IFC Films has acquired U.S. distribution rights and HanWay Films also closed a multi-territory deal with MUBI for UK, Ireland, Italy, Latin America and Turkey. Additional deals include Metropolitan Films (France), The Searchers (Benelux), Scanbox (Scandinavia), M2 (Eastern Europe), A-One (Baltics), Front Row (Middle East) and Shaw (Singapore). The deal with IFC was negotiated between HanWay Films MD Gabrielle Stewart with IFC Film’s President Arianna Bocco and SVP of Acquisitions Scott Shooman for the Bonnie Productions feature.

Lenkiewicz delves into the complexities of a relationship between a single mother and daughter in Hot Milk where the heat and atmosphere of Almería become an epic canvas for this intimate exploration of sex, love and the bonds that tie us all together.
Rose (Shaw) and her daughter Sofia (Buckley) travel to the Spanish seaside town of Almería to consult with the shamanic Dr Gomez, a physician who could possibly hold the cure to Rose’s mystery illness, which has left her bound to a wheelchair. But in the sultry atmosphere of this sun-bleached town Sofia, who has been trapped by her mother’s illness all her life, finally starts to shed her inhibitions, enticed by the persuasive charms of enigmatic traveller Ingrid (Krieps). This fantastical contemporary classic by visionary director, William of the Bullhas captured the imaginations of audiences everywhere. However, del Toro’s imaginings prove downright macabre, at times. Pan’s Labyrinth poses as a coming-of-age story with a backdrop of war, meaning there is an underlying threat at every turn. However, nothing can quite prepare a first-time viewer for the utter terror of the iconic Pale Man. A fleshy humanoid creature that can only be likened to the weird Voldemort fetus in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Part II), the Pale Man’s eye-less face, combined with his eye-full hands, has since become a staple of body horror and costume design that feels very reminiscent of Hellraiser‘s Cenobites.

The Assistant (2019)
Kitty Green‘s most popular film to date is one that will make your stomach turn. We follow Kate, a recent graduate who has landed an assistant job in the entertainment industry. However, when she wishes to report an incident to HR, a slow but sinister nightmare begins to unfold. The Assistant is masterfully subtle in its writing and premise, but the horrors of misogyny and bureaucracy are tenfold. Green’s film reminds us of the everyday atrocities that occur against women, especially in the entertainment industry. It’s a grueling watch but a necessary one, as we see come truly gripping performances that are careful never to escape the realm of reality.

So, hop aboard the Jake Gyllenhaal train, because this is the first of four movies that he stars in on this list. In Denis Villeneuve‘s PrisonersGyllenhaal plays a detective in search of a missing girl and her friend. However, the girl’s father, played by the wonderful Hugh Jackmandecides to take matters into his own hands. This grim and depressing thriller proves a horrifying study of humanity, asking: how far will we go to save someone we love? The answers that movies poses are uncomfortable and thought-provoking. Furthermore, in a similar vein to The Lovely Bonesthe seemingly harmless suburban setting is twisted and warped into a place of sordidness and danger. You won’t be happy while watching, but it’s a guarantee that – if you haven’t seen it already – you will be on the edge of your seat the entire time.
Come and See (1985)
Set during the Nazi occupation of Belarus, this story opens our eyes to every single horrible aspect of war and dictatorship that you could imagine. We follow the treacherous journey of Flyora, who endures unimaginable amounts of pain, loss, and disillusionment. Come and See features scenes of such brutality – particularly towards women – that will keep you awake at night. This tragic and grueling cinematic experience is an exhibition of the dangers of fascist ideologies and the sick and warped actions that a mob mentality can create. The final moments of the film prove a very poignant exploration of the nature of evil, and whether it is born or made.

This film is enough to make anyone paranoid and distrust the system, as Christine’s protests against the authorities land her in nothing short of a nightmare. This woman is subjected to a gross miscarriage of justice, forced to parent a stranger, and taken to a psych-ward. If that wasn’t disturbing enough, this movie is also based on real-life events.

The second Gyllenhaal entry on the list, this compelling thriller follows an odd-ball and recluse that will literally stop at nothing to gain the fame and recognition he feels he deserves. Much like films such as Black Swan and Whiplash, Nightcrawler is a tale of bloodthirsty ambition, focusing on the protagonist, Louis Bloom, who prowls the night for crime footage to sell to news stations. It’s not long before things take a very exploitative and twisted turn. We see Gyllenhaal masterfully lose himself in, probably, the darkest role of his career. The lengths he goes to for fame and recognition become more and more extreme, and we are chilled by the amount of exploitation this industry can have.

A relatively small, unknown Australian film, Candy is a love story that invites us into the all-consuming world of drug abuse. Starring Heath Ledger and Abbie Cornishthis movie features some incredibly raw and heart-wrenching moments. Candy and Dan are young and in love – but, unfortunately, they love heroin even more. It is distressing enough to watch these two fall into the pits of addiction, but it’s even more disheartening to witness their fruitless attempts to crawl out of it. Like Trainspotting, Candy does not glamorize or hold back in the slightest, reminding us that the results of addiction yield horrifically tragic results.

Gyllenhaal does double duty playing two roles and things get messy and sinister the more the two men meddle in each other’s lives. Although the true meaning behind the imagery and symbolism of this film can prove highly allusive and open to interpretation, that doesn’t stop this movie from leaving a lasting impression. Oh, and as if the strange clone-twin treachery wasn’t unsettling enough, if you’re arachnophobic this will be a living nightmare for you. This movie has a lot of spiders, some of them unreasonably huge and detailed.
Old Boy (2003)
From the get-go, this one gets under your skin. The viewer is introduced to a very Kafka-esque plot-line, as we see a man imprisoned for years and years, with no explanation as to why. The unusual set design, the dystopian eeriness of the prison, and its slight mimicry of a seedy motel room give an element of the Uncanny Valley. This modern classic of betrayal and revenge becomes more and more gruesome to the point of insanity – featuring, probably, one of the best villains in movie history. Not to mention, Old Boy‘s final twist is enough to make anyone want to barf in utter horror.

Now researchers at MIT have been able to study exactly what happens as these crystal grains form during an extreme deformation process, at the tiniest scales, down to a few nanometers across. The new findings could lead to improved ways of processing to produce better, more consistent properties such as hardness and toughness.
The new findings, made possible by detailed analysis of images from a suite of powerful imaging systems, are reported today in the journal Nature Materials, in a paper by former MIT postdoc Ahmed Tiamiyu (now assistant professor at the University of Calgary); MIT professors Christopher Schuh, Keith Nelson, and James LeBeau; former student Edward Pang; and current student Xi Chen.
“In the process of making a metal, you are endowing it with a certain structure, and that structure will dictate its properties in service,” Schuh says. In general, the smaller the grain size, the stronger the resulting metal. Striving to improve strength and toughness by making the grain sizes smaller “has been an overarching theme in all of metallurgy, in all metals, for the past 80 years,” he says.
Metallurgists have long applied a variety of empirically developed methods for reducing the sizes of the grains in a piece of solid metal, generally by imparting various kinds of strain through deforming it in one way or another. But it’s not easy to make these grains smaller.
The primary method is called recrystallization, in which the metal is deformed and heated. This creates many small defects throughout the piece, which are “highly disordered and all over the place,” says Schuh, who is the Danae and Vasilis Salapatas Professor of Metallurgy.
When the metal is deformed and heated, then all those defects can spontaneously form the nuclei of new crystals. “You go from this messy soup of defects to freshly new nucleated crystals. And because they’re freshly nucleated, they start very small,” leading to a structure with much smaller grains, Schuh explains.
What’s unique about the new work, he says, is determining how this process takes place at very high speed and the smallest scales. Whereas typical metal-forming processes like forging or sheet rolling, may be quite fast, this new analysis looks at processes that are “several orders of magnitude faster,” Schuh says.
“We use a laser to launch metal particles at supersonic speeds. To say it happens in the blink of an eye would be an incredible understatement, because you could do thousands of these in the blink of an eye,” says Schuh.
Such a high-speed process is not just a laboratory curiosity, he says. “There are industrial processes where things do happen at that speed.” These include high-speed machining; high-energy milling of metal powder; and a method called cold spray, for forming coatings. In their experiments, “we’ve tried to understand that recrystallization process under those very extreme rates, and because the rates are so high, no one has really been able to dig in there and look systematically at that process before,” he says.
Using a laser-based system to shoot 10-micrometer particles at a surface, Tiamiyu, who carried out the experiments, “could shoot these particles one at a time, and really measure how fast they are going and how hard they hit,” Schuh says. Shooting the particles at ever-faster speeds, he would then cut them open to see how the grain structure evolved, down to the nanometer scale, using a variety of sophisticated microscopy techniques at the MIT.nano facility, in collaboration with microscopy specialists.
The result was the discovery of what Schuh says is a “novel pathway” by which grains were forming down to the nanometer scale. The new pathway, which they call nano-twinning assisted recrystallization, is a variation of a known phenomenon in metals called twinning, a particular kind of defect in which part of the crystalline structure flips its orientation. It’s a “mirror symmetry flip, and you end up getting these stripey patterns where the metal flips its orientation and flips back again, like a herringbone pattern,” he says. The team found that the higher the rate of these impacts, the more this process took place, leading to ever smaller grains as those nanoscale “twins” broke up into new crystal grains.
In the experiments they did using copper, the process of bombarding the surface with these tiny particles at high speed could increase the metal’s strength about tenfold. “This is not a small change in properties,” Schuh says, and that result is not surprising since it’s an extension of the known effect of hardening that comes from the hammer blows of ordinary forging. “This is sort of a hyper-forging type of phenomenon that we’re talking about.”
In the experiments, they were able to apply a wide range of imaging and measurements to the exact same particles and impact sites, Schuh says: “So, we end up getting a multimodal view. We get different lenses on the same exact region and material, and when you put all that together, you have just a richness of quantitative detail about what’s going on that a single technique alone wouldn’t provide.”
Because the new findings provide guidance about the degree of deformation needed, how fast that deformation takes place, and the temperatures to use for maximum effect for any given specific metals or processing methods, they can be directly applied right away to real-world metals production, Tiamiyu says. The graphs they produced from the experimental work should be generally applicable. “They’re not just hypothetical lines,” Tiamiyu says. For any given metals or alloys, “if you’re trying to determine if nanograins will form, if you have the parameters, just slot it in there” into the formulas they developed, and the results should show what kind of grain structure can be expected from given rates of impact and given temperatures.

