“We found that kids who feel their high school STEM classrooms are inclusive are more likely to feel like they belong,” says Kelly Lynn Mulvey, first author of a paper on the work and an associate professor of psychology at NC State. “That sense of belonging makes them more likely to engage in the classroom and more likely to feel like they can use STEM to tackle real-world problems.
“We need workers in the STEM workforce, and we know that high school is when interest in STEM subjects declines for many students. We launched this study because we wanted to evaluate the role inclusivity may play in how students view STEM.”
Inclusivity, in this context, refers to the extent to which students feel a classroom is welcoming to different genders and ethnic groups.
For the study, researchers conducted in-depth surveys of 523 students from five high schools: 34.2% of study participants identified as White/European-American; 33.4% as Black/African-American; 10.5% as Latino/Latina/Latine; 13.4% as biracial or other; and 8.5% of participants chose not to report their race/ethnicity. Meanwhile, 49.4% of study participants identified as female; 36.3% as male; 2.1% non-binary; 1.1% as unsure; and 11.1% chose not to report their gender identity.
In the survey, students were asked questions aimed at assessing how inclusive they felt their STEM classrooms were; the extent to which STEM teachers treated them unfairly; and the extent to which they felt like they personally belonged in their STEM classes. A separate set of questions in the survey assessed the extent to which students engaged with their STEM classes, and the extent to which students felt they could help solve real-world STEM problems in their communities. Examples of real-world STEM problems included lead contamination in drinking water and a lack of access to recycling facilities.
“Most students felt their classrooms were inclusive, and that teachers treated them fairly,” Mulvey says. “However, the further students had progressed through high school, the less likely they were to view their STEM classrooms as inclusive, and the more likely they were to perceive unfair treatment from their teachers. That was true regardless of race and gender.”
The researchers also found that the less fair a student felt their teacher was, the more likely the student was to avoid engaging in the class.
“Similarly, students who felt classrooms were inclusive were more likely to feel that they belonged, increasing both their classroom engagement and their sense of being empowered to address STEM issues in their communities,” Mulvey says.
“In practical terms, this study highlights the fact that feeling like you belong matters. And the way to promote belonging is to make kids feel like their classrooms are inclusive. For example, teachers can take steps to make sure all students feel involved and discuss scientists from backgrounds that reflect the backgrounds of the students.
“These findings are a first step, since this is an ongoing, longitudinal study,” Mulvey says. “We will continue to partner with teachers in the district to promote feelings of inclusion and belonging, and hope to identify additional ways to support students.”
Another variable researchers will look at is the role COVID-19 and remote learning may have played in affecting study outcomes. For example, the data in this study was collected when many students were attending school online.
“While the students reported high levels of inclusivity and low levels of unfair treatment on this survey, we want to see whether that changes now that students are all attending school in person again,” Mulvey says.

As co-president, Schwartz guided IFC Films’ business strategy, distribution and strategic partnerships. Most recently, she led IFC Films’ foray into streaming by creating and successfully launching the IFC Films Unlimited streaming channel, which is seeing subscriber growth driven by a library of award-winning, acclaimed films from the IFC Films, Sundance Selects and IFC Midnight distribution labels. Those titles include The Trip, Two Days, One Night, 45 Years and The Babadook.
Schwartz was promoted to the role of co-president of IFC Films and Sundance Selects in February 2016 from her role as EVP Distribution, Operations and Business Development for Sundance Selects and IFC Films.
Schwartz previously spearheaded development of the company’s Sundance Now SVOD service, which launched in 2014. She also leveraged affiliate relationships and helped create IFC Films’ pioneering and industry-leading day-and-date distribution model, releasing indie movies in theaters simultaneously on VOD, which has since become an industry standard, particularly during the pandemic.
“Lisa is an extraordinary business person who finds and creates value and business opportunities in a way that is quite rare,” said Josh Sapan, AMC Networks president and CEO, said Thursday. “I know her keen commercial instincts and creativity will lead her to do many more great things.”

