But it became clear that Ava wasn’t who she claimed to be when, after a back-and-forth text conversation, she directed people to an Instagram page promoting Ex Machina — a science-fiction movie about an AI robot so lifelike that it passes for a human named (you guessed it) Ava.

Turns out, the person behind the account worked for A24, the startup movie distributor in charge of promoting Ex Machina.

The stunt exemplifies the buzz-building, boundary-pushing marketing that has helped A24 punch above its weight and infiltrate the zeitgeist, helping small movies stand out amid an increasingly content-saturated market.

When You Don’t Have a Big Budget, Make Big Noise

Since 2013, A24 has released over 100 movies — including titles like Moonlight, Lady Bird, Hereditary, The Witch and Uncut Gems — many of which have garnered significant critical acclaim and cultural attention, despite having a marketing budget much smaller than those of the big studios.

Loren Schwartz, a marketing executive who’s held leadership positions at Warner Bros, Columbia Pictures, Screen Gems and Open Road Films, told Built In that because A24 has fewer marketing dollars than its competitors, it has to spend money much more strategically in order to compete for visibility.

“When you don’t have a lot of money, you need to make more noise somehow.”

“When you don’t have a lot of money, you need to make more noise somehow,” Schwartz said. “Where [A24 does] very well is in publicity, garnering articles and attention for the marketing it does.”

Tearing a page out of A24’s playbook could be useful for marketers working at bootstrapped startups that compete with bigger-name companies.

Of course, just because a campaign worked for A24 doesn’t mean it will work for everyone. Even so, the five lessons below might inspire marketers to think outside the box and turn their companies into brands people cheer for.

5 Marketing Lessons From A24

Experiment With New Channels

A24 released the movie Spring Breakers in theaters in March 2013, where it grossed more than $30 million on a $5 million budget — a huge success by indie film standards.

And it’s not because Spring Breakers had mass-audience appeal or because A24 had lots of money to spend on television commercials and highway billboards. It’s because A24 found a way to break through the noise by creating eye-catching and highly shareable social media content.

In early 2013, A24 uploaded to its Facebook page an image of Spring Breakers star James Franco, hair braided into cornrows and seated next to the rest of the movie’s cast in a way that evoked Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper.” The photo got 600,000 “likes,” and the movie earned 174 million impressions in the weeks leading up to its release, nearly half of which were organic.

Taking a targeted, social-first approach to marketing seems fairly common now. But back in early 2013, leading with organic social was not something other distribution studios considered.

“I’m not sure they get enough credit, but Spring Breakers really was the first social media-promoted film,” Gary Faber, co-founder of a marketing strategy firm specializing in film and theater, told Yahoo. “[A24] figured out a way to use social to talk directly to their customers — in their language.”

John Hodges, A24’s then-head of acquisitions, told the Los Angeles Times that, for most studios, digital campaigns were typically offshoots of main campaigns. But for them, “it was the spine of the campaign.”

A couple of years later, in the run-up to its 2015 release of The End of the Tour, A24 launched a pop-up magazine on Medium, publishing articles and essays about the life and work of author David Foster Wallace, the film’s subject. The niche publication likely reached literature enthusiasts in ways a Super Bowl commercial or highway billboard never could — and at a fraction of the cost.

Facebook and Medium were newer at that time, but the principle holds steady, even if the channels have changed. To stretch a dollar and make an outsized impact, experiment with the channels where your audience already lives but your competitors have yet to invest.

Collaborate With Other Brands

Ahead of its 2014 release of the small horror film Tusk, A24 partnered with a Los Angeles cannabis retailer to create two specially branded strains of marijuana for a cross-promotion.

Collaborations like this are among the less-expensive ways brands can reach new audiences, helping both sides access a different, but relevant, set of fans.

A24 marketing strategist Graham Retzik told the New York Times that Tusk was “right at the intersection of art and stoner culture,” so the brand crossover made sense.

It’s why, for example, Uber worked with Spotify to offer riders personalized playlists, why the hemp-infused seltzer company Recess made CBD dog treats in collaboration with pet food supplier Maxbone and why rapper Travis Scott partnered with McDonald’s on a meal named after him.

Collaborations allow one brand to drive its fans to the other, with both parties benefiting from the extra exposure.

More on MarketingHow Earned Media Can Help Startups Drum Up Attention

Delight Influencers and Press

To convince Spring Breakers producer Megan Ellison to sell A24 the film’s distribution rights, the team sent her a gun-shaped glass bong with the movie’s logo engraved on it. The gesture was meant to demonstrate that they were the ones who best understood the ethos of the outrageous guns-and-drugs movie. It worked.