This version of Most Dangerous Game (Prime Video) began life as episodic snippets on Quibi, the short attention span theater platform that was born and then died back in 2020. It was then part of the content haul snapped up by Roku after Quibi’s demise, where it did well enough to warrant the announcement of a second season. MDG also scored two Emmy nominations. For Prime, it’s cobbled together as a film, and acts as a kind of companion piece to Reachercreator Nick Santora’s other action series for the streamer.
The Gist: Dodge Tyner (Liam Hemsworth) is getting desperate. His fledgling construction business’s biggest gamble sits half-built and empty in downtown Detroit, and he’s leveraged every bit of debt and personal favor he and pregnant wife Val (Sarah Gadon) can manage. And then there are the headaches. Face-splitting episodes that make him pass out. They tell him it’s a brain tumor, and that he’s terminal. So when he comes into contact with Miles Sellars, an executive type who runs something called The Tiro Fund, Dodge is inclined to listen to Sellars’ unlikely sales pitch. He’s incredulous, but doesn’t immediately walk away. “You want them to hunt me?”
The game is simple. It’s Dodge against five hunters. 24 hours, worth 50 G’s for every hour he stays alive. Game play stays within the Detroit city limits. No blabbing about the game to loved ones or friends. No ID, no cash, no cops. And no guns, either. Hunters have to “get creative,” Sellars tells him. Also, crowds are his friend. “Hunters don’t want to kill you too publicly, or they wind up spending the rest of their lives in prison under the fake identities we set up for them.” The game begins. Dodge runs. And Sellars enters his surveillance hub. He’s now Plutarch Heavensbee, and Detroit is Dodge’s Hunger Games arena.
One by one, from the Renaissance Center to Little Caesars Arena to the Detroit Princess Riverboat, the hunters reveal themselves to their prey. Nixon (Chris Webster) is a persnickety psychopath who favors fancy blades. Reagan (Billy Burke) is more rough-and-tumble with his leather jacket and buck knife. And Carter (Jimmy Akingbola) – yes, their aliases are all presidents – wields a hammer and a grip of disguises. Also on the hunt are Kennedy (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) and LBJ (Patrick Garrow), and monitoring the action is Sellars’ “cleaner,” Connell (Aaron Poole), who keeps the game free of disruption.
As Val, along with Dodge’s best pal Looger (Zach Cherry), tries to locate her husband and determine how cash keeps falling into her bank account, Dodge proves more adept at escape and evasion than Sellars initially anticipated. He’s still desperate, but gets smarter about surviving with every close shave. And as the game goes on, he discovers even more about how he came to be a part of it in the first place.
What Movies Will It Remind You Of? If there’s an award for most adaptations of an original work, Richard Connell’s original 1924 short story “The Most Dangerous Game” is a contender. First up is the 1932 RKO Pictures version, starring Joel McCrea and Leslie Banks. (It’s also available on Prime Video.) But you could easily go with Hard Targeta John Woo-directed standout from Jean-Claude Van Damme’s ‘80s/’90s action library. Surviving the Game (1994) featured a fantastic cast in Rutger Hauer, Charles S. Dutton, Gary Busey, John C. McGinley, and Ice-T. And in 2020, The Hunt added a twist of satirical social criticism to the material while also functioning as a solid action thriller.
Performance Worth Watching: Zach Cherry, who plays Dylan on the Apple TV+ standout Severancedoesn’t have a whole lot to do in Dangerousappearing every now and again to further the plotting around Hemsworth. But he makes the most of his scenes, lending touches of humor and depth to a storyline that’s otherwise pretty one dimensional.
Memorable Dialogue: Christoph Waltz plays Tiro Fund executive/gamemaster Miles Sellars as a refined, MBA version of Hans Landa, his gleeful SS sociopath from Inglorious Basterds. And as such, he imbues Sellars’ corporate gobbledygook with some deliciously slithery diction. “Dodge, I am what you would call a facilitator. I make possible the natural progression of man’s innate desire to be challenged.”
Sex and Skin: None.
Our Take: As with the outsized personalities who hunt Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Running Man – “I love this saw; this saw’s a part of me and I’m gonna make it part of you!” – there’s fun to be had in Most Dangerous Game as we discover the quirks and stylistic flourishes of each hunter Dodge encounters. Chris Webster, who uses his natural British accent but is otherwise the same raging psycho he played in Reacherprobably has the most fun with Nixon and his blades, but Billy Burke’s bizarre southern drawl adds to the scenery, too. And Hemsworth is sturdy enough as Dodge; each time he escapes the clutches of his pursuers, he adds a lair of steely determination that sets up the next hunter showdown. A sequence set among the exiting crowd after a Red Wings game feels lifted from the opening moments of Drivebut is nevertheless tightly paced and edited, and includes one of Dodge’s best means of evading Sellars’ constant surveillance.
That Dangerous once and still exists as a short form television show doesn’t interfere too much with this movie version. An opening title and credits roll is conspicuously absent, and the only subplot is Val and Looger looking for answers about Dodge’s whereabouts. But because the hunt is really its only feature, Dangerous rides well on its momentum once the action finally starts. Waltz is also a highlight here. (He was nominated for an Emmy.) He keeps Sellars’ eccentric nature and blase acceptance of violence at a steady simmer, but does deliver a deliciously unhinged diatribe about the deadly game’s vaunted history dating back to the Roman Empire.
Our Call: STREAM IT. Most Dangerous Game doesn’t stray from the familiar beats of its oft-adapted source material, but delivers an economical stab at action pacing with mild thriller elements.

Es gibt Blogbeiträge, da weiß ich von vornherein, dass sie nicht viele Menschen lesen werden. Da kann ich mit unseren Reiseerfahrungen nicht das liefern, wonach die Leute suchen. Oder es geht um Regionen, nach denen die Leute von vornherein nicht suchen. In diesem Fall ist beides so, fürchte ich. Trotzdem juckt es mich auch ein Jahr nach unserem Kurztrip an die Nordsee immer noch, meine Erfahrungen über Butjadingen und die Wesermarsch zu veröffentlichen. Und weil das Stichwort „Butjadingen/Nordsee“ in meiner Instastory-Umfrage gewonnen hat (vor dem Magic Park Verden, den Gartencafés auf Usedom und dem Hotel-Resort am Bernsteinsee, die noch zur Auswahl standen), mache ich es jetzt einfach. Ha!
Butjadingen und die Wesermarsch: Was ist das überhaupt?
Das Ding ist, dass unser Kurztrip Butjadingen eigentlich nur gestreift hat. Überhaupt fand ich es sehr verwirrend, was in dieser Region nun wie heißt und wozu gehört. Deshalb beginne ich damit, das alles kurz aufzudröseln. Historisch ist das alles schrecklich interessant!
Diese Infotafel in Ovelgönne zeigt, um welche Region es geht. Sie wirbt für Fahrradreisen – und die müssen hier in der Tat eine wahre Freude sein!
Auch auf anderen Ebenen staune ich, wie eigentümlich die Gegend da oben an der westlichen Wesermündung ist. Nur ein paar Kilometer von unserer Haustür entfernt überquere ich denselben Fluss beinahe täglich. Nach gerade einmal zweieinhalb Stunden Fahrzeit über die Landstraßen flussaufwärts habe ich dagegen das Gefühl, in einem anderen Land zu stehen. Die Friesen, die die Wesermarsch kultivierten und im späteren Genpool-Mix der Neuzeit wohl auch heute noch dominieren, sind offenbar schon ein Schlag Menschen für sich. Und erst die Landschaft selber!
Die Wesermarsch an der Nordsee in Butjadingen ist eine eigentümliche Gegend.
Butjadingen: Landschaft, Ort, Reiseziel
Butjadingen ist keine Stadt, kein Ortsname. Eigentlich. Ursprünglich bezeichnet der Begriff „alles jenseits der Jade“. „Buten“ heißt auf Plattdeutsch draußen oder eben auch „da hinten irgendwo ganz abgelegen“. Die Mehrheit der Friesen siedelte westlich entlang der Nordsee bis weit ins heutige Holland.
Von Butjadingen aus geht es mitten hinein in den Nationalpark Niedersächsisches Wattenmeer.
Der Name Butjadingen hat sich festgesetzt für die Halbinsel, die Jadebusen und Weser bilden. (Betont wird übrigens auf der zweiten Silbe.) Nach einer Sturmflut im 14. Jahrhundert wurde die Gegend vorübergehend zur vollwertigen Insel. Das konnten die Bewohner durch Eindeichung wieder ändern. Die ehemalige Trennlinie bildet heute noch die Grenze zum Stadland im Süden.
Ein typisches altes Fischerhaus (allerdings in der Kreisstadt Brake – aus Butjadingen habe ich blöderweise nicht so viele Fotos).
1974 fasste man die kleinen Küstendörfer Langwarden, Burhave und Stollhamm zusammen, um den spärlich besiedelten Landstrich besser verwalten zu können. Butjadingen wurde der Name dieser neu entstandenen Gemeinde.
Unter diesem Label vermarktet sich seitdem auch der (eher verhaltene) Tourismus der Region. Touristisches Zentrum war und ist immer noch Burhave. Dort ploppt auch das Wort Butjadingen auf, wenn man es bei Google Maps sucht. Auch die beiden Nordseebäder Tossens und Fedderwardersiel sowie das Strandbad Eckwarderhörne gehören jedoch zur Gemeinde Butjadingen.

