At the age of 75, legendary film director Ivan Reitman has died. Although he directed the comedy classics Stripes, Meatballs, and Twins, he’ll forever be remembered for Ghostbusters (1984) and Ghostbusters II (1989).
For those who came of age in the ’80s and ’90s, the original Ghostbusters isn’t just a classic comedy, for some, it’s close to being an offbeat bible. But, what is so interesting about Ghostbusters is that the original Reitman film is pretty much not a movie for kids. The movie is full of tons of adult humor, sexy jokes, and lots of swearing. And yet, as children, many of us loved it! But why?
Back in 2016, I briefly spoke to Ivan Reitman at Madame Tussauds before the launch of the Ghostbusters: Answer the Call. As you can guess, he was brilliantly funny, down-to-earth, and kind. And, when I asked him why a movie very-much not for kids appealed to kids, he gave a great answer.
“Children are generally afraid of ghosts. What we learned pretty early on in the film is that it taught you not to be afraid of those unknown things. No one really dies in the movie, and even though it’s scary because of the comedy and because of the particular nature of the Ghostbusters themselves.”
For all the tiny Ghostbusters fans, singing “I ain’t afraid of no ghost” at the top of your lungs as a kid was an empowering moment. But, the gift of Ivan Reitman’s brilliance is, that on some level, the movie was actually designed that way. Sure, Venkman isn’t a role model, and frankly, neither are Egon and Ray. The closest any of the Ghostbusters comes to being truly relatable is perhaps Winston. But, Reitman’s insight is notable for one reason “the particular nature of the Ghostbusters themselves,” is that they aren’t always brave. They’re accidental heroes who laugh in the face of danger just as much as they run away from it. One of the greatest, and funniest examples of this is when the ultra-rational Egon needs to come up with an answer to a problem and stoically tells Venkman he’s “terrified beyond the capacity for rational thought.” In Ghostbusters even the brainiac gets scared.
However, the twist is, of course, that these guys bust ghosts for a living, meaning at some point, they have to get over it.
“The message, I think is that its fear that’s overcome,” Reitman told me in the same interview. “And I think that’s a valuable lesson as a kid.”
The superpower of the Ghostbusters generation was finding a new way of facing our fears, which is just one of the many gifts Reitman and his collaborators — Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd — gave to the world. And, this small pearl of insightful wisdom is just one more reason that the world will miss Ivan Reitman. Before his films, nobody ever made them like this.

“Definitely Dame Judi Dench,” she said, immediately. “I remember her walking in with Ian McKellan, they walked in together in rehearsals, and the whole room, all the dancers and the actors, everyone made this line, to kind of curtsy or bow to royalty.” She paused, seemingly in wonder, and I imagined Jason Derulo curtsying to Judi Dench.
“There’s something about them, especially in England, they’re like the royal family, they’re legendary. And they’ve earned that legendary status,” she said, reverently. And Taylor too: “She’s just the sweetest and most humble person,” Hayward said. “To be one of the most famous people in the world and make you feel very comfortable is quite a talent I think.”
To be fair, Hayward’s sense of comfort around A-list celebrities may be skewed. One day on the set of Cats, she received a phone call from British Vogue editor Edward Enninful, asking if she would be one of 15 women on a cover with the theme “a force for change.”

“It was one of the hardest secrets ever, I think I only told my grandma, and she was sworn to secrecy,” she says, laughing. She did the shoot, in which she spoke decisively about feeling pride in being a woman of color in the ballet world, while adding, “I think it will be great for the next mixed-race or black female principal dancer if she doesn’t have to be asked about that. In ballet, it doesn’t matter who you are.”
Later, Enninful called her while she was at a noisy restaurant in Covent Garden, and told her there was someone who wanted to speak to her. It was Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle, who had personally chosen Hayward for the cover and wanted to say thank you. “She really made me feel like she wanted me to be a part of it and had chosen me as one of this amazing group of women herself,” Hayward said. “It was incredible.”
And if there’s anyone you could not resent for being personally thanked by Markle for agreeing to be on the cover of Vogue, it’s Francesca Hayward, who gets up before dawn to pursue her dreams, leaves behind no regrets, goes to the pub, and bows before Judi Dench. During the first months of the pandemic, researchers were able to determine the structure of the coronavirus and how it functions at the molecular level. One of the viral enzymes was identified as a promising target for a drug, which is a strategy that has been successful for other viral diseases, such as AIDS. The idea is to design a molecule with the ability to recognise and bind to the enzyme. This would block its activity and thereby prevent the virus from producing new virus particles, stopping the spread of the virus.
In 2020, researchers at Uppsala University, in collaboration with the Drug discovery and Development platform at Scilifelab, began to screen for inhibitors of the enzyme. They used computer models to identify molecules that can inhibit the enzyme’s activity. This proved to be a fast way to discover starting points for the design of pharmaceuticals. Access to Swedish supercomputers has made it possible to evaluate several hundred million different molecules to find those that can bind to the enzyme. The molecules predicted by the models were then synthesised and tested in experiments.
“The most promising molecule shows the same ability to inhibit the replication of the new coronavirus as the active substance in Paxlovid, a combination drug recently approved for treating COVID-19. Our molecule works well on its own, and we have shown that the molecule is also effective against previously identified variants of the coronavirus,” says Jens Carlsson, associate professor and the article’s lead author.