A24 has a track record of sending swag to bloggers, journalists and fans, not just potential business partners. This includes things like a Lady Bird gift set full of nostalgic stickers, buttons and lighters, and a haunting greeting card teasing its horror film It Comes at Night.

These gestures created conversation and attention where none previously existed. That’s the essence of word-of-mouth marketing: Giving people reasons to talk about your brand, and making it easier for the conversation to take place.

Because odds are, when people receive gifts, they’ll share their excitement on social media. It’s free publicity — and effective publicity too, since it comes authentically from a regular person’s account, rather than a branded one.

Focus on What Breaks Through

Movies are typically tested with sample audiences before they are released so that studios can make any tweaks necessary before the theatrical rollout.

When he worked on marketing for the teen comedy Superbad, Schwartz said the McLovin character — a tertiary character in the film — was an even bigger hit with test audiences than the filmmakers anticipated. Since the character resonated with audiences, they decided to focus more of the movie’s marketing on McLovin and inject the character into the cultural conversation whenever possible.

The same logic may have been at work in A24’s decision to play up James Franco’s over-the-top character in Spring Breakers, or create a tongue-in-cheek Twitter profile for Black Phillip, the name of an evil billy goat featured in the 17th-century-set horror film The Witch, before even releasing the film’s trailer.

When marketers pay close attention to and solicit feedback from their early audiences, they can double down on what resonates — be it a meme-able movie character or an unassuming software feature.

There, patrons were draped in thick white bedsheets before being led into a room playing ethereal music and invited to have a “meaningful reflection.”

And to market its 2019 movie Uncut Gems, A24 opened another pop-up in New York City’s Diamond District.
Delight influencers and press.

Focus on what resonates with early adopters.

Leverage experiential marketing.

In addition to this morning’s SAG lead actor nominations for Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem in Being the Ricardos and supporting actor nom for Ben Affleck in George Clooney’s The Tender Bar, Amazon was also over the moon about the viewership results for both films, claiming that they were the highest debuts of any drama released on Prime Video ever, and the most watched of any Amazon Studios original movie produced in-house.

Being the Ricardos launched on Dec. 21 around the globe on Prime Video in over 240 countries and territories and was #1 in its opening week, while The Tender Bar dropped on Jan. 7 on Prime Video in the same markets and also ranked No. 1 in its opening week. Both movies per Amazon reached their anticipated 28-day goals on Prime Video way ahead of schedule. Both films joined the top ten Prime Video movie releases of all time, and the top drama movies of all-time on the streamer.

“We remain extremely curated,” said Head of Amazon Studios Jennifer Salke about the streamer’s balance of event titles like Coming 2 America and The Tomorrow War with Prime Video’s continued devotion to specialty auteur-driven movies.

“We’ve always believed if we build it, they will come,” says Salke about Prime customers’ appetite for prestige fare.

“We know we have global customers all around the world who love these kinds of films. You can see it in the results, it’s not debatable on any level. So that strategy is not under threat,” Salke tells Deadline today, “We’ll continue to be the place for the very best in storytelling with the best creative partners. No hard and fast rules about the budgets of those types of films.”

Soon after Salke’s arrival at Amazon Studios, and in the wake of Netflix’s award-winning success with Roma, the executive began to adapt to a distribution strategy whereby the streamer’s movies would receive a truncated limited theatrical release (over a week or two) followed by a big blast on the streamer around the globe. Salke told us at TCA back in February 2019, that such a direct-to-service strategy was imminent.

While the studio boss says that form of distribution remains “the main strategy”, Amazon isn’t “a company that makes hard and fast rules” when it comes to theatrical windowing.

“We’re a company that believes in experimentation and looking long-term,” she continues about Amazon’s approach to windows, “For us as an organization, we’d never say ‘never’ about that.”

Meaning, Amazon isn’t entirely closing the door on future movies that would have a longer theatrical window. The last movies that Amazon reported theatrical grosses on were their 2019 and 2020 limited releases of Honey Boy, Invisible Life and Les Miserables.

“Even movies that are planned only for streaming release, we go back and have long, thoughtful conversations around ‘Would it be in this film’s best interest to have a limited theatrical release, beyond a couple of weeks?’” explains Salke, “That windowing is constantly being discussed; our business around film and distribution is a hot topic like it is everywhere else. We’re just bringing a lot of thought, creativity and open-mindedness to the whole topic.”

She goes on to explain: “If we have a film that we think can drive massive ticket sales, that is also a big business driver. I think you’ll see experimentation in the space moving forward, but I think it’s safe to say we love and respect the theatrical experience. We want to bring people into theaters to be able to enjoy these films and then get them to global Prime audiences as soon as possible to capitalize on the global cultural moment and conversation and marketing spend on all this content.”