Region Wesermarsch
Die nächstgrößere Region – und das, was man eigentlich unserer Reise als Überschrift geben müsste – ist die Wesermarsch. Auch die hat wieder verschiedene Bedeutungsebenen.
Zunächst einmal erklärt die Wortbedeutung die geografische Beschaffenheit. Marsch ist Land, das sich nach der letzten Eiszeit vom Meer schied (durch natürliche oder menschengesteuerte Prozesse). Somit bezeichnet die Wesermarsch das Neuland links und eigentlich auch rechts der Weser. Da hat sich in den vergangenen Jahrtausenden und selbst in den letzten paar Jahrhunderten nämlich noch erstaunlich viel getan!
Wo heute Schafe grasen, war vor gar nicht allzu langer Zeit noch Meeresboden.
Es juckt mich schon wieder in den Fingern, hier vom mittelalterlichen Gau Rüstringen zu schreiben, vom Stedingerkrieg und vom generell komplizierten Verhältnis zum nahen Oldenburg und seinen Grafen. Das verkneife ich mir. Dafür gestatte ich mir aber den Hinweis, dass die gesamte Region bis 1773 über hundert Jahre lang unter dänischer Herrschaft stand.
In modernen Zeiten geht es eher um den Landkreis Wesermarsch. Der ist mehr oder weniger deckungsgleich mit der historischen beziehungsweise geografischen Region. Grob gesagt umfasst er das Gebiet nördlich von Bremen links der Weser bis zur Linie Oldenburg – Jadebusen.
Die gesamte Gegend ist laut Wikipedia “praktisch frei von jeder Industrie”. In Brake und Nordenham gibt es zumindest “Hafengedöns”.
Auf 825 Quadratkilometer kommen gerade einmal 88.500 Einwohner. Es gibt im Norden und Osten Niedersachsens spärlicher besiedelte Gegenden (etwa das Wendland). Aber hier im ländlichen Schaumburg zum Beispiel wohnen mehr als doppelt so viele Menschen pro Quadratkilometer.
Der Landkreis Wesermarsch umfasst neun Gemeinden. Eine von ihnen ist Butjadingen. Die drei anderen, mit denen wir auf unserem Kurztrip an die Nordsee Bekanntschaft schließen, sind das südlich davon gelegene Nordenham, das wiederum südliche Ovelgönne und die Kreisstadt Brake östlich davon an der Weser.
Bummel durch die Kleinstadt Brake. Sie ist Verwaltungssitz, aber nach Nordenham nur zweitgrößte Stadt im Landkreis Wesermarsch.
Butjadingen und die Wesermarsch mit Kleinkind und Teenager – und Oma
Anlass unserer Reise in die Wesermarsch ist der 17. Geburtstag meines großen Sohnes. Der absolviert ein Sozialpraktikum in Ovelgönne. Drei Wochen lang hilft er bei der Begleitung von Menschen mit Behinderungen. Währenddessen wohnt er zum ersten Mal in seinem Leben in einer WG auf dem Gelände der Einrichtung.

Sein Geburtstag fällt auf den vorletzten Tag seines Praktikums. Also schreibe ich seine Betreuerin an und verabrede mit ihr einen Überraschungsbesuch. Da es sich um einen Wochentag handelt, reisen wir in ungewohnter Besetzung an: die Oma, die kleine Schwester (fast zwei) und die Mama (also ich). Einen Nachmittag und Abend haben wir zusammen, bevor Janis am Folgetag vor der Heimreise noch eine Schicht absolvieren muss. Den müssen wir Besucher also in der Region noch rumkriegen.
Da liegt ein Ausflug an die Nordsee nahe. – So nahe dann aber auch wieder nicht, denn von Ovelgönne bis Butjadingen ist es fast eine Stunde Fahrzeit.
Unsere Reisegruppe: Oma, Geburtstagskind Janis, Franka und ich (und im Hintergrund die Weser in Brake).
Brake: Weserspaziergang mit Einkehr
Nachdem wir das Geburtstagskind begrüßt, angemessen gratuliert, die Einrichtung und sein Zimmer besichtigt haben, ist es erwartungsgemäß später Nachmittag. Deshalb fahren wir heute nur noch die zehn Minuten in die nahe Kreisstadt. Zeichnet man auf der Landkarte ein Viereck zwischen Wilhelmshaven, Bremerhaven, Bremen und Oldenburg, liegt Brake genau in dessen Mitte. Rund 15.000 Menschen wohnen hier.

Wir parken kostenlos an der Heukaje. Leider pladdert es, sodass unser Kleinkind sich unter die Plastikplane des Buggys rettet. Egal, der kleine Spielplatz an der Kaje hat ohnehin eher dekorativen Charakter.
Hübsch, aber maximal was für ältere Kinder.
Zu den Sehenswürdigkeiten von Brake zählt vor allem das „Schifffahrtsmuseum Unterweser“. (Es hat gute Kritiken. Bei dem Thema sind wir aber alle nicht allzu traurig, dass sich ein Besuch zeitlich heute nicht mehr lohnt. Mehr Infos gibt es auf der Museums-Homepage.)
Ich wäre schon gern mal reingegangen…
So beschränken wir uns auf einen Stadtbummel. Brake ist für uns ein ausgesprochen interessantes Städtchen. Wir schlendern an der Weser entlang, die sich hier zu einem mächtigen breiten Fluss entwickelt hat. Die schweren Flutschutztore beeindrucken uns.

Die Fußgängerzone ist hübsch, aber es herrscht viel Leerstand. Es ist wohl wie überall: Die jungen Leute gehen lieber in die großen Städte.

