By definition, CNC stands for Computer Numerical Control. A computer numerical control (CNC) machine is a tool that can be programmed to do its job over and over again without human intervention. This means not only can automatic machines run unattended, but they can also produce very complex parts in large volumes.

What is CNC milling and what are its applications?

CNC milling is a manufacturing process in which material is cut away by a rotating cutting tool, like a drill bit. With CNC Milling, it’s possible to create complex and intricate parts that couldn’t be otherwise produced by the traditional method of casting or stamping.

Examples of applications for CNC milling

CNC milling is used everywhere, from small businesses to large corporations. In fact, CNC milling is one of the most widely used manufacturing processes in industry today. Some job shops can have hundreds or even thousands of machine tools specifically for CNC Milling purposes.

How does a CNC mill work? – the basics

A CNC mill uses a series of linear axes and rotary axes just like a 3D printer does. The difference between the two is that the cutter on a CNC mill doesn’t move in any direction, it’s always rotating around its axis. A cutting tool attached to this rotating shaft is moved closer and closer to the material, which is held stationary, and cuts away the material. This is called subtractive manufacturing because one layer of material is reduced to reveal the next.

The different types of CNC mills

You can categorize CNC mills into two types, based on the motion of the cutter relative to the workpiece.

The first type is called a horizontal machining center (HMC) and it has one axis for moving the tool vertically or horizontally across the material. This means that all three-dimensional features must be carved into the surface before the HMC can make any cuts.

The second type is called a vertical machining center (VMC) and it has an additional rotating axis, which means the tool can make a pass along a surface to remove material while also making a cut from the side. This makes VMCs more efficient because they don’t have to carve out three-dimensional features first, but they still have to do a finishing pass from the back of the material.

For milling, as for turning and other processes, the CNC machine has a spindle with a cutter held rigidly in place by bearings and often additionally supported by a chip auger or some other means so it can remove material more efficiently.

How to choose the right CNC mill for your needs

CNC milling machines are offered with a range of work envelopes.

For example, you’ll need to look at the size of the smallest workpiece your machine can hold in order to determine if it’s small enough for your needs. Other factors include ease of use, reliability, power and overall capabilities compared to other CNC machines.

How much does it cost?

CNC milling machines range from $1,000 to as much as $100,000, depending on what you need them for and how big they are. There can also be additional expenses, such as tooling and software.

What’s the bottom line? If you’re just getting into machining, a small manual milling machine, or a bench top milling machine, can be a good investment. If you’re looking to do large-scale projects, such as airplane wings and engine parts, you’ll need something larger and more expensive.

Tips on using and maintaining a CNC mill

For safety purposes, always wear goggles and ear protection when using a CNC milling machine. Keep your hands away from the cutting area, or use cut-off gloves if you need to adjust something on the spindle.

When lining up pieces for work, make sure that they are secure and at right angles to each other so there is no risk of them slipping while you cut. After cutting a piece, make sure to turn the milling machine off before removing it.

Keeping the machine in good condition will ensure that it functions properly. After every hour of use, clean the machine, oil all moving parts and make sure bolts are secure.

Conclusion

A CNC mill can change your life if you’re into boatbuilding or hobbyist woodworking, and they are invaluable tools for prototyping and design work in industrial settings. Used correctly, they can pay for themselves in a short time.

A key example is unconventional — such as high-temperature — superconductivity, which does not follow the conventional laws of superconductivity. Most superconducting materials exhibit their seemingly magical property of zero resistance at a few degrees Kelvin: temperatures that are simply impractical for most applications. Materials that exhibit so-called ‘high-temperature’ superconductivity, at temperatures achievable with liquid nitrogen cooling (or even at room temperature), are a tantalising prospect. Finding and synthesising new materials that exhibit unconventional superconductivity has become the condensed matter physicist’s Holy Grail — but getting there involves a deeper understanding ofexotic, topological electronic behaviour in materials.

An exotic type of electron transport behaviour that results in a spontaneous flow of charge in loops has long been debated as a precursor to high-temperature superconductivity and as a mechanism behind another mysterious phenomenon: the quantum anomalous Hall effect. This topological effect, the subject of F. Duncan M. Haldane’s 2016 Nobel Prize winning work, occurs in certain two-dimensional electronic materials and relates to the generation of a current even in the absence of an applied magnetic field. Understanding the quantum anomalous Hall effect is important not only for fundamental physics, but also for the potential applications in novel electronics and devices. Now, a PSI-led international collaboration has discovered strong evidence supporting this elusive electron transport behaviour.

Time-reversal symmetry-breaking charge ordering in the kagome superconductor KV3Sb5

The team, led by researchers from PSI’s Laboratory for Muon Spin Spectroscopy, discovered weak internal magnetic fields indicative of an exotic charge ordering in a correlated kagome superconductor. These magnetic fields break so-called time-reversal symmetry, a type of symmetry that means that the laws of physics are the same whether you look at a system going forward or backward in time.