While Salke could not comment on Amazon’s pending acquisition of MGM, it’s no secret how the mini-major studio behind James Bond is betting on the return of adult audiences to theatrical movies, pandemic or not. To date during the Covid era, MGM has the highest grossing drama at the domestic box office, House of Gucci, at $50M-plus.

In addition to the US, Being the Ricardos over-indexed in Europe, Spain in particular, and in Australia. Outside the U.S., Tender Bar also performed exceptionally in the UK, Brazil and Italy. Separately, third party streaming metric corp Samba TV, which measures 3M U.S. Smart TV households, reported that the viewership for Being the Ricardos from Dec. 21-26 clocked 1.1M, over-performing with older viewers 55-64 (+14%), 65-74 (+23%) and 75-100 (+22%). Samba did not have any stats on the performance of The Tender Bar.

Written and directed by Brad Riddell and Sandy Sternshein, LATER DAYS stars real-life husband and wife David Walton (New Girl, Bad Moms, About a Boy) and Majandra Delfino (Roswell, Friends with Better Lives). Walton plays frustrated stay-at-home dad Mike Young who, nostalgic for his glory days, invites all of his high school friends (and enemies) to an 80s-themed surprise birthday party for his exhausted corporate wife Pam (played by Delfino). Featuring a killer 80s soundtrack, Later Days is a coming-of-middle-age, wild night comedy in the vein of Office Christmas Party and Game Night.

Brad Riddell and Sandy Sternshein produced the film for their banner, Wry Mash Media, along with producer Rob Roediger. Paul Hubbard and The Chicago Media Angels are Executive Producers.

As longtime fans of John Hughes’ films and their timeless themes of coming of age and understanding your place in the world, Sandy and Brad used those themes as inspiration.

“We had this idea – what if we could bring a bunch of adults back into the cliquey lunchroom and make audiences feel like they’re watching a Hughes film where everybody is 40 and are still as confused and unsure of themselves as they were in high school,” says Brad.

“And we also noticed a lack of independent comedies about the regular lives of everyday people. Nobody makes those movies anymore. So, we wanted to tap into some of that 80s nostalgia while giving people a laugh at the kind of characters they know from their own lives,” added Sandy.

A made-in-Quebec drama starring Telefilm Canada and the province’s film industry came to a happy ending Thursday, as Minister of Canadian Heritage and Multiculturalism Pablo Rodriguez gave Telefilm $7.5-million to fill a hole in its budget for francophone feature films. Mr. Rodriguez also named two new board members for the federal agency, which will commission an external audit of its funding programs.

The minister’s largesse stilled the turmoil that had wracked the Quebec film community and the federal agency since early April, when reports began circulating that Telefilm had already exhausted its 2019-20 budget for French-language feature films. Cinema professionals, alarmed by the increasing presence in Quebec of Netflix and its mainly English content, were suddenly faced with a funding drought till next year.

The most disturbing charge was that Telefilm had blown through some of its 2019-20 funds during 2018-19. On April 30, three long-serving senior managers were abruptly let go with no explanation, including Michel Pradier, director of project financing.

The industry rallied behind the exiting bureaucrats, who included director of business affairs and co-productions Roxane Girard and director of administration and corporate services Denis Pion. Eight professional organizations, representing every sector of the Quebec film industry, accused Telefilm executive director Christa Dickenson of “decapitating” the agency, scapegoating the departed managers, and putting Telefilm’s mission and raison d’être in danger. The organizations demanded to know why Ms. Dickenson, who took up her post last June, was mum about what had happened and why Telefilm’s board had not used its oversight power to protect the 2019-20 funding envelope.

In a phone interview on Friday, Ms. Dickenson said “there’s no doubt there was underfunding and overcommitment” in the French feature-film program for 2018-19. She declined to give more detail.

“The cycle of funding for film straddles several years,” she said. “What I’m looking to do is to make sure there’s predictability and agility [in Telefilm programs], so that this kind of situation doesn’t happen again.” She had no comment about the three departed directors.

Mr. Rodriguez first signalled his concern after an April meeting with an industry group. No one, however, took it for granted that Heritage would fill the gap. The 2016 federal budget included a gradual increase of $29.5-million in Telefilm funding, after two years of shrinking or flat parliamentary appropriations (The agency’s budget for 2018-19 is $111-million). Heritage also provided a one-time additional transfer of $2.5-million in 2017-18, specifically to support international exposure for Canadian cinema.