Zum Abendessen habe ich zur Feier des Tages einen Tisch im Restaurant Culinaria reserviert. Das stellt sich als gute Wahl heraus. Wir essen hervorragenden Fisch. Die kleine Franka wird herzlich umsorgt und darf ein ganz neues Malbuch einweihen. (Nur das Fotos habe ich leider keine gemacht.)
Wenigstens von außen hab ich ein Bild von dem schönen kleinen Restaurant.
Butjadingen: Ein Tag am Meer
Tags drauf machen Oma, Franka und ich uns dann auf ans Meer. Von unserer Unterkunft (Tipp siehe unten) dauert das rund eine Dreiviertelstunde. Dafür können wir unterwegs schon auf den Jadebusen blicken. Mit einigem Bedauern fahren wir am Schwimmenden Moor vorbei. Das steht auch schon länger auf meinem Wunschzettel. – Aber wir haben nur diesen einen Tag, und da will ich auch an die „richtige Nordsee“!
Auch wenn der Anblick im direkten Vergleich mit den Traumstränden an der Ostsee ernüchternd ausfällt…
Naturerlebnispfad Langwarder Groden
Als hauptsächliches Ausflugsziel für unseren (dreiviertel) Tag in Butjadingen habe ich den Naturlehrpfad am Langwarder Groden rausgesucht. Hier ragt ein Halbinselchen mitten ins Watt und präsentiert so praktisch das Beste vom Nationalpark Niedersächsisches Wattenmeer auf engstem Raum. Ein vier Kilometer langer Rundwanderweg – durchgängig barrierefrei und somit auch kinderwagentauglich – führt uns mitten hindurch. Im Gegensatz zu „normalem“ Watt ist er rund um die Uhr begehbar.
Am Parkplatz zeigt eine große Karte den Rundweg auf. Es gibt die große Runde mit vier und die kleine mit zwei Kilometern.
Wir starten bei Ebbe. Der Boden knistert, als all das Leben unter Wasser zu Tage tritt. Trockenen Fußes schieben wir den Buggy über Holzbohlenwege.
Auf ins Watt!
Unzählige Vögel begegnen uns. Wir nehmen uns viel Zeit, lesen alle Infotafeln. Auf dem Rückweg schwappt schon wieder die Flut unter die Bohlen. Wie durch Magie ändert sich die Landschaft komplett.
Ein Teil des Rundwegs läuft auch durch die Salzwiesen des Marschlands.
Meine Mutter und ich stehen beide nicht zum ersten Mal in unserem Leben im Watt. (Die klassische Wattwanderung ein Stück weiter nördlich hat mich zum Beispiel auch schon einmal echt fasziniert: Wattwanderung Föhr – Als wir über den Meeresboden spazierten.) Aber das Naturerlebnis hier am Langwarder Groden ist für uns wirklich etwas Besonderes.
Auch als Franka endlich aus ihrem Mittagsschlaf erwacht, ist sie hochgradig angetan von der Zauberwelt des Watts.
Es knistert, surrt und plätschert da, wo kurze Zeit später schon wieder Wasser fließt. Ausgesprochen spannend, findet auch unser Kleinkind.
Melkhus: Zweifelhafte Kult-Institution
Statt direkt zum (kostenlosen) Parkplatz zurückzukehren, legen wir noch einen Abstecher zum Melkhus ein. Die kleinen Selbstbedienungs-Cafés im Gartenhäuschen-Format genießen wohl an der ganzen Nordseeküste Kultstatus. Vor allem in direkter Nähe von aktiven Milchhöfen sind sie anzutreffen.
Gerade für Familien mit Kindern ist jedes Melkhus ein belieber Zwischenstopp zur Einkehr.
Grundidee ist, dass Gäste gegen Zahlung in die Kasse des Vertrauens frische Milch und Milchprodukte verzehren können. Obwohl sie unter einem gemeinsamen Logo agieren, ist jedes Melkhus eigenständig. Von innen kennen wir nur dieses eine – und sind enttäuscht. Während uns Milch und Buttermilch zum Selberzapfen noch prinzipiell überzeugen (abgesehen davon, dass wir selbst keine trinken mögen), wird mir beim verspäteten Blick auf die Inhaltslisten unserer Einkäufe ganz anders. Was als „frisch vom Bauernhof“ angepriesen wird, enthält zumindest in seiner Form als Eiscreme drei verschiedene Zuckerarten, vier Sorten Stabilisatoren und künstliches Aroma. Na danke!
Vielleicht aus lokaler Milch und in der Nähe hergestellt, aber natürliche Zutaten sind das meinem Verständnis nach nicht…
Aber gut, es hat auch niemand was von „bio“ gesagt… (Und an jeder normalen Eisdiele hängt einfach nur keine Liste von Inhaltsstoffen aus. Der Produzent scheint ja eine lokale italienische Eisdiele zu sein. Seitdem esse ich jedenfalls nur noch Eis, wenn ich weiß, was drin ist.)
Dabei ist die Grundidee so nett…
Fedderwardersiel
Einen kurzen Zwischenstopp legen wir in Fedderwardersiel ein. Der historische Kutterhafen liegt nur wenige Fahrminuten vom Langwarder Groden in der einen und Burhave in der anderen Richtung entfernt.
Von hier starten die beliebten Bootsfahrten ins Wattenmeer, bei denen auch „live gefischt“ wird. Hätten wir mehr Zeit, wäre das sicherlich auch eine schöne Option. (Wir haben auf Borkum mal eine Fahrt mit dem Krabbenfischer gemacht. – Das war schon ein tolles Erlebnis!)
Links liegt das Fahrgastschiff, dass auf seiner Tour die Schleppnetze ausfährt.
Außerdem steht in Fedderwardersiel das Nationalpark-Haus mit Museum. Es gilt als heißer Tipp für Familien bei Regenwetter.
Dann nehmen wir uns den Hauptort der Gemeinde Butjadingen vor: Burhave. Der ist inzwischen ein klassischer Urlaubsort. Am Meer liegen Campingplätze. Hinterm Deich erstrecken sich ganze Straßenzüge von identisch gebauten Ferienhäusern. Ob es weiter hinten auch noch einen „echten“ Ort gibt, schaffen wir bei unserem Kurzbesuch nicht zu überprüfen. Auch wir bleiben brav im Touristensektor.

Touristischer Mittelpunkt des Strandlebens ist das Café Rondell. Vom kostenpflichtigen Strandparkplatz aus ist es der erste Anlaufpunkt. Das Dach lässt sich von der Straße aus als Aussichtsterrasse betreten. Dort stehen wir und können erst einmal nicht aus unserer Haut: Als überzeugte Ostseeurlauber lästern wir eine Runde über die ausgetretene Wiese, die über braunen Schlick ins Wasser führt. Hier Strandurlaub?!
Typisch Nordsee: Strandkörbe auf grüner Wiese, dann Watt, dann Wasser (manchmal).
Franka hätte definitiv nichts dagegen. Ihr hat schließlich auch unser kurzes Strandkorb-Abenteuer in Wilhelmshaven bestens gefallen. Jetzt entdeckt sie den Spielplatz. Der ist super! Für alle Altersklassen ist etwas dabei.
Und hier gibt’s auch “echten” Sand!
Ein paar Meter weiter befindet sich die Nordsee-Lagune von Burhave. Etwas zurückgesetzt und von der Strandpromenade durch einen Zaun abgetrennt, ist sie so etwas wie ein gezeitenunabhängiger Baggersee. Gespeist wird er mit aufbereitetem Meerwasser. Familien mit Gästekarte zahlen 11 Euro Eintritt pro Tag, ohne 15. Ob sich das lohnt, kann ich nicht sagen. Von außen lässt sich kein aussagekräftiger Blick in die Lagune werfen.
Vom Deich aus kann man ein bisschen was erahnen…
Wir schlendern noch etwas die Hauptstraße hinauf, drehen aber bald um. So typischer Touristentrubel ist nicht unsere Kragenweite. Außerdem habe ich Bedenken, dass Franka den riesengroßen Indoor-Spielplatz als solchen identifiziert…
Die Spielscheune in Burhave ist ein großer Indoor-Spielplatz, der wohl auch betreute Kinderanimation anbietet.
So gönnen wir uns nur noch ein Fischbrötchen und machen uns dann auf den Weg, um den Praktikanten abzuholen.
Museumsmühle Moorsee
Ein ganz bisschen Zeit müssen wir noch totschlagen. Also halten wir kurzerhand an der Moorsee-Mühle. Sie steht etwas außerhalb der Ortschaft Abbehausen. Die wiederum gehört zu Nordenham.
Bis 1977 wurde sie noch zum Mehl mahlen benutzt, bevor sie als letzte Windmühle der Region aufgegeben wurde. Gleich im Anschluss machte der Landkreis ein landwirtschaftliches Museum daraus. Ein hübsches Café gehört auch dazu.
Die alte Mühle ist beeindruckend groß.
Die Mühle ist komplett funktionsfähig und auch regelmäßig in Betrieb. Als wir ankommen, ist das Museum allerdings schon geschlossen. Macht nichts, viel Zeit für die Besichtigung hätten wir ohnehin nicht gehabt. Prinzipiell lohnt sich die aber bestimmt.
Auch nach Feierabend gibt es auf dem frei zugänglichen Außengelände einiges zu sehen. Unser Kleinkind freut sich über ein paar Schafe. Wir Großen entdecken hinter dem Parkplatz eine Flutter. Mit diesen Wasserschöpfmühlen wurden, wie wir lernen, im Marschland Gräben entwässert. Auf Knopfdruck setzt sich das merkwürdige Gebilde in Bewegung.
Sieht aus wie eine Mini-Windmühle – ist auch so etwas Ähnliches.

