces.
A stuntman, Roy N. Sickner, imagined a story about gringo outlaws robbing a train in the United States and escaping to Mexico, its climax a massive shootout. Screenwriter Walon Green drew on his own love of Mexican history and culture while shaping the story. Both Sickner and Green wanted their wild bunch to be tough outlaws who lived by a code of honor, the Mexico where they find love and death as free of movie cliches as possible.
That was a goal for Peckinpah, too, when he reworked the script. Another aficionado of Mexico and its people, the director cast stars of Mexican cinema for small but memorable roles. He also sought to present them as characters in a broader spectrum rather than stereotypes.
Within a month of its release Warner Bros.-Seven Arts ordered cuts — not to ease the controversial violence in “The Wild Bunch” but to make the movie shorter for more screenings each day, the kind of decision that sent Peckinpah into a rage. In later years, TV showings would provide a sanitized version. Not until 1995 was a restored version rereleased to fresh acclaim.

The project receiving Commissioned program funding is season two of Love on the Spectrum, from Northern Pictures and the creative team of director/producer Cian O’Clery, producer Jenni Wilks and executive producer Karina Holden for Australia’s ABC. The series also streamed its first season on Netflix.

Founded in 1981 by Ken Witmer, the company was purchased by Kevin and Terry Schlinkmann in 1992. In December 2021 it was acquired by Wisconsin River Partners (WRP), a private investment group focused on helping local companies grow. (See: About the company – below.)
“As part of the purchase price WRP will finance the additional expansion of the building and equipment to continue our growth pattern,” said Witmer Furniture President Kevin Schlinkmann. “The ultimate goal in the coming years is to double our capacity while keeping our quality standards.”
Well-known for building quality solid wood furniture at an affordable price, Witmer is ranked 263 in the FDMC 300, an annual ranking of the largest wood products manufacturers in North America.
“All of our product is solid wood, with English dovetail drawer, has a catalyzed lacquer finish and full access drawer glides – items that are normally seen only at higher price points.”
Custom production Furniture is all made to order. “We do not stock any items,” Schlinkmann said. “In addition, all of our lines are available in several wood species, several color options and with several hardware options as well. Our customers can purchase a bed for example, in a different wood than the dealer shows on their floor and pick one of several colors as well.”
While each piece of furniture manufactured is bench built, the company utilizes state-of-the-art saw optimizing, CNC moulding and CNC machining centers.
One of the factory workhorses is the Weinig Powermat 700 for producing S4S and other parts.
Witmer runs two production batches per day. “Each production batch is organized by collection, then wood species, then color, if possible, to get the best flow possible,” Schlinkmann explained.
At the company’s 150,000-square-foot manufacturing facility, a Weinig automated saw system scans each board, optimizes and rips to size based on the production batch. At the second automated saw, the board is marked for defects, scanned again and chopped to the optimal length. An automated system labels each board with a part number and routing code.
An important part of the process is the moulding and planing operation, including a Weinig six-head CNC moulder for producing S4S and other wood parts. “All of our cases have solid wood tops, drawer faces, face frames and trim with domestic plywood for the sides for stability,” he noted.
The plywood is first cut to size on a Holzma or Biesse CNC beam saw. Also integral to the manufacturing process are two Holz-Her CNC routers, including a five-axis that “machines all of the necessary parts.”
CNC technology, including these Holz-Her routers, is integral to the production process.
Parts are next pocket screwed using one of the several Castle machines in the facility. Each piece is then hand-assembled before finishing, with stain, sealer and a catalyzed lacquer applied to each piece. “After finishing, drawers are inserted, doors are installed, and all necessary hardware is installed. Each piece then goes through our QC standards and is then shipped to our customers,” Schlinkmann explained.
“Currently we are finalizing plans for physical building expansion, and improving our finishing line, which will include new pumps guns and robotic sprayers. In addition, we are continually researching equipment that can increase our capacity, improve efficiencies or better our product,” he added.
Recent investments in technology include a CNC router and moulder. According to Schlinkmann, “ROI is analyzed for each investment and a ratio of at least 5:1 would be expected.”
Under “normal” circumstances, Schlinkmann said, “We practice lean manufacturing. We receive raw material inventory on a weekly basis and carry minimal stock. However, with the current supply chain, we are purchasing and inventorying everything we can get our hands on to minimize supply disruptions.”
The company is also environmentally sustainable, and partners with lumber companies that practice forest stewardship. “We purchase items and most of our suppliers are from a close geographical area, which minimizes our carbon footprint,” Schlinkmann added.

Challenges and opportunities As with many manufacturers, Witmer Furniture has dealt with its share of issues since the onset of the pandemic including facility and customer closures, and supply chain disruptions, in particular the availability of certain species and rising cost of materials.
“At times we have struggled, but we continue to provide a safe work atmosphere for our employees, we continue to deliver more product on a weekly basis than we ever have, and we are working every day to lower our record backlogs,” Schlinkmann said.
With that in mind, he added, “2022 sales will exceed 2021 simply due to our backlog and our increased capacity. We are currently shipping 10 percent more than we did in 2021, we are in the process of adding a second shift, which will greatly increase our output as well as a building expansion and increase in equipment purchases. Our goal is to double our output in the not too distant future.”
The company also announced plans to launch two product lines this year that were delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We see opportunities to grow with our existing customer base as we will be able to ship more product to them. Domestic shipping rates, though they have increased, are substantially less than container rates which level the playing field with the imports. In addition, we have several new customers waiting to come on line this year.
“If we can continue to add new employees and train them to maintain our standards, we feel things will look good moving forward.”