Spain’s take on horror cinema dates back to roughly 1962 with the release of The Awful Dr. Orloff (Screams in The Night). Well regarded as the first true horror film to be created in the Spanish-speaking language, the film instantaneously became a global success due in part to its resemblance with The Brides of Dracula (1960); however, its stylistic elements remained new and emerging, incorporating excessive violence and heightened nudity. The director, Jesus Franco, introduced the style, assimilating Hammer horror films from England into a distinctly Spanish cinema, and directed or co-directed over 200 movies as a result.

Maybe these crossed-over souls should be able to realm free in whatever universe or dimension they’re in, without the rest of the human population bothering them; this is exactly why these spirits are so angry, they literally just want to be left alone. During a solar eclipse, a teenaged Veronica (Sandra Escacena) and her friends decide to play with a Ouija board, intending to summon the spirit of the girl’s father. Unleashing a sinister spirit instead, demonic entities begin to take over her life until their presence ultimately consumes her. Very loosely based on true events, the 1991 Vallecas case centers around Estefanía Gutiérrez Lázaro, who died mysteriously after using the board.

Though it is believed by many that Sarah, who also became blind, hung herself in the basement of her home, Julia fears that Sara was murdered by a sinister presence. One thing’s for sure, when it comes to the eyes, any self-proclaimed investigation will be shut down completely if this supposed presence doesn’t want any suppressed information to become uncovered. Why would anyone want to play around with the threat of not being able to see anymore, not to mention, possibly dying. Julia’s Eyes shows how a yearning for the truth can lead people down dark paths.

When it comes to living in an apartment building or any sort of complex (haunted or otherwise), make it a point to ask some extensive questions to the realtor about just who is living and working in these buildings (and have they had background checks). Basically, horror movies make viewers paranoid about every aspect of their lives, especially when they’re successful. In Sleep Tight, Cesar (the apartment concierge) is cringe-worthy and a full-blown creep, as he successfully instills fear into anyone he comes into contact with. The way that he treats Clara is terribly wrong, but he’s definitely met his match in her resistance to his actions.

As an evil force runs mad throughout the home’s walls, Alicia is forced to confront a childhood secret she’s been holding onto for most of her life in this wonderfully produced scary movie.

When a mother and her two children are unexpectedly drawn into La Llorona’s deadly supernatural realm, their only chance at survival is a disillusioned priest, who possesses his own personal practices in order to keep away evil entities. The Spanish horror-drama The Curse of La Llorona was successful enough that an anticipated sequel was released.

Spain’s take on horror cinema dates back to roughly 1962 with the release of The Awful Dr. Orloff (Screams in The Night). Well regarded as the first true horror film to be created in the Spanish-speaking language, the film instantaneously became a global success due in part to its resemblance with The Brides of Dracula (1960); however, its stylistic elements remained new and emerging, incorporating excessive violence and heightened nudity. The director, Jesus Franco, introduced the style, assimilating Hammer horror films from England into a distinctly Spanish cinema, and directed or co-directed over 200 movies as a result.
In all, Spain’s most prominent filmmakers have always been looked at as innovators, transforming the ways in which viewers outside the country consume and analyze the cultural distinctions strategically placed within plot lines, separate from their own everyday norms.
Still reeling from post-war anxiety and human trauma, and suffering from the economic fallout of The Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) and the fascism of the Franco years even into the 1960s to the 1970s, Spanish horror movies portrayed the fears and anxieties attached to these uncertainties and reflected social and political pain points. Both jaw-dropping and spine quivering, these projects have increasingly boomed in the early 2000s, accurately illuminating the uneasiness tied to cultures, identities, and personal desires, past and present day. These international scary movies continue to navigate viewers through a roller coaster of emotions, unleashed by the distinctive emergence of the new wave of Spanish horror. Why are Ouija boards cool? Maybe these crossed-over souls should be able to realm free in whatever universe or dimension they’re in, without the rest of the human population bothering them; this is exactly why these spirits are so angry, they literally just want to be left alone. During a solar eclipse, a teenaged Veronica (Sandra Escacena) and her friends decide to play with a Ouija board, intending to summon the spirit of the girl’s father. Unleashing a sinister spirit instead, demonic entities begin to take over her life until their presence ultimately consumes her. Very loosely based on true events, the 1991 Vallecas case centers around Estefanía Gutiérrez Lázaro, who died mysteriously after using the board.