Ovelgönne
Bevor wir die Heimreise antreten, darf uns der Kurzzeit-Ovelgönner aber noch einmal „sein“ Dorf zeigen.
Offiziell ist die Gemeinde Ovelgönne über 120 Quadratkilometer groß – also riesig. (Zum Vergleich: Die umliegenden Großstädte Oldenburg, Wilhelmshaven und Bremerhaven verfügen jeweils „nur“ knapp über 100 Quadratkilometer Ausdehnung.) Dafür ist das „Grüne Herz der Wesermarsch“ bei der Einwohnerzahl deutlich bescheidener: Gut 5000 Menschen verteilen sich über das „Stadt“gebiet. Sie wohnen in kleinen Hagenhufendörfern und Einzelhöfen verstreut. Historischer Mittelpunkt ist das alte Burgdorf Ovelgönne. Da das auch der temporäre Wohn- und Arbeitsort des Sohnes ist, beschränken wir uns darauf.
Ovelgönne lädt durchaus zu einem kleinen Stadtbummel ein. Oder sagen wir lieber: einem Dorfspaziergang.
Von der Burg, die Graf Johann V. von Oldenburg nach der endgültigen Unterwerfung der Friesen Anfang des 16. Jahrhunderts hier errichten ließ, ist praktisch nichts mehr übrig. Klassische Sehenswürdigkeiten gibt es in Ovelgönne daher nicht.
Erste Anlaufstelle für Sightseeing wäre sicherlich das Handwerksmuseum Ovelgönne. Es zeigt laut Homepage lokale Handwerksgeschichte des 18., 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts.
Viel älter als das Museum ist übrigens kein Haus in Ovelgönne. Im Mittelalter war es hier noch regelmäßig zu nass zum Siedeln.
Unsere liebste Sehenswürdigkeit ist der Weserbäcker. Die Filiale der lokalen kleinen Kette versorgt uns mit Reiseproviant. (Allerdings fallen mir, als ich den Namen gerade bei Google Maps nachschlage, aktuell einige schlechte Bewertungen von Einheimischen auf. Wir fanden es nett.)
Das Bäckereigebäude ist – trotz fragwürdiger Kommasetzung – ein besonders hübsches in Ovelgönne.
Darüber hinaus genießen wir einfach das ausgesprochen hübsche Stadtbild. Breite Bürgersteige führen uns durch die Straßen. Gesäumt sind diese mit regionaltypischen Wohnhäusern: ohne Dachüberstand, bescheiden, ordentlich. Mehrere alte Brunnen kommen uns unter. Ihre Pumpen sind abschließbar, sodass trotz ihrer Lage im öffentlichen Raum nur die Besitzer an das kostbare Grundwasser kommen. Interessant!
Nicht die einzige eingehauste und abgeschlossene Wasserpumpe in Ovelgönne.
Unterkunftstipp in Großenmeer
Zum Schluss möchte ich noch unseren Übernachtungstipp weitergeben. So kurzfristig war es nämlich gar nicht so einfach, überhaupt einen Platz zum Schlafen zu bekommen. (In Ovelgönne selbst habe ich vier Vermietungsbetriebe aufgespürt, deren Repräsentierende am Telefon alle sehr nett waren – aber restlos ausgebucht.)
Eine sehr schöne Alternative haben wir schließlich im Ovelgönner Ortsteil Großenmeer gefunden. Entgegen erster Assoziationen liegt das winzige Dorf im Landesinneren, etwa auf halber Strecke zwischen Oldenburg und dem Burgdorf Ovelgönne. Bei dem namensgebenden „Meer“ handelte es sich es um ein Binnengewässer, das allerdings längst verschwunden ist.
Hier steht das Gasthaus Großenmeer. Auch hier täuscht der Name ein bisschen: Ein traditioneller Gasthof ist das nicht. In dem modernen Neubau ist ein Saal für Events (vor allem wohl Hochzeitsfeiern) untergebracht. Die Front nimmt ein Bäckerei-Café ein, das Übernachtungsgästen Gelegenheit zum Frühstück gibt.
Der Haupteingang zum Veranstaltungssaal. Hier hätte ich mal ein bisschen nach rechts schwenken sollen, damit der Bäcker mit im Bild ist… Der Zugang zu den Hotelzimmern erfolgt seitlich über ein Treppenhaus.
Im Obergeschoss liegen vier Hotelzimmer. Der Check-in läuft komplett kontaktlos und unabhängig von Öffnungszeiten. Unser Zimmer ist hübsch eingerichtet und pieksauber. (Wer der Sache für eigene Zwecke nachgehen möchte: Hier ist der Link zur Unterkunft.)
Ein richtig schönes Hotelzimmer erwartet uns!
Großenmeer selbst bietet nichts wirklich Sehenswertes. Für unsere Zwecke ist es aber nahezu perfekt. Bis nach Ovelgönne fahren wir eine Viertelstunde. (Ähnlich weit wäre es nach Oldenburg hinein.) Nur der kleine Spielplatz im Dorf wirkt ein bisschen mau. Franka ist mit den beiden Federwippen schräg gegenüber von unserem Hotel aber vollauf zufrieden.

Es gibt Blogbeiträge, da weiß ich von vornherein, dass sie nicht viele Menschen lesen werden. Da kann ich mit unseren Reiseerfahrungen nicht das liefern, wonach die Leute suchen. Oder es geht um Regionen, nach denen die Leute von vornherein nicht suchen. In diesem Fall ist beides so, fürchte ich. Trotzdem juckt es mich auch ein Jahr nach unserem Kurztrip an die Nordsee immer noch, meine Erfahrungen über Butjadingen und die Wesermarsch zu veröffentlichen. Butjadingen und die Wesermarsch: Was ist das überhaupt?
Das Ding ist, dass unser Kurztrip Butjadingen eigentlich nur gestreift hat. Überhaupt fand ich es sehr verwirrend, was in dieser Region nun wie heißt und wozu gehört. Deshalb beginne ich damit, das alles kurz aufzudröseln. Historisch ist das alles schrecklich interessant!
Diese Infotafel in Ovelgönne zeigt, um welche Region es geht. Sie wirbt für Fahrradreisen – und die müssen hier in der Tat eine wahre Freude sein!
Auch auf anderen Ebenen staune ich, wie eigentümlich die Gegend da oben an der westlichen Wesermündung ist. Nur ein paar Kilometer von unserer Haustür entfernt überquere ich denselben Fluss beinahe täglich. Nach gerade einmal zweieinhalb Stunden Fahrzeit über die Landstraßen flussaufwärts habe ich dagegen das Gefühl, in einem anderen Land zu stehen. Die Friesen, die die Wesermarsch kultivierten und im späteren Genpool-Mix der Neuzeit wohl auch heute noch dominieren, sind offenbar schon ein Schlag Menschen für sich. Und erst die Landschaft selber!
Die Wesermarsch an der Nordsee in Butjadingen ist eine eigentümliche Gegend.
Butjadingen: Landschaft, Ort, Reiseziel
Butjadingen ist keine Stadt, kein Ortsname. Eigentlich. Ursprünglich bezeichnet der Begriff „alles jenseits der Jade“. „Buten“ heißt auf Plattdeutsch draußen oder eben auch „da hinten irgendwo ganz abgelegen“. Die Mehrheit der Friesen siedelte westlich entlang der Nordsee bis weit ins heutige Holland.
Von Butjadingen aus geht es mitten hinein in den Nationalpark Niedersächsisches Wattenmeer.
Der Name Butjadingen hat sich festgesetzt für die Halbinsel, die Jadebusen und Weser bilden. (Betont wird übrigens auf der zweiten Silbe.) Nach einer Sturmflut im 14. Jahrhundert wurde die Gegend vorübergehend zur vollwertigen Insel. Das konnten die Bewohner durch Eindeichung wieder ändern. Die ehemalige Trennlinie bildet heute noch die Grenze zum Stadland im Süden.
Ein typisches altes Fischerhaus (allerdings in der Kreisstadt Brake – aus Butjadingen habe ich blöderweise nicht so viele Fotos).
1974 fasste man die kleinen Küstendörfer Langwarden, Burhave und Stollhamm zusammen, um den spärlich besiedelten Landstrich besser verwalten zu können. Butjadingen wurde der Name dieser neu entstandenen Gemeinde.
Unter diesem Label vermarktet sich seitdem auch der (eher verhaltene) Tourismus der Region. Touristisches Zentrum war und ist immer noch Burhave. Dort ploppt auch das Wort Butjadingen auf, wenn man es bei Google Maps sucht. Auch die beiden Nordseebäder Tossens und Fedderwardersiel sowie das Strandbad Eckwarderhörne gehören jedoch zur Gemeinde Butjadingen.

Region Wesermarsch
Die nächstgrößere Region – und das, was man eigentlich unserer Reise als Überschrift geben müsste – ist die Wesermarsch. Auch die hat wieder verschiedene Bedeutungsebenen.
Zunächst einmal erklärt die Wortbedeutung die geografische Beschaffenheit. Marsch ist Land, das sich nach der letzten Eiszeit vom Meer schied (durch natürliche oder menschengesteuerte Prozesse). Somit bezeichnet die Wesermarsch das Neuland links und eigentlich auch rechts der Weser. Da hat sich in den vergangenen Jahrtausenden und selbst in den letzten paar Jahrhunderten nämlich noch erstaunlich viel getan!
Wo heute Schafe grasen, war vor gar nicht allzu langer Zeit noch Meeresboden.
Es juckt mich schon wieder in den Fingern, hier vom mittelalterlichen Gau Rüstringen zu schreiben, vom Stedingerkrieg und vom generell komplizierten Verhältnis zum nahen Oldenburg und seinen Grafen. Das verkneife ich mir. Dafür gestatte ich mir aber den Hinweis, dass die gesamte Region bis 1773 über hundert Jahre lang unter dänischer Herrschaft stand.
In modernen Zeiten geht es eher um den Landkreis Wesermarsch. Der ist mehr oder weniger deckungsgleich mit der historischen beziehungsweise geografischen Region. Grob gesagt umfasst er das Gebiet nördlich von Bremen links der Weser bis zur Linie Oldenburg – Jadebusen.
Die gesamte Gegend ist laut Wikipedia “praktisch frei von jeder Industrie”. In Brake und Nordenham gibt es zumindest “Hafengedöns”.
Auf 825 Quadratkilometer kommen gerade einmal 88.500 Einwohner. Es gibt im Norden und Osten Niedersachsens spärlicher besiedelte Gegenden (etwa das Wendland). Aber hier im ländlichen Schaumburg zum Beispiel wohnen mehr als doppelt so viele Menschen pro Quadratkilometer.
Der Landkreis Wesermarsch umfasst neun Gemeinden. Eine von ihnen ist Butjadingen. Die drei anderen, mit denen wir auf unserem Kurztrip an die Nordsee Bekanntschaft schließen, sind das südlich davon gelegene Nordenham, das wiederum südliche Ovelgönne und die Kreisstadt Brake östlich davon an der Weser.
Bummel durch die Kleinstadt Brake. Sie ist Verwaltungssitz, aber nach Nordenham nur zweitgrößte Stadt im Landkreis Wesermarsch.
Butjadingen und die Wesermarsch mit Kleinkind und Teenager – und Oma
Anlass unserer Reise in die Wesermarsch ist der 17. Geburtstag meines großen Sohnes. Der absolviert ein Sozialpraktikum in Ovelgönne. Drei Wochen lang hilft er bei der Begleitung von Menschen mit Behinderungen. Währenddessen wohnt er zum ersten Mal in seinem Leben in einer WG auf dem Gelände der Einrichtung.

