Taiko no Tatsujin: Rhythm Festival is the latest game in the 20-year-old musical rhythm series. Although primarily known to Japanese gamers, some titles have been localized to Nintendo Switch. Did I master the drums in my introduction to the series? No, but I have fun with Rhythm Festival.
I admit I felt a little overwhelmed at the start. Well, to the extent that one can feel overwhelmed by an E-rated music video game. I won’t say the navigation is a pain, but it took me a while to figure out the various menus and sub-menus. Learning the general and global layout, what happens in Oniko City, where the Rhythm Festival is taking place, was my first task.
As the central (and largest) icon, Taiko Mode is where I started. Here you and an optional friend can jump right into the drums. There are over 70 songs “available at launch,” and that wording makes me suspect freebies will be coming down the line. There are also paid songs through the Taiko Music Pass, over 500 songs available monthly for $3.99 or quarterly for $9.99. Individual song packs are also available for purchase, a selection limited to $4 or $5 a pop. Unfortunately, these are not compatible with the previous version of Switch, although there are other advantages for owners. A Deluxe Edition of the game gives you three months for just $5 more.
The music is as subjective as it gets, but Rhythm Festival has good diversity with plenty of catchy songs to appeal to varying tastes. Even songs you think wouldn’t work on drums can do so effectively. You can sort by different categories and genres (all color coded for easy navigation). Some choices are anime, classic, pop, and many Namco originals. FYI, more than half of the Vocaloid is made up of Hatsune Miku.
With four difficulties, anyone can jump in, and I’m grateful for that; you can move online if/when you feel confident. I recommend starting with songs you know to help you find your groove. But you will see your combos grow as you learn and click with all the different melodies. It’s rewarding to master individual songs and get into the rhythm.
Doddoko Town is all about online play (if you’re a Nintendo Switch Online subscriber). However, having to wade through 18 pages of explanations is another example of menus that feel too complicated for what should be fairly simple processes. After a long search for an opponent, I found one who quickly beat me. The game said they were “just a little better”, which I’m sure sounds polite but dishonest to them; I was thoroughly beaten. I tried this mode just to test it (I much prefer local play). But for those who plan to spend most of their time online, be sure to keep your Switch subscription up to date, have high-speed internet access, and plenty of practice.
Taiko Land has a pair of board games that admittedly aren’t all that different from the base game. Up to four friends can join you in co-op as part of a party, which is great fun. Do not worry; ai can complete the set if you run out of friends. How many concert fans will you have? The other has you competing with toys, which looks weird but fits the style. A mission-based mode with a bit of a puzzle angle, you can outplay your opponent by speeding up their notes, inserting wrong notes, and other such tricks. You can also play this mode online.
The store, where you can buy hats, costumes, and even mini-figures to go along with Don-Chan, the eccentric anthropomorphic leader of Drum World. Seeing Kirby hanging his back is damn cool! The in-game currency is an effective replay incentive, which is sure to entice finalists to purchase whatever is available.
Your room allows you to change and watch your many trophies. You’ll earn a lot just by trying out modes for the first time. In addition, very popular control settings are here. Want to play with traditional setups? You can, with three different button layout types available. Motion controls are also available, which I’m a fan of. I found them A-Okay for move sets, at least on the lower difficulties. Just make sure the straps are secure around your wrists.

Taiko no Tatsujin: Rhythm Festival presents a brilliant and lively world. With so many wacky animations, it’s almost as fun to watch as it is to play. Just make sure you don’t get distracted. There’s a real charm to the show, and the visual variety pairs well with the music.
Perhaps my only issue to note is with some specifics of the notation. I noticed that in competition against my wife, she beat me. Still, I had more “good” ratings, fewer “bad” ones, and higher combos, drum rolls, and percentages. Admittedly, I’m more about cooperation, but for competition, note that something is wrong.
While those more familiar with the series might have some gripes, Taiko no Tatsujin: Rhythm Festival was a great introduction for me. Don’t worry about being too good at these types of games; you’ll have a great time, especially if you have friends in the room for a party type setting. But even more solo players will have the main story and plenty of unlockables to keep them busy. Whether competitive or cooperative, it could be great fun for family reunions.