A natural explanation of the occurrence of time-reversal symmetry-breaking fields is a novel type of charge order. The charge ordering can be understood as a periodic modulation of the electron density through the lattice and rearrangement of the atoms into a higher-order (superlattice) structure. The team focused their study on the kagome lattice, KV3Sb5, which superconducts below 2.5 Kelvin. Below a higher critical temperature of approximately 80 Kelvin, a giant quantum anomalous Hall effect is observed in the material, which was previously unexplained. The exotic charge ordering appears below this critical temperature of approximately 80 Kelvin, termed the ‘charge ordering temperature’.

The discovered time-reversal symmetry-breaking fields implies an exotic type of charge order where currents move around the unit cells of the kagome lattice, known as orbital currents. These produce magnetism dominated by the extended orbital motion of the electrons in a lattice of atoms.

“Experimental realization of this phenomenon is exceptionally challenging, as materials exhibiting orbital currents are rare and the characteristic signals [of orbital currents] are often too weak to be detected,” explains corresponding author, Zurab Guguchia, from the Lab of Muon Spin Spectroscopy at PSI, who led the team.

Although previous studies have shown the breaking of time-reversal symmetry below the superconducting temperature, this is the first example in which time-reversal symmetry is broken by charge order. This means that this putative exotic charge order classes as a new quantum phase of matter.

An extremely convincing piece of evidence

To search for the long disputed orbital currents, the physicists used highly sensitive muon spin rotation/relaxation spectroscopy (µSR) to detect the weak, tell-tale magnetic signals that they would generate. Muons implanted into the sample serve as a local and highly sensitive magnetic probe to the internal field of the material, enabling magnetic fields as small as 0.001 µBohr to be detected. In the presence of an internal magnetic field, the muon spin depolarises. The muons decay into energetic positrons, which are emitted along the direction of the muon spin, carrying with them information on the muon spin polarisation in the local environment.

The researchers observed how, as the temperature is decreased to below 80K, the charge ordering temperature, a systematic shift in the magnetic signal appeared. Using the world’s most advanced µSR facility at PSI, which enables application of fields up to 9.5 Tesla, the team could use an external high magnetic field to enhance the shift in the tiny internal magnetic fields and provide even stronger evidence that the magnetic field was due to internal orbital currents.

“We first performed the experiment with no external field,” explains Dr. Guguchia, “and when we saw the systematic shift appear below the charge ordering temperature, we felt very motivated to continue. But when we then applied the high field and could promote this electronic response, we were delighted. It’s a very, very convincing piece of evidence for something that has remained elusive for a long time.”

A deeper understanding of unconventional superconductivity and the quantum anomalous Hall effect

The research provides arguably the strongest evidence yet that long debated orbital currents actually exist in the kagome material KV3Sb5. Theory suggests that the quantum anomalous Hall effect originates from orbital currents. Therefore, orbital currents have been proposed in a number of unconventional superconductors that exhibit a strangely large quantum anomalous Hall effect; namely graphene, cuprates and kagome lattices, but actual evidence that they existed had been missing until now.

The discovery of time-reversal symmetry-breaking fields, which imply orbital currents — and the peculiar charge ordering that gives rise to them, opens doors to exotic avenues of physics and next-generation device research. Orbital currents are considered to play a fundamental role in the mechanism of various unconventional transport phenomena including high-temperature superconductivity, with applications from power transmission to MAGLEV trains. The concept of orbital currents also forms the basis of orbitronics — an area that exploits the orbital degree of freedom as an information carrier in solid-state devices.

For his first appearance at the Geffen Playhouse in more than a decade, Tony and Emmy winner Bryan Cranston is taking on yet another juicy role that allows him to blur the lines between virtuous and ruthless.

In Paul Grellong’s Power of Sail, Cranston plays Charles Nichols, a renowned Harvard history professor under fire for inviting a white supremacist to speak at his yearly symposium. Unfolding in a non-linear fashion, the chilling drama, which also features Amy Brenneman, Seth Numrich, and Brandon Scott, under the direction of Weyni Mengesha, exists in a world very much like ours, where personal gain is prioritized over integrity and the question of whether or not hate speech is free speech hangs like a cloud in the air.

Even for Cranston, who has made a career of playing difficult characters of ambiguous morality, Power of Sail has been a tough one to crack, mostly because the play, the pandemic, and the ongoing social unrest, has really made him reconsider his place in the social structure of the world. But if there’s anyone up for the challenge, it’s him.

This conversation has been condensed and edited for clarity.

Way back before Covid, you were supposed to be directing something at the Geffen, but that morphed into you acting in Power of Sail. Tell me about that trajectory.
I had gotten a call from Matt Shakman, the artistic director, who asked me to come back and do something for the 25th anniversary season, because I’m an alumnus. I did God of Hell, the Sam Shepard play, back in 2006 just after I had finished Malcom in the Middle. I’ve directed one-acts, but never a fully staged play, so I was hunting for something to direct that really caught my eye. I kind of wanted to do a comedy, because I’ve been doing a lot of dramas recently, but I didn’t want to do a slamming-door comedy. I wanted something that had some bite to it.