Sein Geburtstag fällt auf den vorletzten Tag seines Praktikums. Also schreibe ich seine Betreuerin an und verabrede mit ihr einen Überraschungsbesuch. Da es sich um einen Wochentag handelt, reisen wir in ungewohnter Besetzung an: die Oma, die kleine Schwester (fast zwei) und die Mama (also ich). Einen Nachmittag und Abend haben wir zusammen, bevor Janis am Folgetag vor der Heimreise noch eine Schicht absolvieren muss. Den müssen wir Besucher also in der Region noch rumkriegen.
Da liegt ein Ausflug an die Nordsee nahe. – So nahe dann aber auch wieder nicht, denn von Ovelgönne bis Butjadingen ist es fast eine Stunde Fahrzeit.
Unsere Reisegruppe: Oma, Geburtstagskind Janis, Franka und ich (und im Hintergrund die Weser in Brake).
Brake: Weserspaziergang mit Einkehr
Nachdem wir das Geburtstagskind begrüßt, angemessen gratuliert, die Einrichtung und sein Zimmer besichtigt haben, ist es erwartungsgemäß später Nachmittag. Deshalb fahren wir heute nur noch die zehn Minuten in die nahe Kreisstadt. Zeichnet man auf der Landkarte ein Viereck zwischen Wilhelmshaven, Bremerhaven, Bremen und Oldenburg, liegt Brake genau in dessen Mitte. Rund 15.000 Menschen wohnen hier.

Wir parken kostenlos an der Heukaje. Leider pladdert es, sodass unser Kleinkind sich unter die Plastikplane des Buggys rettet. Egal, der kleine Spielplatz an der Kaje hat ohnehin eher dekorativen Charakter.
Hübsch, aber maximal was für ältere Kinder.
Zu den Sehenswürdigkeiten von Brake zählt vor allem das „Schifffahrtsmuseum Unterweser“. (Es hat gute Kritiken. Bei dem Thema sind wir aber alle nicht allzu traurig, dass sich ein Besuch zeitlich heute nicht mehr lohnt. Mehr Infos gibt es auf der Museums-Homepage.)
Ich wäre schon gern mal reingegangen…
So beschränken wir uns auf einen Stadtbummel. Brake ist für uns ein ausgesprochen interessantes Städtchen. Wir schlendern an der Weser entlang, die sich hier zu einem mächtigen breiten Fluss entwickelt hat. Die schweren Flutschutztore beeindrucken uns.

Die Fußgängerzone ist hübsch, aber es herrscht viel Leerstand. Es ist wohl wie überall: Die jungen Leute gehen lieber in die großen Städte.

Zum Abendessen habe ich zur Feier des Tages einen Tisch im Restaurant Culinaria reserviert. Das stellt sich als gute Wahl heraus. Wir essen hervorragenden Fisch. Die kleine Franka wird herzlich umsorgt und darf ein ganz neues Malbuch einweihen. (Nur das Fotos habe ich leider keine gemacht.)
Wenigstens von außen hab ich ein Bild von dem schönen kleinen Restaurant.
Butjadingen: Ein Tag am Meer
Tags drauf machen Oma, Franka und ich uns dann auf ans Meer. Von unserer Unterkunft (Tipp siehe unten) dauert das rund eine Dreiviertelstunde. Dafür können wir unterwegs schon auf den Jadebusen blicken. Mit einigem Bedauern fahren wir am Schwimmenden Moor vorbei. Das steht auch schon länger auf meinem Wunschzettel. – Aber wir haben nur diesen einen Tag, und da will ich auch an die „richtige Nordsee“!
Auch wenn der Anblick im direkten Vergleich mit den Traumstränden an der Ostsee ernüchternd ausfällt…
Naturerlebnispfad Langwarder Groden
Als hauptsächliches Ausflugsziel für unseren (dreiviertel) Tag in Butjadingen habe ich den Naturlehrpfad am Langwarder Groden rausgesucht. Hier ragt ein Halbinselchen mitten ins Watt und präsentiert so praktisch das Beste vom Nationalpark Niedersächsisches Wattenmeer auf engstem Raum. Ein vier Kilometer langer Rundwanderweg – durchgängig barrierefrei und somit auch kinderwagentauglich – führt uns mitten hindurch. Im Gegensatz zu „normalem“ Watt ist er rund um die Uhr begehbar.
Am Parkplatz zeigt eine große Karte den Rundweg auf. Es gibt die große Runde mit vier und die kleine mit zwei Kilometern.
Wir starten bei Ebbe. Der Boden knistert, als all das Leben unter Wasser zu Tage tritt. Trockenen Fußes schieben wir den Buggy über Holzbohlenwege.
Auf ins Watt!
Unzählige Vögel begegnen uns. Wir nehmen uns viel Zeit, lesen alle Infotafeln. Auf dem Rückweg schwappt schon wieder die Flut unter die Bohlen. Wie durch Magie ändert sich die Landschaft komplett.
Ein Teil des Rundwegs läuft auch durch die Salzwiesen des Marschlands.
Meine Mutter und ich stehen beide nicht zum ersten Mal in unserem Leben im Watt. (Die klassische Wattwanderung ein Stück weiter nördlich hat mich zum Beispiel auch schon einmal echt fasziniert: Wattwanderung Föhr – Als wir über den Meeresboden spazierten.) Aber das Naturerlebnis hier am Langwarder Groden ist für uns wirklich etwas Besonderes.
Auch als Franka endlich aus ihrem Mittagsschlaf erwacht, ist sie hochgradig angetan von der Zauberwelt des Watts.
Es knistert, surrt und plätschert da, wo kurze Zeit später schon wieder Wasser fließt. Ausgesprochen spannend, findet auch unser Kleinkind.
Melkhus: Zweifelhafte Kult-Institution
Statt direkt zum (kostenlosen) Parkplatz zurückzukehren, legen wir noch einen Abstecher zum Melkhus ein. Die kleinen Selbstbedienungs-Cafés im Gartenhäuschen-Format genießen wohl an der ganzen Nordseeküste Kultstatus. Vor allem in direkter Nähe von aktiven Milchhöfen sind sie anzutreffen.
Gerade für Familien mit Kindern ist jedes Melkhus ein belieber Zwischenstopp zur Einkehr.
Grundidee ist, dass Gäste gegen Zahlung in die Kasse des Vertrauens frische Milch und Milchprodukte verzehren können. Obwohl sie unter einem gemeinsamen Logo agieren, ist jedes Melkhus eigenständig. Von innen kennen wir nur dieses eine – und sind enttäuscht. Während uns Milch und Buttermilch zum Selberzapfen noch prinzipiell überzeugen (abgesehen davon, dass wir selbst keine trinken mögen), wird mir beim verspäteten Blick auf die Inhaltslisten unserer Einkäufe ganz anders. Was als „frisch vom Bauernhof“ angepriesen wird, enthält zumindest in seiner Form als Eiscreme drei verschiedene Zuckerarten, vier Sorten Stabilisatoren und künstliches Aroma. Na danke!
Vielleicht aus lokaler Milch und in der Nähe hergestellt, aber natürliche Zutaten sind das meinem Verständnis nach nicht…
Aber gut, es hat auch niemand was von „bio“ gesagt… (Und an jeder normalen Eisdiele hängt einfach nur keine Liste von Inhaltsstoffen aus. Der Produzent scheint ja eine lokale italienische Eisdiele zu sein. Seitdem esse ich jedenfalls nur noch Eis, wenn ich weiß, was drin ist.)
Dabei ist die Grundidee so nett…
Fedderwardersiel
Einen kurzen Zwischenstopp legen wir in Fedderwardersiel ein. Der historische Kutterhafen liegt nur wenige Fahrminuten vom Langwarder Groden in der einen und Burhave in der anderen Richtung entfernt.
Von hier starten die beliebten Bootsfahrten ins Wattenmeer, bei denen auch „live gefischt“ wird. Hätten wir mehr Zeit, wäre das sicherlich auch eine schöne Option. (Wir haben auf Borkum mal eine Fahrt mit dem Krabbenfischer gemacht. – Das war schon ein tolles Erlebnis!)
Links liegt das Fahrgastschiff, dass auf seiner Tour die Schleppnetze ausfährt.
Außerdem steht in Fedderwardersiel das Nationalpark-Haus mit Museum. Es gilt als heißer Tipp für Familien bei Regenwetter.
Dann nehmen wir uns den Hauptort der Gemeinde Butjadingen vor: Burhave. Der ist inzwischen ein klassischer Urlaubsort. Am Meer liegen Campingplätze. Hinterm Deich erstrecken sich ganze Straßenzüge von identisch gebauten Ferienhäusern. Ob es weiter hinten auch noch einen „echten“ Ort gibt, schaffen wir bei unserem Kurzbesuch nicht zu überprüfen. Auch wir bleiben brav im Touristensektor.