As Julia Levin (Belén Rueda) becomes more haunted by the death of her sister Sara, she slowly and mysteriously begins to lose her sight as she investigates the death of her twin. Though it is believed by many that Sarah, who also became blind, hung herself in the basement of her home, Julia fears that Sara was murdered by a sinister presence. One thing’s for sure, when it comes to the eyes, any self-proclaimed investigation will be shut down completely if this supposed presence doesn’t want any suppressed information to become uncovered. Why would anyone want to play around with the threat of not being able to see anymore, not to mention, possibly dying. Julia’s Eyes shows how a yearning for the truth can lead people down dark paths.

When it comes to living in an apartment building or any sort of complex (haunted or otherwise), make it a point to ask some extensive questions to the realtor about just who is living and working in these buildings (and have they had background checks). Basically, horror movies make viewers paranoid about every aspect of their lives, especially when they’re successful. In Sleep Tight, Cesar (the apartment concierge) is cringe-worthy and a full-blown creep, as he successfully instills fear into anyone he comes into contact with. The way that he treats Clara is terribly wrong, but he’s definitely met his match in her resistance to his actions.

LONDON – British sales and finance operation HanWay Films said it orchestrated 200-plus deals across its sales slate during this year’s Marche du Film in Cannes.
HanWay managing director Thorsten Schumacher described the volume of business done during this year’s Riviera-set market as “record figures,” pointing to the fact the unit more than doubled sales from last year’s Cannes.
“We’ve also had the most financially successful market in our company’s history,” Schumacher said, noting “this level of success is really a testament to our strong and efficient team and to our invaluable producer relationships.”
HanWay Films chairman and Oscar winning producer Jeremy Thomas added: “Hanway is doing a terrific job selling my films and those of so many other great directors, producers and companies.”
Hanway “virtually sold out its Cannes slate” with multiple deal memos including those inked for the Jude Law starrer Dom Hemingway from Recorded Picture Company which is due to shoot in September.
The picture pre-sold for the U.K. (Lionsgate), CIS (DT Productions), Australia (Transmission) Latin America (Swen), Scandinavia (Mis. Label), Israel (United King), Turkey (Mars Distribution), Middle East (Front Row), Ex-Yugoslavia (Cinemania), Hungary and Romania (Pro Rom), Czech Republic (AQS), South Korea (KT&G) and Taiwan (Catchplay).

“The number three really represents a breakthrough in this field,” said Jiadong Zang, associate professor of physics. “Our brain is a three-dimensional object. It’s ironic that all our devices are two-dimensional. They’re underperforming compared to our brains.”
The study, published recently in the journal Nature Materials, provides the results of three years of high-performance numerical simulations, mapping a three-dimensional structure of a 100 nanometer magnetic tetrahedron sample using only three projection angles of electron beams. Zang points to computed tomography medical imaging, or CT scans, as an example. Instead of sending multiple beams of X-rays to map tissues in the body the same images could be produced with only three beams.
Reducing electron beam exposure in fast three-dimensional magnetic imaging is one potential application for this collaborative research. The researchers’ findings also have implications for improving storage capacity of magnetic memory devices, which currently deposit circuits onto two-dimensional panels that are approaching maximum density.
The method offered by this research will be a useful tool to detect and characterize three-dimensional magnetic circuits.
Zang and Alexander Booth, a former UNH doctoral student, conducted the theoretical analysis. Researchers from Japan and the University of Wisconsin performed the physical experiments. Funds from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Office of Science, Basic Energy Sciences (BES) under award number DE-SC0020221 helped support Zang and Booth’s contributions to this research.