After having enchanted us with their first title, the Bordelais from Asobo are back with the second opus of their A Plague Tale series, this time named Requiem. Unfortunately, and unlike our test of the Innocence episode, also available in Cloud Gaming thanks to the solutions offered by Ubitus, this time we are far from satisfied with the experience, to the point of not even having desire to continue our game after three hours of slow eye agony. So when in addition the sale price is 60€, there is really something to shout about for this almost unplayable Cloud Version.
When anger is not enough
We had already mentioned it in our previous test of a cloud title, but what is Ubitus trying to do on our Nintendo Switch? To be sure that the problem did not come from our internet connection, we started by relaunching A Plague Tale: Innocence as well as Control in their Cloud Version. No launch issues or latency issues. Control still offers a performance mode, in 60 fps, as well as a graphics mode, Ray Tracing, but in 30 fps, and A Plague Tale: Innocence is still perfectly playable and beautiful.
However, it is very different with this new title offered by Ubitus. With a fiber connection, whether in docked mode with an RJ45 socket and a test at 80 Mbits/sec, or in nomadic wifi mode at 52 Mbits/sec, it is difficult to want to blame the connection for the disaster we are experiencing. we were entitled. That we hope to have an apology from Ubitus for the undermining work they are carrying out on the development of the cloud?
But before getting an answer to this last request, it should be remembered that the Switch is quite capable of outputting a video stream in 1080p at 60 fps, as Mario Kart 8 has proven for many years now. So not offering such quality docked for a game that, moreover, does not require any work from the processors of our Switches is unacceptable. Bayonetta 3 definitely marks the comeback of the Platinum Games witch. With this new adventure, Bayonetta proves once again that she is the queen of beat’em up by offering battles that are still as exhilarating and spectacular as ever, which are sublimated here thanks to many new weapons and the mechanics of summoning demons. which changes the way of fighting. In addition to being a superb beat’em up, the title does not forget to offer a certain variety, both in its more open levels and in its game phases, in particular by making us play other characters like Viola and Joan. And then, the adventure is all the more pleasant to go through as it benefits from a high frame rate in combat, an epic staging, but also a more serious scenario which delivers a grandiose outcome. . Obviously, this episode is not perfect for all that, with its sometimes messy confrontations, its graphics far from being impeccable or its wiser side than usual, but it remains a new memorable adventure nonetheless. clearly worth the long wait.

Apart from the graphic universe, where I was initially skeptical, it was on the tone. I was afraid to find Rabbids”too stupid”. Finally, their expression is rather well found. Variations between emotion and humor, but without falling into the tense or off-putting, make the game fun for adults and children. Finally, these Rabbids reveal a bit more depth.

Three great composers are at the origin of this project. Ça y est, Bayonetta, la sorcière préférée du jeu vidéo, est enfin de retour ! Huit ans après la sortie du second épisode et cinq ans après l’annonce du projet, Bayonetta 3 est enfin à portée de main pour marquer le retour en fanfare de l’héroïne phare de Platinum Games. Mais bon, alors que tant d’années séparent ce nouvel épisode des anciens, est-ce que l’attente en valait vraiment le coup ? Oh que oui !