Touristischer Mittelpunkt des Strandlebens ist das Café Rondell. Vom kostenpflichtigen Strandparkplatz aus ist es der erste Anlaufpunkt. Das Dach lässt sich von der Straße aus als Aussichtsterrasse betreten. Dort stehen wir und können erst einmal nicht aus unserer Haut: Als überzeugte Ostseeurlauber lästern wir eine Runde über die ausgetretene Wiese, die über braunen Schlick ins Wasser führt. Hier Strandurlaub?!
Typisch Nordsee: Strandkörbe auf grüner Wiese, dann Watt, dann Wasser (manchmal).
Franka hätte definitiv nichts dagegen. Ihr hat schließlich auch unser kurzes Strandkorb-Abenteuer in Wilhelmshaven bestens gefallen. Jetzt entdeckt sie den Spielplatz. Der ist super! Für alle Altersklassen ist etwas dabei.
Und hier gibt’s auch “echten” Sand!
Ein paar Meter weiter befindet sich die Nordsee-Lagune von Burhave. Etwas zurückgesetzt und von der Strandpromenade durch einen Zaun abgetrennt, ist sie so etwas wie ein gezeitenunabhängiger Baggersee. Gespeist wird er mit aufbereitetem Meerwasser. Familien mit Gästekarte zahlen 11 Euro Eintritt pro Tag, ohne 15. Ob sich das lohnt, kann ich nicht sagen. Von außen lässt sich kein aussagekräftiger Blick in die Lagune werfen.
Vom Deich aus kann man ein bisschen was erahnen…
Wir schlendern noch etwas die Hauptstraße hinauf, drehen aber bald um. So typischer Touristentrubel ist nicht unsere Kragenweite. Außerdem habe ich Bedenken, dass Franka den riesengroßen Indoor-Spielplatz als solchen identifiziert…
Die Spielscheune in Burhave ist ein großer Indoor-Spielplatz, der wohl auch betreute Kinderanimation anbietet.
So gönnen wir uns nur noch ein Fischbrötchen und machen uns dann auf den Weg, um den Praktikanten abzuholen.
Museumsmühle Moorsee
Ein ganz bisschen Zeit müssen wir noch totschlagen. Also halten wir kurzerhand an der Moorsee-Mühle. Sie steht etwas außerhalb der Ortschaft Abbehausen. Die wiederum gehört zu Nordenham.
Bis 1977 wurde sie noch zum Mehl mahlen benutzt, bevor sie als letzte Windmühle der Region aufgegeben wurde. Gleich im Anschluss machte der Landkreis ein landwirtschaftliches Museum daraus. Ein hübsches Café gehört auch dazu.
Die alte Mühle ist beeindruckend groß.
Die Mühle ist komplett funktionsfähig und auch regelmäßig in Betrieb. Als wir ankommen, ist das Museum allerdings schon geschlossen. Macht nichts, viel Zeit für die Besichtigung hätten wir ohnehin nicht gehabt. Prinzipiell lohnt sich die aber bestimmt.
Auch nach Feierabend gibt es auf dem frei zugänglichen Außengelände einiges zu sehen. Unser Kleinkind freut sich über ein paar Schafe. Wir Großen entdecken hinter dem Parkplatz eine Flutter. Mit diesen Wasserschöpfmühlen wurden, wie wir lernen, im Marschland Gräben entwässert. Auf Knopfdruck setzt sich das merkwürdige Gebilde in Bewegung.
Sieht aus wie eine Mini-Windmühle – ist auch so etwas Ähnliches.

Ovelgönne
Bevor wir die Heimreise antreten, darf uns der Kurzzeit-Ovelgönner aber noch einmal „sein“ Dorf zeigen.
Offiziell ist die Gemeinde Ovelgönne über 120 Quadratkilometer groß – also riesig. (Zum Vergleich: Die umliegenden Großstädte Oldenburg, Wilhelmshaven und Bremerhaven verfügen jeweils „nur“ knapp über 100 Quadratkilometer Ausdehnung.) Dafür ist das „Grüne Herz der Wesermarsch“ bei der Einwohnerzahl deutlich bescheidener: Gut 5000 Menschen verteilen sich über das „Stadt“gebiet. Sie wohnen in kleinen Hagenhufendörfern und Einzelhöfen verstreut. Historischer Mittelpunkt ist das alte Burgdorf Ovelgönne. Da das auch der temporäre Wohn- und Arbeitsort des Sohnes ist, beschränken wir uns darauf.
Ovelgönne lädt durchaus zu einem kleinen Stadtbummel ein. Oder sagen wir lieber: einem Dorfspaziergang.
Von der Burg, die Graf Johann V. von Oldenburg nach der endgültigen Unterwerfung der Friesen Anfang des 16. Jahrhunderts hier errichten ließ, ist praktisch nichts mehr übrig. Klassische Sehenswürdigkeiten gibt es in Ovelgönne daher nicht.
Erste Anlaufstelle für Sightseeing wäre sicherlich das Handwerksmuseum Ovelgönne. Es zeigt laut Homepage lokale Handwerksgeschichte des 18., 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts.
Viel älter als das Museum ist übrigens kein Haus in Ovelgönne. Im Mittelalter war es hier noch regelmäßig zu nass zum Siedeln.
Unsere liebste Sehenswürdigkeit ist der Weserbäcker. Die Filiale der lokalen kleinen Kette versorgt uns mit Reiseproviant. (Allerdings fallen mir, als ich den Namen gerade bei Google Maps nachschlage, aktuell einige schlechte Bewertungen von Einheimischen auf. Wir fanden es nett.)
Das Bäckereigebäude ist – trotz fragwürdiger Kommasetzung – ein besonders hübsches in Ovelgönne.
Darüber hinaus genießen wir einfach das ausgesprochen hübsche Stadtbild. Breite Bürgersteige führen uns durch die Straßen. Gesäumt sind diese mit regionaltypischen Wohnhäusern: ohne Dachüberstand, bescheiden, ordentlich. Mehrere alte Brunnen kommen uns unter. Ihre Pumpen sind abschließbar, sodass trotz ihrer Lage im öffentlichen Raum nur die Besitzer an das kostbare Grundwasser kommen. Interessant!

Unterkunftstipp in Großenmeer
Zum Schluss möchte ich noch unseren Übernachtungstipp weitergeben. So kurzfristig war es nämlich gar nicht so einfach, überhaupt einen Platz zum Schlafen zu bekommen. (In Ovelgönne selbst habe ich vier Vermietungsbetriebe aufgespürt, deren Repräsentierende am Telefon alle sehr nett waren – aber restlos ausgebucht.)
Eine sehr schöne Alternative haben wir schließlich im Ovelgönner Ortsteil Großenmeer gefunden. Entgegen erster Assoziationen liegt das winzige Dorf im Landesinneren, etwa auf halber Strecke zwischen Oldenburg und dem Burgdorf Ovelgönne. Bei dem namensgebenden „Meer“ handelte es sich es um ein Binnengewässer, das allerdings längst verschwunden ist.
Hier steht das Gasthaus Großenmeer. Auch hier täuscht der Name ein bisschen: Ein traditioneller Gasthof ist das nicht. In dem modernen Neubau ist ein Saal für Events (vor allem wohl Hochzeitsfeiern) untergebracht. Die Front nimmt ein Bäckerei-Café ein, das Übernachtungsgästen Gelegenheit zum Frühstück gibt.
Der Haupteingang zum Veranstaltungssaal. Hier hätte ich mal ein bisschen nach rechts schwenken sollen, damit der Bäcker mit im Bild ist… Der Zugang zu den Hotelzimmern erfolgt seitlich über ein Treppenhaus.
Im Obergeschoss liegen vier Hotelzimmer. Der Check-in läuft komplett kontaktlos und unabhängig von Öffnungszeiten. Unser Zimmer ist hübsch eingerichtet und pieksauber. (Wer der Sache für eigene Zwecke nachgehen möchte: Hier ist der Link zur Unterkunft.)
Ein richtig schönes Hotelzimmer erwartet uns!
Großenmeer selbst bietet nichts wirklich Sehenswertes. Für unsere Zwecke ist es aber nahezu perfekt. Bis nach Ovelgönne fahren wir eine Viertelstunde. (Ähnlich weit wäre es nach Oldenburg hinein.) Nur der kleine Spielplatz im Dorf wirkt ein bisschen mau. Franka ist mit den beiden Federwippen schräg gegenüber von unserem Hotel aber vollauf zufrieden.

That being said, while horror remakes tend to have a hot or cold reputation, there are those who don’t have any reputation at all. There are some horror remakes that aren’t as well-remembered as the likes of John Carpenter’s glorious take on The Thing or Gus Van Sant’s pointless remake of Psycho.
House On Haunted Hill (1999)
William Castle is a B-movie legend, but his reputation for prioritizing gimmicks to storytelling narrative makes his works difficult to readapt. House on Haunted Hill is about as gimmicky as the original but in a much more aggressively 90s way, removing a lot of the subtlety and ramping up the gore.

Not to mention that the movie overutilizes late 1990s CGI, which leads to the movie having some of the worst visual effects in film history. Thirteen Ghostsan infamous remake of another William Castle movie from the same company Dark Castle, is similarly handled, but it has a so-bad-it’s-good quality to it, something House on Haunted Hill doesn’t have.
House Of Wax (2005)
Yet another Dark Castle joint, House of Wax is a remake of the 1953 Vincent Price classic, but the horror icon likely wouldn’t have seen the film as a loving tribute if he ever got to see it. Instead of a classic macabre period story, the remake of House of Wax is a bog-standard slasher in the most mid-2000s fashion.

