Amazon Studios announced today that Dave Franco will direct the upcoming Amazon Original film Somebody I Used to Know from a script he wrote alongside Alison Brie. Brie will also star in the Temple Hill Entertainment and Black Bear Pictures-produced romantic comedy alongside Jay Ellis and Kiersey Clemons. Somebody I Used to Know follows workaholic Ally (Brie) who, on a trip to her hometown, spends a night reminiscing with her ex-boyfriend Sean (Ellis), which makes her start to question everything about the choices she’s made and the person she’s become. And things only get more confusing when she meets Cassidy (Clemons), a younger woman who reminds her of the person she used to be.
The film reunites Franco and Brie with Black Bear following their box office success, The Rental. The horror film, which marked Franco’s directorial debut and starred Brie, released last summer to rave reviews, topping the weekend box office for two consecutive weeks.
“Alison and I love romantic comedies and were inspired by the classics from the 80’s and 90’s,” said Franco. “We couldn’t be more excited about working with Jay and Kiersey, who are both extremely natural performers, capable of bringing levity and drama in equal measure. Multifaceted, London-based film director and video artist Eva Lanska will unveil The Existential Choice, her choreographic new photograph and 3D video installation, at Palazzo Bragadin in Venice, Italy from April 19th to 24th on the opening of the Biennale Arte 2022. The 3D video installation will also be made available as an NFT.
In the multimedia installation, Lanska employs gesture and symbolism to explore the intense proximity between collaboration and competition. For a hypnotic minute she offers a sensitive portrayal of the tenderness and tension that can often be held woman to woman. The video is accompanied by a series of photographic stills that invite greater insight, using photography as a medium that enables the artist to explore the ideas she advocates for from new perspectives.
Lanska captures movement to convey symbolic meaning. By dramatizing the relationship between two ballerinas, she highlights the socio-ethical sacrifices that dancers continually face. As the epitome of femininity, the ballerinas represent womankind more broadly, with the video acting as a parable for the pressures on women to betray one another in their rise to the top.
“The betrayal one makes for your career will live in the heart forever,” says Lanska. Here Lanska emphasizes one particular aspect of society that she finds problematic and offers a critical insight into the way many culturally long-standing customs actually run contrary to core humanitarian values.

In this, the 10th anniversary year of sci-fi cult classic ATTACK THE BLOCK, STUDIOCANAL & Film4 confirm that Nira Park, Joe Cornish, John Boyega & James Wilson have reunited to develop and produce the highly anticipated second film. Cornish will write and direct with John Boyega returning to star as Moses. Details about the plot are currently being kept under wraps.
Joe Cornish comments “I’m thrilled we’re officially announcing our return to the world of ‘Attack The Block’ on the tenth anniversary of the film’s release. I can’t wait to work alongside John again, bringing audiences an even bigger slice of inner-city alien action.”
The 2011 film featured an ensemble of relatively new, then unknown, actors, including Boyega who has quickly become one of today’s most sought-after young actors. He has since gone on to star in several films and most recently earned a Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice Award for his performance in Steve McQueen’s anthology film series Small Axe for BBC/Amazon Prime. Additional cast in the original included Alex Esmail, Danielle Vitalis, Leeon Jones, Franz Drameh, and Simon Howard. It also starred Jodie Whittaker, Luke Treadaway, and Nick Frost.
John Boyega expands “It’s been a decade since Attack The Block was released and so much has changed since then. I’m excited to see this heightened story return to the streets of London. Moses has remained one of my favourite characters to play and bringing him back is a huge honour.”

The Queen’s former press secretary, Dickie Arbiter, took to Twitter to highlight the current situation concerning the Counsellors.
He tweeted: “The Regency Act 1937 established the office of Counsellor of State – the acts themselves being Acts of the United Kingdom Parliament.
“The Regency Act 1953 restored The Queen Mother’s eligibility as a Counsellor of State which she lost on the death of George VI.
“Prince Harry resigned as a working member of the Royal family in January 2020 since when he’s been living in the USA.