The Walking Dead has many heroic characters, including Danai Gurira’s Michonne. From the start, she was a badass, and her presence is missed in the series. Deadline reports that Gurira will portray a villain on the stage in a production of Richard III.
Gurira will portray the titular character in an amazing gender-bending role. It will be amazing to see her take on this character, which will undoubtedly be impactful. This production is part of the Free Shakespeare in the Park series held in New York’s The Delacorte Theater in Central Park and will be directed by Robert O’Hara.
No stranger to the stage, her other stage presence includes Measure for Measure, a 2011 Shakespeare in the Park production, and her Broadway debut in Joe Turner’s Come and Gone in 2009.
Free Shakespeare in the Park is celebrating its 60th year in 2022, with Richard III and As You Like It as the two features this year. The theater needs to be revitalized, and anyone can be a supporter with many ways to give to continue the tradition of free events.

If you were sitting in front of the TV screen during Super Bowl LVI on Sunday (February 13), but weren’t interested in the actual game, chances are you were tuning in for at least one of two reasons: the hip-hop legends performing during the Halftime Show or the commercials.
This year, most of the Latines featured in the TV spots during the big game were seen in trailers for upcoming movies and TV series, but there were a couple of celebrities who landed gigs hyping up products like luxury vehicles and fitness centers.
Here is a look at six Latine stars that you may have missed if you went to grab some more chips and guacamole during the commercial breaks.

Salma Hayek
The Oscar-nominated actress starred with action movie icon and former Governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger in a commercial for BMW. The duo played ancient Greek gods Zeus and his wife Hera, who announce their retirement and travel to Palm Springs to spend the rest of their immortal existence relaxing under the sun. Zeus, however, isn’t very happy about having to use his lightning bolt powers to help his neighbors, so Hayek’s Hera decides to purchase him an all-electric BMW. They sing Eddy Grant’s “Electric Avenue” while they take their new vehicle out for a spin.

Danny Trejo
The Machete star had a cameo appearance alongside actress Lindsay Lohan for a TV spot for Planet Fitness. In the commercial, Lohan has made some positive changes in her life. She’s even become “more productive – trading DUIs for DIYs.” In the scene, Lohan bedazzles Trejo’s ankle monitor with gemstones and has even decorated it with his initials. “The verdict is…” Lohan says. Trejo finishes her sentence: “Gorgeous.” Even without the commercial, Trejo would’ve had a great day Sunday anyway. His team, the Los Angeles Rams, won the Super Bowl!

Ismael Cruz Córdova
In the first trailer for the upcoming The Lord of the Rings TV series The Rings of Power, audiences get a glimpse of Córdova’s elvin character Arondir. Córdova will become the first Afro-Latine to play an elf in a J.R.R. Tolkien project. While someonline trolls were upset that the franchise was becoming more diverse, the series creators said they wanted the adaptation to “reflect what the world actually looks like.” During the short trailer, Córdova’s Arondir is seen using his bow and arrow somewhere in a forest of Middle Earth. “A new legend begins this fall,” a title card reads during the teaser. Fortunately, that new legend includes an essential Latine role.

Xochitl Gómez
In the trailer for the Marvel sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, audiences get to see Gómez’s superhero character America Chávez, AKA Miss America, for the first time. Once again, Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) has “opened a doorway between universes” and made things a bit chaotic for everyone. During Gómez’s short scenes as Chávez, she is surrounded by explosions and destruction inside what looks like a temple. In another scene, she screams, “Look out!” at Dr. Strange when a one-eyed, tentacled creature is about to toss a bus at them on a busy city street. In a final scene, Gómez’s Chávez leaps off a pedestal yelling and has one fist cocked and ready to fight. Welcome to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Xochitl!