The film doesn’t even attempt to follow the plot of the original movie, with the new take being a modern day-set ghost town story with a serious mean streak, featuring a main villain that has none of the screen presence as the iconic Merchant of Menace. While it has a pretty decent atmosphere, House of Wax just doesn’t hold a candle to the original.
The Fog (2005)
John Carpenter’s work isn’t known for having great remakes, but the remake of The Fog fails on a gobsmacking level. The new The Fog just doesn’t have anything new to add to the story of a ghostly fog picking off the residents of Antonio Island one by one, nor does it have anything interesting to say about the original’s narrative.

What’s annoying is that what made the original movie work, its slow pace and creepy atmosphere, is tossed out with extreme prejudice in the remake. The movie tries to be more flashy and gory than the first, but that ends up failing to help it stand out amongst a glut of similar movies that came out around the same time.
The Omen (2006)
There isn’t a whole lot to say about the remake of the late Richard Donner’s The Omenas it’s just the original movie… again. Instead of doing something interesting with the story of a couple who realize that their son may be The Antichrist, the remake of The Omen follows the original’s story beat for beat, only it isn’t as innovative.
All the originally shocking deaths lack weight, the new cast doesn’t have the same chemistry, the new additions to the film’s score are forgettable, and the cinematography is far less stunning. The one thing the movie had going for it was that the decision to release it on June 6th, 2006 was pretty clever.
Black Christmas (2006)
A cult classic in the truest sense, 1974’s Black Christmas truly put the slasher genre on the map and left a lasting impression through both its dark humor and subtlety. While the 2006 remake isn’t the only remake of the film, it’s the one that’s more faithful to the original… kind of.
The remake of Black Christmas is a far more mean-spirited affair with the blood and gore dial cranked up to eleven, not to mention it does a massive disservice to the original killer by both overexplaining him and giving him a face. The remake added way too many unneeded elements to the original, with all of those elements failing to help it last longer in the memory.
The Wolfman (2010)
Remakes of Universal Monster movies are a mixed bag, as there are either cinematic masterpieces like 2020’s The Invisible Man or misfires like 2017’s The Mummy. Somewhere in the middle is the remake of The Wolfmanthough unlike a lot of these remakes, it does have its merits.

The film is well-cast, Joe Johnson’s direction is strong, it’s complemented by Shelley Johnson’s cinematography, and Rick Baker’s take on the iconic werewolf is a nice update to the original. However, the movie’s script lets it down and the CGI transformation sequences don’t hold up.
Leprechaun: Origins (2014)
What made the Leprechaun movies, as trashy as they sometimes got, was their goofy St. Patrick’s Day-tinged horror, but Vince McMahon and co. didn’t get that memo. Leprechaun: Origins was produced by none other than WWE and starred one of their wrestlers, Dylan “Hornswaggle” Postl, as the titular Leprechaun.
Unfortunately, the film’s ties to the wrestling world is the most interesting detail about it, as the movie takes the dark and gritty approach, turning the Leprechaun himself from a wisecracking magician to a gangly Xenomorph knockoff. As bad as the Leprechaun movies got, they still have an enjoyable quality to them, but Origins just doesn’t have that same magic.
Jacob’s Ladder (2019)
There are a couple of horror movies that, quite frankly, should just be left alone, with Jacob’s Ladder being among them. Nonetheless, Jacob’s Ladder got a remake, and just like with most leftovers, the story of Jacob Singer just isn’t as good the second time around.
The remake follows a similar plot, but it chose not to translate the themes and imagery, with its low budget being apparent on the screen. Overall, the remake is vastly inferior to the original, which makes one wonder why the decision was made to remake in the first place.
The Grudge (2020)
J-horror films are tough to make work for audiences outside of Japan, but the original remake of The Grudge was one of the more successful ones. When the trailers for the new take on the series made the rounds, many expected 2020’s The Grudge to do something unique with the franchise… those people were left disappointed.

Released just this year on Netflix, many people were unaware that a new Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie even came out, with those who did watch it getting an experience they almost immediately forgot. Ignoring all the sequels, the movie picks up almost 50 years after the original movie, but compared to the first film, the new movie doesn’t stack up.
The movie has a lot of gore, a disservice to the first, as that film was still effective without it, but its biggest crime is that it that there’s nothing special about it. While the movie is trying to copy the recent Halloween movies in its approach, it doesn’t do anything interesting with the idea of bringing Leatherface into the modern day.

With the tepid response to the recently released remake of Firestarterit is worth wondering whether the film’s future response will match the contemporary one. This is because horror remakes tend to get a lot of negative responses, with that backlash sometimes proving to be very much deserved.
That being said, while horror remakes tend to have a hot or cold reputation, there are those who don’t have any reputation at all. There are some horror remakes that aren’t as well-remembered as the likes of John Carpenter’s glorious take on The Thing or Gus Van Sant’s pointless remake of Psycho.
House On Haunted Hill (1999)
William Castle is a B-movie legend, but his reputation for prioritizing gimmicks to storytelling narrative makes his works difficult to readapt. House on Haunted Hill is about as gimmicky as the original but in a much more aggressively 90s way, removing a lot of the subtlety and ramping up the gore.

Not to mention that the movie overutilizes late 1990s CGI, which leads to the movie having some of the worst visual effects in film history. Thirteen Ghostsan infamous remake of another William Castle movie from the same company Dark Castle, is similarly handled, but it has a so-bad-it’s-good quality to it, something House on Haunted Hill doesn’t have.
House Of Wax (2005)
Yet another Dark Castle joint, House of Wax is a remake of the 1953 Vincent Price classic, but the horror icon likely wouldn’t have seen the film as a loving tribute if he ever got to see it. Instead of a classic macabre period story, the remake of House of Wax is a bog-standard slasher in the most mid-2000s fashion.

The film doesn’t even attempt to follow the plot of the original movie, with the new take being a modern day-set ghost town story with a serious mean streak, featuring a main villain that has none of the screen presence as the iconic Merchant of Menace. While it has a pretty decent atmosphere, House of Wax just doesn’t hold a candle to the original.
The Fog (2005)
John Carpenter’s work isn’t known for having great remakes, but the remake of The Fog fails on a gobsmacking level. The new The Fog just doesn’t have anything new to add to the story of a ghostly fog picking off the residents of Antonio Island one by one, nor does it have anything interesting to say about the original’s narrative.

What’s annoying is that what made the original movie work, its slow pace and creepy atmosphere, is tossed out with extreme prejudice in the remake. The movie tries to be more flashy and gory than the first, but that ends up failing to help it stand out amongst a glut of similar movies that came out around the same time.
The Omen (2006)
There isn’t a whole lot to say about the remake of the late Richard Donner’s The Omenas it’s just the original movie… again. Instead of doing something interesting with the story of a couple who realize that their son may be The Antichrist, the remake of The Omen follows the original’s story beat for beat, only it isn’t as innovative.
All the originally shocking deaths lack weight, the new cast doesn’t have the same chemistry, the new additions to the film’s score are forgettable, and the cinematography is far less stunning. The one thing the movie had going for it was that the decision to release it on June 6th, 2006 was pretty clever.
Black Christmas (2006)
A cult classic in the truest sense, 1974’s Black Christmas truly put the slasher genre on the map and left a lasting impression through both its dark humor and subtlety. While the 2006 remake isn’t the only remake of the film, it’s the one that’s more faithful to the original… kind of.
The remake of Black Christmas is a far more mean-spirited affair with the blood and gore dial cranked up to eleven, not to mention it does a massive disservice to the original killer by both overexplaining him and giving him a face. The remake added way too many unneeded elements to the original, with all of those elements failing to help it last longer in the memory.
The Wolfman (2010)
Remakes of Universal Monster movies are a mixed bag, as there are either cinematic masterpieces like 2020’s The Invisible Man or misfires like 2017’s The Mummy. Somewhere in the middle is the remake of The Wolfmanthough unlike a lot of these remakes, it does have its merits.

The film is well-cast, Joe Johnson’s direction is strong, it’s complemented by Shelley Johnson’s cinematography, and Rick Baker’s take on the iconic werewolf is a nice update to the original. However, the movie’s script lets it down and the CGI transformation sequences don’t hold up.
Leprechaun: Origins (2014)
What made the Leprechaun movies, as trashy as they sometimes got, was their goofy St. Patrick’s Day-tinged horror, but Vince McMahon and co. didn’t get that memo. Leprechaun: Origins was produced by none other than WWE and starred one of their wrestlers, Dylan “Hornswaggle” Postl, as the titular Leprechaun.
Unfortunately, the film’s ties to the wrestling world is the most interesting detail about it, as the movie takes the dark and gritty approach, turning the Leprechaun himself from a wisecracking magician to a gangly Xenomorph knockoff. As bad as the Leprechaun movies got, they still have an enjoyable quality to them, but Origins just doesn’t have that same magic.
Jacob’s Ladder (2019)
There are a couple of horror movies that, quite frankly, should just be left alone, with Jacob’s Ladder being among them. Nonetheless, Jacob’s Ladder got a remake, and just like with most leftovers, the story of Jacob Singer just isn’t as good the second time around.
The remake follows a similar plot, but it chose not to translate the themes and imagery, with its low budget being apparent on the screen. Overall, the remake is vastly inferior to the original, which makes one wonder why the decision was made to remake in the first place.

J-horror films are tough to make work for audiences outside of Japan, but the original remake of The Grudge was one of the more successful ones. When the trailers for the new take on the series made the rounds, many expected 2020’s The Grudge to do something unique with the franchise… those people were left disappointed.