Richard Palmer, the Daily Express royal correspondent, replied to Mr Arbiter saying royal sources have argued bringing on a new Regency Act would be “a waste of Parliamentary time and isn’t needed because the Queen doesn’t travel abroad anymore.”
Many social media users agreed with the prospect of seeing Parliament finding time to discuss this issue and nominate new Counsellors.

By law, two or more Counsellors of State are appointed by Letters Patent to act in Her Majesty’s name on a temporary basis and on specific issues – including attending Privy Council meetings and signing routine documents, in the event the Queen can’t undertake her official duties due to illnesses or trip abroad.
While the Queen stopped undertaking foreign trips in 2015, she is currently battling a mild bout of Covid, as announced on Sunday by Buckingham Palace.

There are normally five Counsellors automatically appointed within the Royal Family, no matter whether they are working royals or not – the sovereign’s spouse and the next four people in the line of succession who are over the age of 21.
This means Prince Philip was a Counsellor of State until his death last April.
The remaining royals covering this role are Prince Charles, Prince William, Harry and Andrew.
Following the line of succession to appoint the next Counsellors rather than pick and choose who should hold this role would mean that, in the event Parliament removed the Dukes of York and Sussex from their roles of Counsellors and didn’t choose to appoint specific people as replacements, the Counsellor title would fall on Princess Beatrice, currently 10th-in-line, and her sister Princess Eugenie, 12th-in-line.
Both sisters aren’t working members of the Royal Family.

While the Queen stopped undertaking foreign trips in 2015, she is currently battling a mild bout of Covid, as announced on Sunday by Buckingham Palace.

There are normally five Counsellors automatically appointed within the Royal Family, no matter whether they are working royals or not – the sovereign’s spouse and the next four people in the line of succession who are over the age of 21.
This means Prince Philip was a Counsellor of State until his death last April.
The remaining royals covering this role are Prince Charles, Prince William, Harry and Andrew.
Following the line of succession to appoint the next Counsellors rather than pick and choose who should hold this role would mean that, in the event Parliament removed the Dukes of York and Sussex from their roles of Counsellors and didn’t choose to appoint specific people as replacements, the Counsellor title would fall on Princess Beatrice, currently 10th-in-line, and her sister Princess Eugenie, 12th-in-line.
Both sisters aren’t working members of the Royal Family.

Days after it received news that it would lose its regular funding from Creative Scotland, Glasgow’s storied artist-run space Transmission today issued a statement condemning the decision. The statement begins, “This withdrawal of support severely compromises the future of the gallery and comes at a devastating time given the recent demographics and aspirations of the space.”
“Transmission interprets this decision as discriminatory, conscious or otherwise, and indicative of a wider but pressing issue of institutional bias,” the statement adds later. “We understand our situation in a wider context of simultaneous cuts to disability-focused theatre and children’s theatre projects this year, following historic dismantling of grassroots and minority-led arts organisations across the UK.”
According to a-n News, which first reported the cuts, Creative Scotland, a public body that disperses funds to arts organizations throughout the country, allocated £210,000 (or about $299,700) for the 2015–18 operations of Transmission, which opened in 1983 and which has long been a cornerstone of Glasgow’s art scene.
Many involved in the arts, in both Glasgow and further afield, have criticized the dropping of funding for Transmission, which is among nearly two dozen arts groups in the country. Paul Thomson, of the Glasgow band Franz Ferdinand, called it “a dreadful decision,” as a-n News notes, and Matthew Higgs, who grew up in England and now runs the White Columns alternative space in New York, said that the decision “is both baffling and depressing” and described Transmission as “arguably the most important artist-run space in the UK” in a post on Instagram.