Sasha Calle
DC Comics covered all their upcoming 2022 movies with one combined teaser trailer, which included scenes from The Batman, Black Adam, The Flash, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. In a two-second-long final scene, Calle’s character,Supergirl, is seen standing behind The Flash (Ezra Miller), who asks someone off-screen, “Are you in?” Yes. Yes, we are.

Oscar Isaac
We had already seen atrailer for the upcoming Disney+ TV series Moon Knight last month, but during the Super Bowl, you’re guaranteed that millions of people will see it all at once. The trailer that showed during the big game was a teaser but included a few new shots that were not in the full trailer last month. One features Isaac’s title character leaping into the air with his cape spread while getting shot at by gunmen while another shows him being approached by a figure wrapped in bandages. Spooky indeed.

Córdova will become the first Afro-Latine to play an elf in a J.R.R. Tolkien project. While someonline trolls were upset that the franchise was becoming more diverse, the series creators said they wanted the adaptation to “reflect what the world actually looks like.” During the short trailer, Córdova’s Arondir is seen using his bow and arrow somewhere in a forest of Middle Earth. “A new legend begins this fall,” a title card reads during the teaser. Fortunately, that new legend includes an essential Latine role.

In the trailer for the Marvel sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, audiences get to see Gómez’s superhero character America Chávez, AKA Miss America, for the first time. Once again, Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) has “opened a doorway between universes” and made things a bit chaotic for everyone. During Gómez’s short scenes as Chávez, she is surrounded by explosions and destruction inside what looks like a temple. In another scene, she screams, “Look out!” at Dr. Strange when a one-eyed, tentacled creature is about to toss a bus at them on a busy city street. In a final scene, Gómez’s Chávez leaps off a pedestal yelling and has one fist cocked and ready to fight. Welcome to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Xochitl!

We had already seen atrailer for the upcoming Disney+ TV series Moon Knight last month, but during the Super Bowl, you’re guaranteed that millions of people will see it all at once. The trailer that showed during the big game was a teaser but included a few new shots that were not in the full trailer last month. One features Isaac’s title character leaping into the air with his cape spread while getting shot at by gunmen while another shows him being approached by a figure wrapped in bandages. Spooky indeed.

The advance planning involved doesn’t always allow for controversy to pop up. However, we all knew the game was in February, so there was plenty of time to not offend Black people during Black History Month.
Disney+, which has a Celebrate Black Stories tab on its home page, didn’t get the memo. Just one week after Asian American actress/comedian Awkwafina once again didn’t apologize for using a “blaccent” in her stand-up and movies, the streaming network featured her in its weird GOAT-themed Super Bowl commercial.

As we previously reported at The Root, in a statement posted on her Twitter on Feb. 5, Awkwafina wrote “As a non-Black POC, I stand by the fact that I will always listen and work tirelessly to understand the history and context of AAVE, what is deemed appropriate or backwards toward the progress of ANY and EVERY marginalized group. But I must emphasize: To mock, belittle, or to be unkind in any way possible at the expense of others is: Simply. Not. My. Nature. It never has, and it never was.”
As expected, this didn’t go over well, with many users calling her out on the non-apology. And I’m going to be honest with you: As offensive as it is that she used a very specific (i.e. Black) personality to get famous, then seemingly dropped it once she reached the mainstream, Awkwafina is not the hill I want to die on.
For me, I’m more upset that Disney didn’t use this Super Bowl commercial opportunity to highlight all of the great Black programming on the streamer. We all know you have Avengers: Endgame, but how about letting the world know they can watch Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, starring Brandy and Whitney Houston, too? Or what about a shoutout for Ruby Bridges, The Proud Family, Red Tails or Cool Runnings? And while we’re here, move that Celebrate Black Stories tab up higher on the home page, so it’s more visible.
Apparently, Disney+ decided none of this mattered to their plans, because it proceeded with airing its big game ad starring Awkwafina—and goats.
The spot featured the actress, who stars in Raya and the Last Dragon and Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, walking through the Disney+ offices, which are filled with the network’s GOATs—as in Greatest of All Time—of programming. But instead, it was actual goats dressed like famous Disney, Marvel and Star Wars characters.
The whole thing just felt tone-deaf and super awkward. Maybe they couldn’t get anyone else to be in the ridiculous ad. You own the rights to the characters Disney, you could just show Woody and Simba, instead of featuring goats dressed like them. It seems like the company really wants everyone to focus on the goats and not Awkwafina, because all press materials feature the animals and not one photo of her.
The silliness of the commercial aside, it just felt like the easiest thing in the world for Disney to ask one of the many Black actors from its movies and TV shows to be in a Super Bowl ad airing during Black History Month.
That said, this was a huge miss for a company usually laser-focused on PR and its public persona.