“We can’t simply stand by while good films are not produced,” Mr. Rodriguez said, as he disbursed his $7.5-million Thursday. There’s no doubt that the money was also intended to protect Quebec’s cinema ecosystem from the effects of a dry spigot at Telefilm. If film professionals start leaving, it will be harder to keep or increase Quebec film’s 13-per-cent share of the province’s film theatre audience.

On Thursday, Ms. Dickenson praised the minister’s appearance as the saviour in this narrative. She also acknowledged, in Friday’s phone interview, that her image had taken a beating in Quebec.

“The image has been a bit damaged, and I’m certainly working on that,” she said. “I had conversations yesterday with Quebec producers about re-establishing dialogue.” She said the producers responded favourably to her invitation to join a working group, to evaluate Telefilm’s funding programs.

One bit of news that could have spared Ms. Dickenson from ill will was somehow overlooked when it was first mentioned on April 18. Mr. Pradier told an industry conference that the agency would add $2.5-million in previously unallocated funds to French-language features. That increase didn’t appear in Quebec media until it was reiterated Thursday.

The appointment of new board members might seem to support the industry’s feeling that the existing board didn’t do all it should have, but Ms. Dickenson said there were two vacancies, which Heritage had been working for months to fill.

Robert Spickler, the new board chair, has extensive experience as an arts manager, although not in film. His arrival, and the learning curve that awaits him, may not calm the fears of those lamenting the departure of Telefilm veterans who knew the scene intimately. Karen Horcher, the other new board member, is an expert in financial risk management. The three departed managers have been replaced, in two cases on an interim basis, by long-standing Telefilm personnel.

As for Mr. Rodriguez, he still faces the task of finding a coherent and effective approach to Netflix and its ilk, which are still immune to federal sales tax. Quebec, meanwhile, stands to gain $62-million a year from its recent application of sales tax to online entertainment subscriptions, according to Revenue Canada. That money could help keep the provincial film industry alive to shoot another day.

IFC Films has nabbed North American rights to “John and the Hole,” an unorthodox coming-of-age story that had its premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

Directed by visual artist Pascual Sisto, the film follows 13-year-old John (Charlie Shotwell) who decides to drug his well-to-do parents (Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Ehle) and older sister (Taissa Farmiga). He then holds them captive within an unfinished bunker that he discovered while walking through the woods. Home alone, John experiences newfound freedom and independence.

IFC Films plans to release the film on August 6, 2021. The film marks Sisto’s feature debut. He was named one of Variety’s “10 Directors to Watch” in 2021. In a favorable review, Variety‘s Peter Debruge called Sisto a “remarkable new talent” and praised Shotwell’s performance.

“With any luck, the film will put both Shotwell and Sisto on the map,” Debruge wrote. “Through the subtlety of his performance, the actor cycles between identification and alienation, inviting genuine concern in certain circumstances. Meanwhile, Sisto’s the architect behind this whole crazy scenario, weaving a very dark thread of humor through an otherwise high-tension situation. We laugh in places when we don’t know how else to react, to defuse the pressure, because the vacuum inside John is so much scarier than the hole in his backyard.”

“John and the Hole” is adapted by screenwriter Nicolás Giacobone from his short story “El pozo”. Giacobone earned an Oscar for “Birdman,” as well as an Academy Award nomination for best foreign film for co-writing “Biutiful.” He has an upcoming film “Limbo” in production with “Birdman” and “Biutiful” director Alejandro Iñárritu that he also co-wrote. The sound design team includes Nicolas Becker, Jaime Baksht, Michelle Couttolenc, and Carlos Cortés who recently took home the Academy Award for sound on behalf of “Sound of Metal.”

The film is produced by Elika Portnoy and Alex Orlovsky of Mutressa Movies and Michael Bowes, and executive produced by 3311 alongside Phil Hoelting, Marco Vicini, and Fernando Tsai.

“Pascual has crafted a film that channels all the anger and uncertainty of adolescence into a meticulously constructed nail-biter that really gets under your skin,” Arianna Bocco, president of IFC Films, said. “We’re thrilled to be partnering with him for the release of this incredibly exciting debut.”

“It was very important to find a good home that will provide the right context for the film to find its audience,” Sisto said. “I’m extremely happy with IFC, it’s a company with an incredible history that really caters to each film and all their nuances.  I’m excited for them to guide us into its final release.”

The deal for the film was negotiated by IFC Films President Arianna Bocco with ICM Partners and UTA acting on behalf of the filmmakers. Sisto and Giacobone are also represented by both Untitled Entertainment and Ziffren Brittenham LLC.