Like Thor: Love and Thunder, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Captain Marvel 2 (The Marvels), this movie will have connections to the M. Marvel and Secret Wars series, as Kamala Khan and the Skrulls will be very important to the plot. . Even the sequels to The Eternals and Shang-Chi will face extra-planetary threats and could stray quite far from Earth.
The New Avengers. Without Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) or Scarlett Johansson (Natasha Romanoff), it will be Anthony Mackie who becomes the new Captain America and leads a different group of Avengers alongside his friend Bucky Barnes ( Sebastian Stan). In the first series where we will see this, it will be Moon Knight, but there will be other important installments such as Blade and we must also see how the character of Dane Whitman / Kit Harington’s Black Knight evolves.

Four projects have been selected during the first 2022 session of the CNC’s second advance on receipts committee (for second and third feature films).
Stealing focus among them is Le Règne animal which will be the second feature film offered up by Thomas Cailley, who was revealed at the 2014 Directors’ Fortnight via his multi-award-winning work Love At First Fight[+see also: film review trailer interview: Thomas Cailley film profile] (notably scooping the Louis Delluc Award and the Best First Film Lumière, as well as the 2015 Best Actress and Best New Hope Césars).

Starring in the cast of his latest opus – on which filming is due to begin in May – we find Adèle Exarchopoulos (hitting cinemas on 2 March in Zero Fucks Given[+see also: film review trailer interview: Emmanuel Marre and Julie Le… film profile] and very soon again in Fumerfait tousser, Les cinq diables and Passages), Romain Duris (recently enjoyed in Eiffel[+see also: film review trailer film profile] and soon to hit cinemas in Final Cut[+see also: interview: Michel Hazanavicius film profile] as well as in The Three Musketeers two-parter) and Paul Kircher (who has just finished shooting Le Lycéen by Christophe Honoré – read our news). Written by Thomas Cailley and Pauline Munier, the story takes place two years after humans first start showing signs of mutating into animals. Society is adapting to, taking charge of and trying to treat these “creatures” in specialised facilities. But one such convoy gets caught up in an accident and the Creatures disappear into the countryside… Production is steered by Pierre Guyard on behalf of Nord-Ouest Films, with StudioCanal distributing the film in France and selling the film worldwide.
An advance on receipts has likewise been awarded to Pendant ce temps sur Terre, the second feature film by Jérémy Clapin who nabbed an Oscar nomination in 2020 for Best Animated Film thanks to I Lost My Body[+see also: film review trailer interview: Jérémy Clapin film profile] (as well as winning Cannes’ Critics’ Week’s Grand Prize in 2019 and walking away with various Césars, the European Film Award’s animation trophy and Annecy’s Crystal for Best Film, to name just a few). Production is entrusted to One World Films.
The CNC will also be throwing its weight behind Temps Mort by Jonas d’Adesky, co-produced by French firm Tact Production, Belgium’s Neon Rouge and Rwanda’s Karekezi Film Production. This second feature by the filmmaker who was revealed in Toronto 2012 by way of Twa Timoun[+see also: film review trailer film profile] (selected for the 2013 Berlinale’s Generation section) will revolve around a Belgian-Rwandan professional basketball player living in Brussels who discovers she’s pregnant. She subsequently decides to travel to Rwanda to find her unborn child’s father. Once there, her family’s past catches up with her, but she realises she needs to face up to it if she wants to embrace her future…
Last but not least, a feature-length documentary project is likewise one of the lucky few to receive CNC support: Bonne nuit Boganda by Edie Laconi (notably well-received in the Cinéma du Réel Festival’s French competition in 2019 via Here, I Won’t Die[+see also: trailer film profile]) alongside anthropologist AndreaCeriana Mayneri. Produced by Look at Sciences, the film will transport us to Bangui, in Central Africa, and to the National Barthélémy Boganda Museum, a repository of memories ravaged by recent conflicts and whose employees have carried on working despite being closed to the public. The film will see them discuss part of the history of this country at war, as well as the current state of its exhausted yet obstinately lively inhabitants…