Comme dit précédemment, Bayonetta 3 est un beat’em up, un genre de titre qui n’est pas réputé pour mettre l’histoire au centre de l’expérience de jeu. Pourtant, ce troisième volet des aventures de la sorcière de Platinum Games nous a surpris sur ce plan-là, avec une histoire plus sérieuse mais aussi plus touchante que jamais. Pour faire un bref résumé de l’intrigue, on retrouve notre sorcière bien-aimée en train de faire du shopping à New York jusqu’à ce que la ville se fasse attaquer par des homonculus qui déclenchent un tsunami.
Au même moment, une jeune femme du nom de Viola tombe du ciel et demande à voir Bayonetta qui est évidemment la seule à pouvoir régler la situation. Après un affrontement toujours aussi épique, Viola explique à Bayonetta et Jeanne, sa complice de toujours, qu’une entité appelée Singularity détruit les dimensions dans le multivers. Ainsi, Bayonetta et Viola vont partir à la recherche de rouages du chaos qui sont capables de venir à bout de cette menace, tandis que Jeanne va chercher le docteur Sigurd qui sait s’en servir. Bon, dit comme ça, c’est clair que le scénario paraît ultra-classique avec une recherche d’objets pour aller vaincre le grand méchant caricatural. Mais en réalité, avec son excuse de multivers, Bayonetta 3 nous fait voyager d’une dimension à l’autre avec des décors radicalement différents, ce qui donne vraiment le sentiment d’une aventure. Et puis, on retrouve comme d’habitude une mise en scène toujours aussi spectaculaire et virevoltante qui reste l’ADN de la saga, et ce, jusqu’au bout de son aventure.
Malgré toutes ces qualités, on a quand même pu noter que l’aventure était un peu plus sage que ce qu’on avait connu jusque-là, dans le sens moins déjanté. Pour une fois, on sent notre sorcière préférée moins en confiance, ce qui confère une certaine gravité aux événements, mais on retrouve aussi moins le côté parodique et insolent qui faisait tant le charme de la série. Cela se ressent également dans le changement de doubleuse de Bayonetta, car si vous avez suivi les dernières actualités du monde du jeu vidéo, oui ce n’est plus Hellena Taylor qui incarne la sorcière, mais bien Jennifer Hale. Et si cette dernière fait tout pour respecter le travail de sa prédécesseure, on sent quand même que la sorcière est moins insolente et plus sage qu’auparavant. The whole thing is to know that when there are no more and you think you have finished the game, there are still some. NieR Automata ends in about fifteen hours of play, but it’s far from the end. To take full advantage of it, you will have to go through the New Game + which has many surprises in store. Lots of surprises. And its soundtrack, composed by Keiichi Okabe, is simply masterful.
I will just tell you that it is not necessary to have made NieR Replicant to enjoy NieR Automata, even if, let’s be honest, you will not have certain little chills when discovering certain musical themes and certain characters, like Emil, Devola and Popola. So having done NieR Replicant is a plus, but it’s not essential.
In short, the real question is whether the little Nintendo Switch is able to hold up to honor the clashes planned by PlatinumGames.
Well very clearly, on this side, the Virtuos studio, regulars of this type of porting, managed to make a very correct copy. We’re running 720p in handheld mode and upscaling to 1080p on TV, with a 30 fps that never falters. So yes, graphically, the game is not a killer: the environments can seem quite empty, some textures are runny and we are entitled to a good dose of clipping and pop of elements at the last second. But in itself, nothing worse than the 2017 version. Very concretely, this version does not have to be ashamed compared to the other existing versions on the market.
On the other hand, where it fishes a little, it is on points specific to its support. Let me explain.
Being able to tell yourself that you can play NieR Automata anywhere, in portable mode, is a real pleasure. But in fact, Switch in hand, I found the situation to be a little less encouraging than I would have hoped.
Clearly, the Switch screen is not always suitable for certain types of clashes that lose readability. And knowing that the game is not always perfect in its management of the camera, on a reduced screen, the problem is accentuated. When you play on easy, it should be creamy, but on normal and especially on difficult, where each mistake can be paid for in cash, it’s much more delicate, given the nervousness of the clashes and the astronomical amount of things to avoid .

The catch is that you only have one hit.
I think it’s pretty cool when a game breaks the 4th wall. Especially when the characters speak to the player as if they know you’re really there. At first, Niko is unaware of your presence. He wakes up alone in a scary and strange house. Only when he finds a light bulb in the basement is he allowed to leave. The thing is, Niko doesn’t know where he is or how to get home.
As Niko wanders around a bit, he comes across a friendly robot NPC named Prophetbot, who notices the bright, glowing light bulb he’s carrying. He breaks some pretty interesting news and informs Niko that Niko is the Messiah and that he was brought to this world to restore the light. The NPC also tells Niko about you, the player. You are like a god to them. Niko is told that actions have consequences and that his decisions will affect the outcome of this world. You’re there to keep a watchful eye and help guide Niko on his journey. He will turn to you and ask you questions or advice. It made me feel closer to him, like we were really in the same boat.
Another cool feature is that OneShot is kind of like a game within a game. When the game starts, your Nintendo Switch will transform into a retro desktop computer. Your joysticks control the mouse, you can change your desktop wallpaper, view game files, change settings, and all sorts of things. Clicking on the OneShot icon will load the game. It will even open in a separate window that you can minimize and move around the screen. Click the X in the upper right corner to save and close your game. Pretty neat, in my opinion.
When it comes to gameplay and controls, including graphics, OneShot reminds me of Undertale. Which is by no means a bad thing. It’s great that we’re getting these really deep emotional games without needing a huge budget. I feel like it makes those specific games even more memorable because you get closer to the characters and familiar with the environments, not to mention an open story with more than one ending. A great recipe for a great experience. And that’s exactly what OneShot is.
You might also be surprised to know that you won’t participate in any combat during your OneShot game. This is a puzzle/adventure RPG. You’re going to use the old noggin for this one. Niko mainly solves riddles and puzzles around the world in order to reach a new area or unlock a door. It’s one of those games that sometimes seems very difficult, but the solution ends up being really obvious, and you’re like, “…..oh, DUH! “. Interacting with the various characters around the world will help guide Niko to the next task if you get stuck or lost. But most of the time, you’ll just be figuring out what you need to move forward.
The whole “one shot” aspect can also be compared to Undertale. There are several different endings in OneShot, but you are only allowed to complete the game once. The ending can be sad, depending on your choices. But one wonders what could have happened. Just like in real life.