Then it dawned on me: what about The Foreigner by Larry Shue? I remember seeing that play because my friend Patricia Kalember was in the original production. It’s hilarious and we’re laughing at the hateful ideology of the KKK and white supremacy, and all that stuff. We started thinking about how I would want to do it, and then the pandemic hit, and then George Floyd’s murder, and, before that, Charlottesville.

Almost immediately, it was like, “I don’t think this works anymore.” I had to accept my white privilege and the blind spots in my life by saying, “Well, sure, it’s easy for me to laugh at the hateful ideology of white supremacists and the KKK because I am not affected by them.” I had the luxury of doing that, and that’s not acceptable. It’s not funny. The Foreigner became the proverbial dated material.

I told Matt that it wasn’t my time — if we’re truly looking at developing equality, I’m going to step aside for emerging BIPOC voices in the theater and really make that space. If they find something that they need an old white guy to be in, I can facilitate that to help the cause, but it’s not for me to jump to the head of the line. So we started looking for a couple of other things, and then my assistant said, “What about that play John Krasinski sent us?”

And that was Power of Sail.
John sent it to me when I was doing Network. When you’re doing a play, the last thing in the world you want is to think about another play. But he wrote to me and said, “I thought of you when I read this.” It’s very challenging, and another damaged character, which is exactly what I was expecting and is kind of in my wheelhouse. I guess I love characters that are not all good or all bad. I just relate to it.

Matt connected with Paul Grellong, the playwright, and pretty soon, it was a selection. We wanted a woman of color to direct us to really bring out all of the sides in it, and Weyni Mengesha is fabulous. She has such a beautiful comportment to her, in the sense that she never gets riled. She has a calm, nurturing sensibility, and she cuts to the chase. And she’s not afraid of the challenge.

I imagine it is a challenge — it’s a tough little puzzle of a play. I read it, and then had to reread it to see how all the parts fit together.
When it was done at the Warehouse Theatre in South Carolina, Mike Sablone, who is the artistic director and is one of our producing consultants, said that it was the first time in his experience that he ever had returning customers who came back just for the fact of figuring out, to see if they could track this. It’s like a runaway train for me. Once the play starts, for the next 80 minutes, I’m going crazy. And then I get a break to get a drink of water and calm down for a second.

And the story is so current it could have been on the news last night.
When I first read it, which was about this time in 2019, it was pre-pandemic, pre-BLM…Was this subject around? Yeah, of course. Was it seen? No. We hadn’t been enlightened. The process of selecting this play and bringing it to life really opened my eyes to my own blindness. I’ve lived 65 years under a certain belief system that I was taught or that I learned through my environment or education, whatever, and it belies an undercurrent of truth. That we don’t thoroughly go in and dissect the structures of how this country was created and the systemic racism that has always been there is astonishing to me.

What do you want people to feel and talk about when they see this play?
In this play, my character’s argument is pretty sound. And it does, nightly, get appreciation for the argument about free speech and open debate. “You have to support it even if you don’t agree with it.” How many times have we heard that? “We should all be willing to listen to an opinion that’s not my own.”

And then there’s hate speech and deniers of truth. We’re experiencing that now, as we see. “The election was stolen?” This is a lie and you’re perpetuating that lie. Should we give the person who spews that lie amplification to once again tell that lie? At one point in the play, my character is talking to his protege about the “paradox of tolerance.” When do we give someone a voice and when should we restrict it? I say, “The answer to hate speech is more speech.” And he says, “The answer to Nazis is clubs and bats.” And then I say, “But what’s the real answer?” And we don’t know.

We always want the finish of a play to be the continuation of a discussion, and hopefully our play creates that. This is intended to make people discuss, maybe even argue, on their way out, and hopefully they can’t shake it. I don’t want people to go “Let’s get a drink and think about it tomorrow.” This brings it to the surface. This is the way to open people’s eyes and make people see.

The melody came from “doodling around” on a tin whistle, he said. “I liked it and had to figure out how to create music out of it. Composers have different tools they can use – repetition, variation, texture change – to bring an idea to life.”

A grant from the Guernsey Charitable Foundation made it possible to commission the work, Nederhiser said. “It’s cool to be able to commission a work and part of our mission to support local composers. It’s really important to commission work and it needs to be a reflection of our larger community. When the audience can see themselves on stage, it allows them to feel more included. It encourages aspiration and inspiration.”

Washington attended a rehearsal and worked with musicians for about an hour. “Orchestras don’t usually get to interact with a composer, to ask questions – ‘are we playing how you meant?’ – and share fun facts about creating the creative process, which makes it so much more meaningful,” Nederhiser explained.

And about that first name: “Yes, my mom named me after the actor Denzel Washington. I find great joy in it. It’s actually an easy conversation starter,” Washington added, with a laugh.

The pure white skin does not tend to yellow like many other white varieties of eggplant. The improved taste and texture has universal appeal (whether fresh or cooked).

Lettuce “Bauer” — Oakleaf lettuce is a delicious and versatile edible that is super easy (and fast) to grow. Harvest at the baby leaf stage or grow into the rosette-shaped full-sized head.
